A winning combination for this recording is provided by the majestic background of the Bavarian Alps the tiny pilgrimage church of St. Servatius and the highly skilled Swiss cellist with Tawianese roots Wen-Sinn Yang. This is the centre stage for Bach's gorgeous Six Suites for Solo Violoncello composed in 1720.Written during Bach's time in Kothen the Suites are one of the most important series for this instrument and a big challenge for every cellist providing a well-balanced combination of sacral and secular music.Wen-Sinn Yang's play can be characterized as technically at the highest level with a lovely full sound and impeccable intonation. He penetrates completely the philosophical dimensions of the music he plays. Therefore it is possible for him to interpret the Suites in his very unique and accomplished way.

Plácido Domingo is no stranger to stadium events, though in the old days it was as a singer with his pals, Pavarotti and Carreras. In Spanish Night with baton in hand he has an appealingly avuncular manner, and he couldn't hope for a better class of orchestra than the Berlin Philharmonic, here playing in their annual open-air concert given at the city's Waldbühne. It's a real crowd-pleaser of a programme (and the audience's enthusiasm is immediately apparent and increasingly boisterous as the evening wears on). None of the works stretches the concentration unreasonably, and the views of Spain come not only from home-grown composers (Sarasate, Torroba, Serrano and Vives) but also as viewed through other eyes: Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnole, Chabrier's España and Johann Strauss II's Spanish March. A pair of soloists increase the sequin quotient of the evening: the consummately poised violinist Sarah Chang (who has been round for so long it's difficult to believe she's still only 20) and the full-voiced soprano Ana María Martínez, winner of the Plácido Domingo Vocal Competition in Barcelona. Given the visual limitations of such events, the camerawork is imaginative without being distracting, and the sound, if a little boxy, is perfectly acceptable. Above all there's a great sense of fun to the occasion, and in the final number, Lincke's Berliner Lufte, Domingo is unable to resist seizing the microphone and leading the singing. On the DVD Sound options are either Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo and the picture is formatted for 16:9 TVs. A variety of goodies have been added to the concert itself, including interviews with Domingo and Sarah Chang, footage of flamenco dancing in Berlin (which is vaguely relevant) and a behind-the-scenes documentary.--Harriet Smith
This DVD features the amazing Bolshoi interpretation of Theophile Gautier's piece created in 1841 at the Opera de Paris: Giselle. One of the great moments of Dance history that saw the main themes of Romanticism expressed. A love pastoral care that ends tragically a fantastic world of unearthly creatures and redemption thanks to the power of love. Giselle is the dream of a poet who gets deliberately lost in a dream world... A young countryside girl seduced by a Lord reaches the height of tragedy before falling into a supernatural epilogue. This ballet is a msterpiece of romantic ballets in which movement traduces the soul's language. In order to write Giselle Theophile Gautier required the help of Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. The choregraphy was insured by Jean Coralli: the first ballet director of the Opera de Paris. Jules Perrot who was in love with the main interpret contributed to the project more than he was expected to. This reunion of talents made this romantic ballet masterpiece exist. Movement became the soul's language.

Made in Golden Jubilee year to commemorate the close association between the 600 year-old choir of King's College, Cambridge and the British royal family, Anthems from King's is a pure, majestic demonstration of the qualities of this most distinctive of choirs. The programme eschews the choir's traditional role in the country's Christmas celebrations for a robust selection of 19th and 20th century anthems by stalwart British and Irish composers including Davies, Balfour Gardiner and Williams. Under the direction of Stephen Cleobury their voices soar, offering inspiration and balm in equal measure, marvellously served by the unique acoustics of King's College chapel. The standard throughout is sublime but Harris' Bring us, O Lord God and Balfour Gardiner's setting for Compline, Evening Hymn, sound exceptional. On the DVD: Anthems from King's on disc has the option to choose between DTS surround sound (best for the authentic King's College sound) or LPCM stereo. Either way, the sound quality is crystal clear. The video quality (16:9 anamorphic) is standard for television but given the ambience, things occasionally look a little dark. The extras include a multi-angle view of Daniel Hyde playing Stanford Postlude in D minor in which the organist's technique is shown off to great effect. Most touching, though, is the 30-minute BBC documentary which complements the music, giving some insight into the daily lives of the young choristers who give the choir its unique, bell-like tones.--Piers Ford
