  • Midgets vs Mascots [DVD]
    Michelle Moore 13 Feb 2011

There is more than one type of comedy film. You have the typical big hit Hollywood movies staring actors such as Owen Wilson, Jim Carey and Adam Snadler, which of course are hilarious on the big screen with your popcorn in hand and tears rolling down your cheeks. Then you have the Jackass types, much like this one, where it is the stupidity of the individuals involved that make up the laughs.

The title Midgots vs Masscotts gives the plot away in one - little people vs. individuals dresses up in costume, battling it out in a series of tasks to win a prize. It is set out as a documentary style with the public in the surrounding space unbeknown as to what is about to happen near them. There is no high-tech computer generated images of any sorts, the pain you see is the pain of the faces of those involved, the sweat, spit and sick is all part of the overall effect.

The movie is funny and very enjoyable, but if like me, you picked it up for the appearance of Jay and Silent Bob star Jason Mews, then be as disappointed as I was. It seemed to mention his name on the cover for the fact he is one of only two big names attached to the movie, the late Gary Coleman being the other. I was gutted by his lack of actual appearance.

It was funny and disgusting at times, but right to go straight to DVD. It certainly doesn't have the same effect as Jackass.

  • The Rebound [DVD]
    Michelle Moore 13 Feb 2011

The Rebound takes two individuals from very different periods in their lives and drops them in each other's paths. What follows is a story where the two parties must overcome their differences to a point where they can find love, but the question is can they continue on this path.

Katherine Zeta-Jones plays Sandy a 40 something year old woman just coming out of a marriage with two young children and a stressful job and this is one of the finest roles she has portrayed. She is a very believable and emotionally driven character. Justin Bartha plays Aram, a 25-year-old college graduate and a man lost in life. He gives much more in this role than in The Hangover. He sure knows how to deliver a line and balance the life between work and play.most of the time. These two seem like the oddest pair in the world, chalk and cheese, but somehow their relationship works, for a while anyway.

Bart Freundlich, the director and the man handling all the magic has done wonders with this movie. The comedy is brilliant, the romance is spot on although not conventional at all times and the ending in particular will have people believing in love, especially with February 14th just around the corner. The manner in which strong issues can still be expressed while not overcast by the more comical nature of the film is outstanding and remains strong and primary important.

The Rebound is certainly not your typical romantic comedy, but it will have aspects many individuals can relate to in some degree.

  • Mad Men - Season 1-3 [Blu-ray]
Leon Xavier Finch 12 Feb 2011

    ** Perfection **
Portraying the late 1950s to the early 1960s through the lives of the men and women working at a Madison Avenue advertising agency - it doesn't seem like a hook that would immediately draw you in.
However, I highly recommend just dipping your toe in once and I guarantee you'll definitely be on the end of that hook.
Opening our eyes to an ENTIRELY different era, Mad Men is divisive, especially to those that think it glorifies misongeny, loose morals and commonplace bigotted attitudes towards homosexuality, racism, sexism, etc, etc.
Look a little closer though and the gorgeous fashions, outrageous behaviour and wonderful subtextual writing are the things that TV drama dreams are made of!!
This is definitely a great era to be a man - drinking and smoking at work is the norm, washing a worn shirt is unusual (just get a new one from your desk drawer!) and being able to fool around with any woman you want is thoroughly accepted behaviour.
The women tend to not have so much fun unfortunately, often suffering in silence it seems, whist there men philander on a grand scale.
Once again though, look a little closer and you'll find that it's the women who are strong of character, who have the last word and who generally get their way in the end.
I cannot fault any of the performances here, with John Hamm, January Jones, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery and Bryan Batts being particular standouts.
I asked santa for this for Christmas and bless him, he came through for me and hugely thankful I am - everybody else should give this try and seriously treat themselves.
The very least you'll get from it is why tractors and office parties simply dont mix.

Made Men - don't we all wanna be one?

  • The Social Network [DVD]
    Ross Miller 12 Feb 2011

David Fincher has always been a diverse filmmaker, directing everything from Alien 3 and Se7en to Fight Club and Zodiac. But even for Fincher the idea of making a movie about the founding of Facebook, what is at the end of the day just a website, seemed a bit of a stretch.

But as it turns out in the hands of Fincher, as well as screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), the story of how Facebook was created is a compelling one, filled with real drama and depth that most audiences probably weren't prepared for.

Based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, the film tells the story of the creation of Facebook and the people behind it, namely Mark Zuckerberg (Jessie Eisenberg), Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake). The film flips back and forth between chronicling the origins of the website and the two lawsuits Zuckerberg found him in against his best friend Eduardo and three other Harvard University students who feel he stole the idea for Facebook from them.

