Tropicália or Tropicalism is one of Brazil’s most significant cultural movements. Born in the late 1960s by a collective of like-minded souls it used music and visual arts as a voice to confront the cultural and political establishment. And now the scene and its key players are explored in Marcelo Machado’s fascinating new film Tropicália. This vibrant feature documentary explores this iconic and era-changing time in Brazil’s history with material lovingly gleaned from the archives stunning images and the testimony of the group’s protagonists including Caetano Veloso Gilberto Gil Tom Zé Arnaldo and Sérgio Dias from the band Os Mutantes whose controversial thoughts music and behaviour resulted in prison and exile for its leaders. Then of course there is the music the “Tropicalistas” created pop songs mixing traditional Brazilian folk and the north hemisphere’s rock which created a sound never heard before and which has since inspired and influenced many high profile musicians including David Byrne Damon Albarn and Beck. Director Marcelo Machado grew up listening to the music and was inspired to document this influential important scene in Tropicália which comes to UK cinemas on 5 July 2013 followed by a DVD release on 7 July 2013 from Mr Bongo Films. Tropicália tells the story of the cultural movement with the same name that was born in the late 1960s in Brazil. Headed by the musicians Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil the Tropicalist movement made a big impact in the popular music scene and had a huge intense presence in Brazilian television press and radio.
Selina Scott presents these documentaries which take a look at a selection of Britain's stately homes. Scott visits Burghley House, a 16th-century mansion built by Queen Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer, Sir William Cecil, which today holds many treasures that have accumulated over the years, such as Oriental ceramics and Italian masterpieces from the 1600s. Next is Chatsworth House, which was originally built by Bess of Hardwick, is currently occupied by Peregrine Cavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire, and has been lived in by his family since 1549. Then she visits Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and home to his ancestors for generations after being funded by an Act of Parliament for John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough, to show the nation's gratitude for his victory in the Battle of Blenheim. Scott then looks at Holkham Hall which was designed by architect William Kent for Thomas Coke, First Earl of Leicester. The Palladian style mansion houses Coke's extensive collection of Italian artwork and literature and has remained within his family to the present day. Finally, Scott finishes up at Boughton House, a mansion currently owned by Richard Scott, Tenth Duke of Buccleuch, and which holds a collection of treasures including paintings by van Dyck and cabinets by André-Charles Boulle.

An innovative 'magic realist' documentary set in Iraq. Filmmaker Mark Cousins, who was brought up in a Northern Irish war zone, travels to Goptapa, a Kurdish-Iraqi village of just 700 people on a tributary of the Tigris river, and tries to make a dream film about a place that is normally only portrayed in current affairs programmes. From Kidderminster we follow the Severn Valley line to Bewdley and on through the Wyre Forest into Wales. We then view the long-closed lines from Brecon to Neath and Merthyr and end with the last train on the former GWR line to Blaenau. This DVD will revive memories for those who knew these lines and for those who did not have the chance to explore them before they closed it will help to explain why these long closed railways are still remembered with such affection by those who travelled on them in their heyday.
