Admittedly it does take a while to get used to Viggo not having long hair and wielding a large sword, but it is a really great display from him in particular in A History of Violence. It is a movie with a lot of twists and turns and after 30 minutes of watching I would be genuinely surprised if you knew where the plot was headed. Throw some highly graphical violence, and some strange sex scenes in and that pretty much sums this movie up! It is an entertaining movie, and is worth a watch if you like a good story with large helpings of action.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & The Wardrobe is a fun and heart warming movie for all the family. There are solid displays from all of the actors and actresses, especially young Georgie Henley who played Lucy Pevensie. Most importantly though, the movie stays true to the classic CS Lewis novel and provides laughter, joy and even a few tears on the extraordinary journey that the children go on! The surroundings in Narnia are amazing and the computer generated animals are extremely realistic, with some great voice actors including Liam Neeson, Dawn French and Ray Winstone. This is a thouroughly recommendable watch, as anyone can enjoy this adventure!
The thing about Ridely Scott; is that he insists on making three bad films for every one masterpiece, younger sibling Tony on the other hand, is consistently good, albeit having never ascended to the giddy heights of cinematic greatness. But if you, like me, live in a world where "Top Gun", "True Romance" and "Days of Thunder" enjoy a play-rate far exceeding that of accepted classics like 'Blade Runner", "Alien" or "Gladiator", then you"ll probably love Tony"s latest.
Kiera Knightley, who began this movie a day after wrapping "Pride & Prejudice", swaps Lizzie Bennett"s bodice and ball-gown for Domino Harvey"s M-16 and Uzi in Scott"s unique take on the short, but adventurous, life of model-turned-bounty hunter; Domino Harvey. There"s plenty of action, most of it quite raw in spite of the many filters and jump cuts, which intentionally work to parody Scott"s trademark MTV style (or the Bruckheimer method as its now known). Chris Walken fans will love his cameo as a smarmy TV exec, whilst Mickey Rourke, Rizwan Abasi and Edgar Ramirez also play their parts well. The only thing that annoyed me was Kiera"s plumy RP accent, which seems better suited to the forests of Narnia than the mean streets of L.A. "Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly wrote the script and Tony Scott ensures that he throws everything but the kitchen sink at us, in an all out, balls-to-the-wall visual onslaught that"s every bit as exciting, albeit not as narratively accomplished, as "Man On Fire". Trashily enjoyable.
YAAAAAWWWNNNNNN. What a waste of 1hr and 40 mins of my life.
Writer/director M Night Shyamalan delivers a film with an original idea and interesting twist in the tale. But that's the problem.
All this comes at the very end of the film.
Before that you've got some cliched gubbins about monsters making life misery for residents of an 18th century village.
An all-star cast, featuring the likes of Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody and Joaquin Phoenix, try their best but they struggle with the plodding dialogue and dull plot.
Shyamalan is so desperate to prove how clever he is, and keep his twist a secret, that nothing interesting happens until the final 20 mins. But by then it's too late and the film is beyond salvation. I would urge you to avoid this and catch an old episode of Tales of the Unexpected instead.
The Wire is probably the best TV series you've never heard of. While its fellow HBO shows like Deadwood and the Sopranos have found huge audiences, and awards, this cop show set in Baltimore's underworld has been criminally ignored. But I would urge you to pick up this largely undiscovered gem now.
The plot, presented as a visual novel where every conversation and scene of every episode is critical to understanding what's going on, centres around a complex drug investigation. Over the course of the 12 episodes you get to a meet a host of gritty, realistic characters, both cops and crooks. None of them are typical of the crime genre, while the riveting plot keeps you guessing to the very end, something else which is pretty unique in this well-worn genre. If you enjoy quality, thought-provoking drama then I can't recommend The Wire enough.
Futher exploits from the team at Glenbogle and nice to see Molly and Golly eventually getting it together at long last. The Finale of this wonderful series sees the characters eventually getting it right and we are left eith the feeling that Glenbogle will continue for years to come.
This dvd boxset only gets a 3 rating from me. Not because of the film, the film gets a 4... its brilliant, but because of the dvd's. The actual film is split onto two different disc's so you have to get up and swap them over half way through the film! Quite annoying when you've made yourself comfy in bed with a hot chocolate, enjoying a night watching a love story unfold and not planning on moving again that night! Apart from that though, the special features are interesting to watch and theres plenty to keep you entertained on how they made they movie. All in all it is a good boxset and worth the money. Just don't put it on when your in a 'can't be bothered to move again' mood.
