  • Closer [2004]

I wasn't prepared to be impressed with this film. On paper it looks rather pretentious and vapid, and reliant on it's four big names to market it.
I'm pleased to report however that my initial estimations were blown away when I watched Closer.
The level of acting was universally outstanding from all four actors; each embodying his/her character with excellent conviction. It was this that made me accept for the first time in a while that there are big names out there who can bring the talent to match the paycheck.
It was a bit of a different role for Julia Roberts, and she did it justice. Jude Law played the deceptive, weak cad extremely well (highly ironic given the current state of his love life!). Portman was absolutely radiant in her role, and I was really impressed with Clive Owen; after the wooden-beyond-comprehension performance in 'Arthur', he pulled off a very convincing character, which displayed some depth.
I worried that the director's intent to give us a portrayal of the darkness of modern romance would crash and burn, but it really worked well, and indeed provided the essence of the film.
The ending had just the right amount of implication to satisfy its audience. The point at which each character ended up seemed entirely appropriate to me. The final scene was excellent, both structurally (it echoes the first sequence) and in terms of its connotations.
Not as deeply depressing as 'Requiem For A Dream', but almost as good, Closer is certainly not a heart-warmer, but is a very interesting slice of realism. Nice to see an intelligent piece of film-making, which these days seems ever-more-rare.

  • In Good Company [2004]

On paper this looks like nothing more than one of your run-of-the-mill rom-coms, but maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. Having no real expectations, I was very pleasantly surprised.
The acting was commendable on all counts, which made the characters attractive to watch; of course the essence of any enjoyable film.
I was captivated throughout, and the ending made it for me, as it steered clear of the predictable cheesy final scene which seems so obligatory within the genre nowadays. I was left to ponder the ending and what it implied, which ultimately made watching this film a slightly more meaningful experience than I've had with similar films.
Thoroughly enjoyable, and very funny in parts too. Recommended.

Davina's Power of 3 workout is fantastic, I am not a big fan of exercise but I actually enjoy doing this workout 2-3 times a week! The exercises are easy to follow and the instruction is great. It looks like they all had a great time making the dvd. Davina is inspiring in all she has achieved.
big thanks to her for helping me firm up my rear!

  • Orphee [1950]
    Norman Boyd 20 Jul 2005

If you don't like B&W films - DON'T read on....your prejudice will stop any open mindedness you will need to experience this film! If you loath French films... well you've got the idea!
I watched this years ago and many images are vivid 10 years on. Orpheus falls for a French version of the Hepburn woman and becomes besotted. She is his muse, inspiration, and life. She is in fact Death! She visits him nightly in his bedroom and gradually draws him to her world. Bearing in mind this is over 50 years old, the effects certainly stay with you. "Les miroirs sont les portes par lesquelles la Mort va et vient". Orpheus' journey to the underworld is strange. There are certain elements that reward multiple viewings. It washes over you and facets drip and stay in your thoughts.
Did I mention its context - besides the Greek allusions - is post-war France/Thrace It contains a French cafe, motorbikers, in-jokes about existentialism?
A true film studies course recommendation - meaty, stimulating, weird, but fascinating offering from Cocteau, the guy who did Beauty & the Beast - no, not the Disney version! And for fans of Liv Tyler's "Stealing Beauty" - Jean Marais - Orpheus is the old man in THAT film!

  • Alien vs Predator (Single Disc Edition) [2004]
    David Bowen 20 Jul 2005

Started out slowly, confused middle and strange ending.
However I enjoyed it. Couldn't help thinking it would have gone in a slightly different direction and been much, much better with a different lead - Sigourney Weaver.