What easily could have been a boring and uninteresting story for anyone not into computers, Fincher, Sorkin and the stellar cast make this a fascinating story. The decision to frame the film as jumping back and forth between the origins of the site and the ensuing lawsuits years later was a risky one but it gives the film a sort of energy that's only bested by the unbelievably well written dialogue. Sorkin's script is punchy, attention-grabbing and compelling in a way that's just not seen in movies these days. Whether the characters are arguing about personal relationships (such as a highlight opening a scene involving a fight between Mark and his girlfriend, played by Rooney Mara) or spouting computer coding jargon that the average Joe normally wouldn't (want to) understand, what is being said is always gripping.

What helps give the film the speedy pace that it has (the 2 hours just whizz along) is the score. Composed by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, as well as composer Atticus Ross, the score has an addictive, sometimes almost eerie quality that gets under your skin and helps to carry you through the film. It also works just as well as a soundtrack on its own out with the film as it does within the film itself.

As with any film based on a true story, questions are going to be raised about just how much shown in the film is 100% the truth. Of course it's not going to be as life is never as exciting as it is in the movies. This is a dramatization of real life events not an exact replica of it, otherwise it would just be a documentary (although that's not to say all documentaries necessarily tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth!). What matters isn't how truthful the film is to what really happened (something tells me the real life people aren't half as interesting as the way they're portrayed here) but rather that the story is told in a compelling and engaging way and that's most definitely the case with The Social Network.

The amount of buzz and praise surrounding The Social Network may lead you to think that this is another overrated Oscar-bait film. But that is far from the case - this really is as good as its reputation suggests, telling what might have been a, frankly, boring story in the best of ways in pretty much all facets possible. Another top notch film from Fincher, one of today's greatest directors.

  • The Town [DVD]
    ross kerr 11 Feb 2011

This is Afflecks finest movie. If you like HEAT with Pacino and DeNiro then you will like The Town, it's as simple as that.
This movie didn't get the ratings it deserved.

  • Starhyke Complete series 1 [DVD]
    Fiona Brown 10 Feb 2011

My favourite film of all time is Galaxy Quest. It's funny, clever and it parodies sci-fi conventions in a very informed way (anyone that's ever been to a proper convention knows what I mean). So whenever I see a sci-fi comedy I always buy it. I'm also a big fan of Red Dwarf, so the potential of another similar styled British comedy was really appealing. I've also seen Hyperdrive too, but like most things recently coming out of the BBC it had promise but never lived up to expectation.

I must be honest, I very nearly turned Starhyke off after the first episode. I can see the difficulties in writing about a world with no emotion in a comedic way - there are a few jokes and it does have a couple of places that draw a smile here and there, but it's never really 'laugh out loud' funny. Thankfully, I persevered and I'm very glad I did. The second episode was much funnier and the characters begin to become more real. You can also tell that the actors got on as they obviously had a lot of fun making the series. Seeing Claudia Christian dressed up as Manga character Sailor Moon was hilarious, especially with the pseudo Japanese she and Doctor Striker are speaking. I knew Suanne Braun was a singer as well as an actress, but she has an amazing voice and it's such a shame that the scene she sings in was only about ten seconds long.

The series gets better and better, by the final episode you are truly hooked and I've been trawling the internet for clues to what happens to the characters after the cliff-hanger ending. Jeremy Bulloch as Doctor Striker steals the show - he is the comedy glue that sticks the whole thing together. He has many of the funniest lines (and scenes), and without doubt, he's the best drunk I've ever seen on TV. I want to buy a CD of the song "Grandma get you feet off the table and give the cheese a chance" that's a song I'd like to hear Jeremy singing!

All in all, this is a great series. The budget obviously wasn't as much as other sci-fi series like doctor who or Battlestar Galactica, but I don't think it matters. It's an enjoyable comedy and once you get past the not-so-funny first episode it really goes from strength to strength. The space scenes are really well done, as is most of the FX and CGI in the series. The holoscreens are really cool, I'd give up my I-Phone for one of those any day.

Well done to whoever made the show and lets hope there's a second series coming soon (I really need to know what happens next!!!)

Starhyke isn't the best show you'll ever see. but it's not the worst either. Give it a try, at least the people that made it got off their backsides and tried to make something truly original - for that alone we should support it.

A spaceship from the distant future travels back in time to stop an alien invasion intent on destroying the Earth in the future. Captain Blowhard (Claudia Christian, Babylon 5) and her crew of nitwits are our only defence against being annihilated in the future. Can they stop the aliens completing their plans?