Go ahead Punk buy this and make your day!!! This is a DVD not to be missed, a blast from the past and a trip into a time when Cops knew how to get a result. Clint Eastwood is fantastic as Dirty Harry, he wants to rid San Francisco of it's low life and will stop at nothing to do so. Each movie is a fast paced thriller that grips you and has you hooked until the final frame. A must for all Clint Eastwood fans and a must for those that are not because after this you will be ;)
Run-of-the-mill adaptation of the legendary computer game; "Doom" features the usual bunch of gung-ho, tough-as-nails, sub-Cameron space marines, sent out to eliminate a ravenous horde of mutants (surprisingly weak CGI and puppet work) who"re running amok on at an outpost in Mars. 'WWE' wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, turns in another competent performance (putting the unmitigated disaster that was "Walking Tall" behind him) in an otherwise rather dull and uninspiring movie. Former Bond girl Rosamund Pike also crops up in a spirited attempt to halt the customary post-Bond freefall into obscurity. For some reason the people behind this film decided to abandon some of the more intriguing aspects of the game; with little to no mention of Hell, "Doom" looses its supernatural angle, and becomes little more than a poor-man"s "Aliens" or an amateurish rehash of John Carpenter"s unjustly maligned "Ghosts Of Mars". Now I liked Dwayne Johnson in both "The Scorpion King" and "The Rundown": he"s not a bad actor, but "Doom" is about as much fun as watching someone else playing a computer game, though by the time its your turn; the credits have already begun to roll. Doomed.
The jewel of Hitchcock`s crown needed no polishing at all. Revered more than most fleshy flashy boxes, its bare-bones disc had already become an inevitable part of film collections all over the world. Still we are living in the age of special deluxe ultimate extended this- and that cut and so on, aren`t we? So it seems like this re-release was inevitable too.
The movie itself needs neither introduction nor review as a matter of fact. This is the one to be watched and to be marvelled at--the thriller of thrillers, the genre-defining horror movie. Behold what you are watching!
"Psycho" has attained such stature that rarely if ever a list of greatest films fails to mention it.
Even though some people thought some years ago it was high time for "Psycho" to be made again. I wonder on what project they are going to use their considerable talents next: the motion picture Citizen Kane? the static picture Mona Lisa?
In a movie not short of memorable, nerve- and genre bending cinema, some scenes stand out. The shower scene is the most "notorious" one of them all, no doubt. But the most shocking scene according to many is the one culminating to exposure of Norman Bates' "mother". Still, the most effective scene, or shoufd I say the most haunting one, in my opinion, is the one showcasing Bates with his stuffed birds and other artifacts.
The new, double-disc release indeed does justice to the masterpiece of suspense. Both audio and video transfer are fine. Additional material does not seem extra-terrestrial in this case.
All in all, thanks to enhancements and additions it features, this deluxe package leaves hardly any thing to be desired. It does an excellent job to quench the thirst of movie`s innumerable lovers.
If you are one of those millions who adore this classic, well, then you scarcely need any further recommendation I suppose. Anyhow, you got this one.
A real cult horror B movie. Brilliant even after all these years.
Verdict
Classic horror, The Fly will always make you squirm!
For those of you who love electric blues guitarwork, then this is a must for you.
from his earliest days with Procol Harem, through the 70's and 80's Robin Trower has remained a real artist with his Stratocasters.
Produced from Live Concert footage of his 2005 German Tour, and released under the excellent 'Rockpalast' identity, you are assured of the highest quality visual and sound reproduction.
Live concerts are not to everyone's taste, as you quite often do not get a true reproduction of the music, but not this time, this is superior in every way.
For those of you who like me, like to build-up a library of music sources, then it would be criminal not to have this in your collection, as it stands alone in its reference to electric guitar work.
The favourites are all there, too many to list, but Too Rolling Stoned and Bridge of Sighs stand a little higher from a playlist of excellent performances.
Being a Scotsman I would have loved to have had 'Caledonia' added to the menu, but nevertheless, this is by far the best I have ever seen and heard from this British exile, in particular 'Live'.
I don't want to show off but, with my surround-sound system at its best, I was certain that I had travelled to Germany to see this concert personally, the quality was so good from the DVD.
This has got to be one of my 'best buys' so far, and I am delighted that I have it in my collection, as I am certain you will when you buy it for yourself.
Really excellent stuff, highly recommended to all music fans, and devotees of great guitar work from the masters.
I am not a fan of country & western music, but I do like a good strong storyline, so I did approach this movie with some apprehension, as to whether I would like it or not.
