  First screened on ITV's South Bank Show in 1981, At the Haunted End of the Day remains the only full-length documentary on Sir William Walton, and is probably the most perceptive of Tony Palmer's composer studies from the 1980s. The first half of Walton's life is the stuff of novels: his unremarkable childhood in Oldham; his years as a chorister at Oxford University; his induction into "high society" by the Sitwell family; above all, the series of major works written during the 1920s and early 30s. The second half--when Walton relocated to Ischia and, surrounded by the tropical garden his wife Susana created, continued to compose impressive but often overlooked works--allows for some stunning footage of the Italian coastline. Musical contributions are plentiful, notably the young Simon Rattle directing Belshazzar's Feast and the First Symphony, and there are revealing interviews with Sacheverell Sitwell and Laurence Olivier. Interspersed throughout is film of the composer at work and in transit: laconic, self-deprecating, yet resolutely aware of his own worth. On the DVD: At the Haunted End of the Day arrives on disc in a standard TV 4:3 video aspect that reproduces well, though picture quality varies according to location. The soundtrack has the required immediacy. There are no subtitles, nor any extras: a "20 years on" postscript would have been welcome, though Palmer does provide some candid observations on the making of music documentaries in the accompanying booklet.--Richard Whitehouse

The Opera tells of Emperor Qin's quest for a national anthem for his new country and his ill-fated decision to force a rebellious but talented young composer to write it. Pl''cido Domingo as Emperor Qin leads an all-star ensemble in this classic story ideally suited to the opera stage. The First Emperor combines the expressive power of traditional ancient Chinese singing with the long musical lines of Italian Opera. This juxtaposition of musical cultures illustrates Tan Dun's musical style and influences perfectly. In his music not only East and West but ancient and modern coexist. One of just six composers to conduct their own works at the Met Tan Dun lead all the performances of the first run of the opera. Revered Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero Raise the Red Lantern) directs and was instrumental in the opera's creation having worked closely with Tan Dun while he composed the music.

Freed from his fear the boy watches the Pas de Deux from The Nutcracker directed by Marius his master and danced by the Prince and Princess. ''I remember! Christmas.. .. B''jart''s magical staging transforms the piece into an enchanting and enchanted autobiography and a loving homage to the choreographer''s mother and to his creative hero Marius Petipa. The first part of the performance is punctuated by B''jart on a huge video screen telling something of his childhood. Summing up his approach to creating this ballet B''jart remarked ''You live a life and you dream a life. When you come to write your own life you tell a lie to build the truth.'' Using Tchaikovsky's score in its entirety augmented with popular waltz and accordion music performed on-stage by the legendary Yvette Homer B''jart takes the original St Petersburg story as a springboard from which to evoke the memories emotions and feelings of his own life''s journey: from a Marseille childhood dominated by the memory of his mother to the passionate commitment to dance inspired by the father of classical ballet Petipa. Three performances of B''jart''s Nutcracker were recorded live fiom the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris for the purposes of this television presentation. The showman of modem dance Maurice B''jart''s work has been provocative influential and popular in equal measure. His choreography has always been physically thrilling setting up an immediate emotional combustion between audience and performer and he attracted huge new audiences for dance with the Ballet of the Twentieth Century productions he mounted in sports stadia public squares and circus tents. Since founding the B''jart Ballet Lausanne in 1987 he has been working on a more intimate scale but his style has remained just as electric vivid and direct in its appeal as ever.
