Numerous compilations of The Last Night of the Proms have been available in the past. Yet it makes sense to see and hear the event whole, and the 2000 Last Night was among the best of recent years. The range of music is excellent: Bach bizarrely orchestrated by Elgar, Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto given with classical poise by Hilary Hahn, and Jane Eaglen thrilling in the closing scene from Richard Strauss' opera Salome. In the second half, a scintillating and newly discovered jazz suite by Shostakovich, Percy Grainger's affectionate Tribute to Stephen Foster, and Delius' heartfelt Walk to the Paradise Garden. That it all works so well is a tribute to Sir Andrew Davis, who conducts with conviction and is clearly enjoying himself in the standard items by Elgar, Wood, Arne and Parry. As his last concert at the helm of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, it's fitting that he received a special presentation--following on from his typically enthusiastic Last Night speech. On the DVD: Presentation is excellent, with profiles of the main works and interviews with the artists performing them. Picture quality reproduces the colourful array of flags and festivities with admirable definition and naturalness. Sound quality is good, though recorded levels vary between music and interviews, and may need some volume adjustment during playback. There are 23 access points, and an introduction to the Last Night that sets the scene without pre-empting the occasion. Whether or not you've attended the event in person, you won't get a better sense of the fun, frivolity, and also the musical quality of the Last Night than here. --Richard Whitehouse

The opera Andrea Chenier composed by Umberto Giordano.
Jackie Leven began his career in the band Doll By Doll and he is active as a solo artist since 1994. His melancholy biographical songs and his ironic humor which he presents in concert with terrific stories have brought him a steadily growing fan community. The Rockpalast concert was recorded in 2004 in the Harmonie in Bonn and contains not only the highlights of his album Shining Brother Shining Sister but also the first Jackie Leven hit Call Mother A Lonely Field Jackie Leven's comment to the concert: This was my first visit to Bonn and I was with my two favorite musicians friends and companions - Michael Cosgrave and Kevin Foster. Over the years I've come to love Bonn - I like all the crazy people drinking in the square as I walk from my hotel to The Rhine. I always go down to The Rhine to have a long peaceful think about things. It's a healing river and the long slow bend has mystery. Once walking from my hotel I saw a dead cat by the side of the path - when I came back one of the crazy alcoholic women was holding it and crying. I never take photographs - there are enough photos in the world already but this woman and the cat would have been a great portrait of sadness. I love Harmonie - it's real professional the sound is good everybody is very friendly the food is good and the backstage room is a room you feel good to be in. You cannot say these things about everywhere we play! This was a good concert - we were playing well I was singing well and although I have no personal memory of the performance (!) I can see that I was happy to be there and that the audience was happy too. We all must live for the good times - the bad times are never far away... Tracklisting: 1. A little voice in space 2. A mere three weeks after his much-acclaimed return to operatic and concert performance at the Salzburg Festival in August 1989, Jose Carreras appeared in another important musical event - a joint concert with his Spanish compatriot, singer Montserrat Caballe, held in Moscow's famous Bolshoi Theatre. The concert opens with a medley of baroque and belcanto gems from the 17th and 18th centuries, including a rendition by Jose Carreras of Arie Antiche by Alessandro Scarlatti.Italian and Spanish songs form a central element in the programme for this concert, including three Canzoni by Frances Paolo Tosti and one by Salvatore Cardillo, favourites from Carreras' concert repertoire. These popular Italian songs are matched by several Spanish Canciones Popolares, sung by Montserrat Caballe.Last but not least, opera is of course represented - even though it is a genre that is not central to this particular programme - by 'Brindisi', Violetta and Alfred's champagne-fuelled drinking song from Act I of Verdi's La Traviata, and Lauretta's enchanting aria from Puccini's one-act opera Gianni Schicchi.
