This DVD tells the story of this amazing success story from the very beginning on the X Factor to their UK success and more recent global domination. They have been quoted as already eclipsing Adele in being the biggest British artist to conquer the US. The programme also includes comprehensive footage and interview material of the boy's picking up the first time award for 'Global Success' at the Brits music awards. In addition to covering the 'boy's' story of their involvement with Comic Relief the programme also gives a fascinating insight into each of the boys as individuals and who they are and what part they play in One Direction.   This edition of the Naxos Musical Journey series takes us to the towns and countryside of Schubert's Austria set to the soundtrack of his Trout Quintet, scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. We begin in the spa town of Baden, renowned for its surrounding vineyards. The crisp picture with colours well defined, of houses with lime green walls, inns painted pink, cobbled streets, no litter and few cars makes it look like a desirable resort. The camera pulls back as the tempo of the music picks up to reveal the vineyards (poppies at the reprise) under leaden skies. The tempo slackens for the second movement set on the Salt Chamber Estate in Spring: buttercups, cow parsley and narcissi flower in the Alpine meadows criss-crossed by streams. The "Scherzo" brings us to the resort of Steyr, where Schubert conceived the Trout on a walking holiday. The sun, now ablaze, shines brightly on pub signs a-plenty, guilds and craft shops. The fourth movement, "Theme and Variations", introduces the tune of Schubert's song, Die Forelle with an accompanying glimpse of a speckled trout in water so clear it could be drunk. The persistent rhythm of the finale accompanies a puffer train on the Steyr Valley Railway as it runs through woods and pastures. Then, as a coda to the journey, there's a one-movement Notturno accompanying pictures taken at twilight. On the DVD: Schubert: The Trout Quintet plays without flagging of the separate movements, which are given separately under the "Travel Notes" section. Other extras include a handy biography of the composer and the origins of quintet. The soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital and DTS surround. The music is played with much affection by the Ensemble Villa Musica. --Adrian Edwards

  oktor Faust remained a fragment at the time of the composer?s death. Busoni died in 1924, unable to complete what he himself described as his 'state masterpiece' - an opera to which he had a deep personal attachment. The missing scenes from the score - the appearance of Helen and Faust?s closing monologue - were completed by his pupil, Philipp Jarnach, whom Busoni had become acquainted with during his period in exile in Z?rich. In this form the opera was given its fi rst performance in Dresden in 1925. Then in the 1980s the conductor Anthony Beaumont came across previously undiscovered sketches by Busoni and produced a new version of Doktor Faust, which was premiered in Bologna in 1985. The current recording uses the Jarnach score.

  Numerous compilations of The Last Night of the Proms have been available in the past. Yet it makes sense to see and hear the event whole, and the 2000 Last Night was among the best of recent years. The range of music is excellent: Bach bizarrely orchestrated by Elgar, Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto given with classical poise by Hilary Hahn, and Jane Eaglen thrilling in the closing scene from Richard Strauss' opera Salome. In the second half, a scintillating and newly discovered jazz suite by Shostakovich, Percy Grainger's affectionate Tribute to Stephen Foster, and Delius' heartfelt Walk to the Paradise Garden. That it all works so well is a tribute to Sir Andrew Davis, who conducts with conviction and is clearly enjoying himself in the standard items by Elgar, Wood, Arne and Parry. As his last concert at the helm of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, it's fitting that he received a special presentation--following on from his typically enthusiastic Last Night speech.On the DVD: Presentation is excellent, with profiles of the main works and interviews with the artists performing them. Picture quality reproduces the colourful array of flags and festivities with admirable definition and naturalness. Sound quality is good, though recorded levels vary between music and interviews, and may need some volume adjustment during playback. There are 23 access points, and an introduction to the Last Night that sets the scene without pre-empting the occasion. Whether or not you've attended the event in person, you won't get a better sense of the fun, frivolity, and also the musical quality of the Last Night than here. --Richard Whitehouse