  • 24: Series 1-4
Georgia Gale Grant 19 Jul 2005

Tick - boooooom tick - booooom. Watch one episode of one series and it is this noise, the passing of time, that will remain etched upon your mind, endlessly repeating, for hours.
Well... maybe that's a touch melodramatic, but drama makes this show what it is, one where lives are expendible and back-biting and treachery are just around every corner.
The format is the same for every series. Threat to USA, bad guys are planning something big, Jack Bauer (Counter Terrorism Unit special agent) finds them, he gets kidnapped/tortured/attacked (delete as appropriate), he escapes (miraculously), kills the bad guys, makes his way to the BIG BOSS and usually takes him out too. The glory of America is returned. Somewhere along the line, Jack's family get kidnapped/killed and CTU desert him as a 'rogue agent'.
It's a good idea, the whole thing shows in real time, so one day really does take 24 hours to watch, nothing is ever what it seems to be, and the story is only wrapped up within the last 5 minutes, so it certainly keeps you watching.
However, the question I am asking, with a season 5 showing in America in January is 'How many bad days can Jack Bauer have before it all becomes TOTALLY unbelievable?'

  • Nothing To Lose
    Jason Lunn 17 Jul 2005

  • Will and Grace: Complete Series 1 [2001]
    Kim 15 Jul 2005

Love it, controversial when released because 'shock horror' one of the main characters is gay! So what? It's brilliant, the first episode where the characters are introduced is spot on, and amazingly, not too blatant!
I think it's fab, if you loved friends, sex in the city, any of those then it's a must! If you didn't... well why not give it a shot anyway?

  • Starsky And Hutch - The Complete First Season [1976]
    Julie Ainsworth 09 Jul 2005

If you grew up with this series as I did in the 70's then this dvd set is a must !!! One episode I'm very fond of is "A Coffin For Starsky" Where Starsky (my Fave...) is injected with a poison and he and Hutch have to work out who.I'm sure a lot of you have your favourite episodes and will enjoy the memories of watching them again and again.
Buying the other dvd seasons already.:-)
Do not miss the opportunity to own the whole series. Some stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry.a really good mix from an excellent series...A real blast from the past.

  • Man On Fire (Two Disc Special Edition) [2004]
    John Redman 08 Jul 2005

Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott is a fast-paced action thriller. It boasts a wonderful performance by Dakota Fanning as the child Washington is hired to protect. The sparky relationship between these leads is fun to watch.
Washington plays Creasy, a washed-up, alcohol loving ex-CIA agent. He becomes bodyguard for the young daughter of a wealthy family in Mexico City. Of course the child is kidnapped by while in Creasy's care, even though he takes out a number of the kidnappers in the process. The ensuing exhange of ransom for the girl is compromised when the police arrive and shoot the brother of the gang leader. He kills the girl and Creasy goes on the rampage. As he tracks down those involved in the kidnapping the body count rises, as does the artillery he uses and the explosive nature of his revenge. Some of those on his hit list are either police or connected to the police, while others are connected to the family. When the girl's Mexican father is implicated Creasy allows him to shoot himself. We then find out the girl is still alive and Creasy joins forces with her American mother to save her. The climactic ending sees Creasy blow himself up - literally a 'man on fire' - as he takes the gang boss with him. As well as the two main performances there are excellent cameos by Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken, while the film is shot at a cracking pace with tension constantly mounting. This is a must for fans of action films, but it also has a very soft side when the relationship between Fanning and Washington is developed. This then provides the film's raison d'etre and directly leads to the exciting ending.

  • Sex and the City: Series 1 - 6 (Shoe Box)
    Jorden Esson 30 Jun 2005

Sex and the city is funny, To me it told the story of an amazing love story of Carrie & Big. I thought that it was so sweet when Big came to rescue Carrie in Paris. The other three main characters have their own up's and down's in their sex life. The funniest Character in the story would have to be Samantha Jones. She is Big Sexy and Bold. The girls are all so amazing i just wish that they where still together and produceing more.

  • Carry On Screaming [1966]
    Graham Howson 27 Jun 2005

One of the best Carry On's in my opinion. The film has quite an Eerie feel to it and Harry H.Corbett is excellent as a detective.

  • Species 2 [1998]
    Anthony Scullion 27 Jun 2005

Entertaining enough on it's own merits, but, as usual with sequels, not a patch on the original. I own both and I have watched species 2 almost as much as the first. The lad playing Patrick is fit which helps too!