I should not have been concerned, because this is a good and strong story and is not the usual ' retropective of 1950's America' and how good it was supposed to be.
The story of the young Johnny Cash was, as expected, a gritty and honest portrayal of an American Folk Hero, warts and all.
Excellent performances from Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, and an equally powerful and believable role as June Carter from Reese Witherspoon.
This is gritty realism about 1950's youth and the music they loved, with supporting lists of performers including Jerry Lee Lewis and the young Elvis.
What makes this film a level above all other films of a similar nature, is the very strong performances from both leading characters.
The way the film is constructed, you are almost immediately made aware of the tension and eventual electricity that smouldered between Cash and Carter, as they are thrown together on tours of the US.
A soundtrack worthy of any collection is a bonus as this film's power begins to build and build, so that the viewer is made aware quickly, that this is not simply a film about music, it is more about family values and the pressures fame brings to all who seek fame and fortune.
Visually the film is closely toned to reflect
1950's colours, so you can quickly become associated with the feeling of the times.
You could think that this is just another, 'poor boy becomes rich, against the odds' type of film, and you would be correct, but this story tells you much more about the life of the 'Man in Black'.
A very good film with strong characters, and great performances, lift this film into the 'must have' catagory.
You will not be dissappointed......
Good movie. Much better than expected. Slightly better than Football Factory, I felt it had a better story line. The violence scenes are not too many; some graphic enough but a touching story.
Superb, excellent entertainment. Much better than expected. Funny like the American Pie series, really side splitting. Highly recommended and its a decent 2 hour movie. Extras worth the watching also, some funny reels there too.
While the fourth film in the Potter franchise was entertaining and showed the revolution of special effects, the film itself felt a bit incomplete. The characters were all there, yet the plot felt rushed and unexplained. Mike Newell certainly brought his own ideas to the film, with the focus on teenage angst and romance troubles, while maintaining the sinister backdrop in which an evil power is growing just out of reach.
The climax of the film was especially enjoyable, with Daniel Radcliffe stepping out of his shell and delivering raw emotion when the scene demands it. The other teenage actors have matured too, with Rupert Grint once again providing the humour of movie.
Potter fans will love this film, with regard to the action sequences and the highly anticipated introduction of neurotic teacher Mad-Eye Moody and evil wizard Lord Voldemort, but viewers unfamiliar with the book may find themselves lost, as the pace of the film is rather fast. The film is enjoyable nonetheless, and has set fairly high expectations for film five.
An entertaining film but almost unrecognisable from the original book it is more an edited highlight. This has not stopped my teenage daughter and her friends from enjoying this greatly. The special effects are wonderful I think the film is to dark and scary for the very young. It would be difficult to follow the book exactly due to the length. But it has kept the feelgood factor and mystery of the books. It also has one of the finest supporting casts put together in many years.
Many people who buy Live Concert DVD's are slightly dissappointed when the actual footage and the tracks used, can fall far below that which you would expect from the domestic CD.
Followers of Live Concert performances. who buy Music DVD's, attempt to re-live the atmosphere of a live concert, and the electricity it creates.
This DVD is for you, regardless of whether you are a dedicated follower of 70's music, or not, this performance has to be added to your collection, as one of the most faithful reproductions of a Live Concert, I personally have ever heard.
Recorded Live in Carlos Santana's own homeground of Mexico, and as a tribute to the life of Cesar Chavez, there is real emotion here.
Santana proves to all viewers, both dedicated fans and lovers of crisp guitar work, that he is the mastercraftsman.
Originally this DVD was only available from the US as an import, it is now widely available and is one of the best of this type of Concert recording.
The old and trusted favourites are there with a new modern emphasis, and with the likes of the classic........
Black Magic Woman, Samba Pa Ti and Soul Sacrifice and other remarkable melodies, this concert has it all.
You can feel the love transmitting to the audience and its return multiplied as Santana builds up his fretwork to the constant rythmn of the percussion and congas.
For owners of good sound systems, this 97 minute concert is heaven, as you feel that you are actually on stage with the band.
This DVD is the most comprehensive live set from Santana for many years, and should be purchased soon, so that the smile on your face can begin as you are transported into a Mexican wonderland of music.
Wow......should have bought this a long time ago......
Another absolutely brilliant series from the gang at sacred heart! Scrubs simply gets better and better with each series....I cant wait for the next, its completely addictive.
Fantastic plot . It really catches your eye as the story reveals the truth . John Travolta plays an excellent part as Ex Army officer Tom Hardy . It proves who your enemies really can be . All your friends can be enemies in this film .Watch it !!!!!