  • Great British Railway Journeys [DVD]
    Mike Evans 10 Feb 2011

When the series was first screened on BBC-2 I was unsure whether Michael Portillo was the right person to host this programme, but clutching his faithful Bradshaw's Railway Handbook, I was soon won over. Portillo obviously has a passion for the days of steam railways and the historic part that railways played during Britain's great industrial past. I regretted not recording it from the start but I am now so grateful that I have the entire 20 part series on 4 disks. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the age of steam trains the geographical atlas that such railway lines created. Bradshaw's Handbook also covered places of interests, many of which are still with us to this day

  • Inception [DVD]
    Alex Oswell 08 Feb 2011

Inception is a great film, but it is more than that. It boasts an epic scale and an against-the-clock pace that will help you sail through its run time. But as it confined to the world of dreams it conversely shrinks in scale at the same time, always keeping you grounded. An amazing visual feat, great special effects and world hopping locations take you through the intricate plot which, cleverly some may add given its dream-based story, still keeps you guessing even at the end. Be warned, a second viewing is essential as the plot can take some working out. However, given the film's brilliance, that extra viewing will be worthwhile.

A edge of your seat thriller that will test your concentration to the limit

  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Movie [DVD]
    Rebecca 08 Feb 2011

Although this film gets a lot of bad press it isn't as horrible as you'd think, if it is taken as more of a comedy. When this film is compared to the series it will disappoint but if separated from the franchise it can be enjoyed for what it is. A teen movie.

The first installment in the Buffy the Vampire slayer franchise.

  • Robin of Sherwood - Michael Praed [DVD]
    Paul Stephens 03 Feb 2011

Despite the various versions of Robin Hood committed to film, without doubt the greatest take on the tale is TV's Robin of Sherwood, an eighties series featuring Michael Praed in the title role, it also co-stars Ray Winstone who provides a wonderful portrayal as one of Robin's merry men, namely Will Scarlett.

Robin of Sherwood is one of those shows whereby all the elements come together, superb casting, beautiful photography, wonderfully written episodes and an award winning soundtrack from Clannad enhancing the mood and feel of the whole piece.

Over the years, RoS has been released on video and subsequently DVD, but on bluray, the show has a completely new lease of life, infact the show has never looked so good. What a fantastic set this is to show off what bluray can actually achieve.

Everyone must surely know the story of Robin Hood, RoS puts a slightly different spin on things, to include witchcraft and sorchery, to show characters that evolve, characters that make mistakes and don't necessarily always triumph over evil.

If you already own the DVD versions and are wondering whether to invest in this bluray set, I would urge you to delay no further and buy now. This is a superb show, a superb set and a superb upgrade.

  • The Town [DVD]
    Kashif Ahmed 02 Feb 2011

Following on from his directorial success with 'Gone Baby Gone', actor /director Ben Affleck chalks up another winner with Boston crime thriller 'The Town'. Working class armed robber Affleck tries to turn over a new leaf when he falls for a girl his gang took hostage in a recent heist. 'The Town' may tread familiar crime genre territory but all it's done which such verve and intensity that you rarely notice the narrative clichés. Ben Affleck ought to be applauded for his efforts both in front of and behind the camera; for he balances out the human drama with good action sequences and an excellent, 'Heat'-esque gun-battle at the end (listen out for the brilliant use of sound editing with the sonic grenade). Great ensemble acting, brutal violence and authentic Bostonian accents / dialect. An excellent film overall, brilliantly executed and thoroughly entertaining to boot. Worth a purchase.

  • Surveillance [DVD] [2008]
    Kashif Ahmed 01 Feb 2011

brilliant, mildly disturbing and irredeemably twisted tale from David Lynch's daughter; Jennifer: 'Surveillance' sees FBI agents Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond arrive in small-town America to piece together a string of grisly murders. But nothing is quite what it seems, as contradicting filmed testimonies from suspects and witnesses only add to the confusion. Bill Pullman is on good form whilst Julia Ormond, who worked with Jennifer's famous father on 'Inland Empire', puts in an elusive and captivating performance in what's easily her most daring role since 'Smilla's Feeling for Snow'. Well acted and directed, 'Surveillance' is an intriguing hybrid of surreal serial killer flick meets modern police procedural, and though you should be able to see the twist coming before the reveal, it's still a dark trip worth taking.

  • Out of Sight [Blu-ray] [1998]
    Paul Stevenson 30 Jan 2011

As the third in a sequence of films adapted from Elmore Leonard novels (after Get Shorty and Jackie Brown), this film has to be the stand out. George Clooney is the stand out, in a role where he provides the kind of chemistry with Jennifer Lopez that movie makers would give their right arm to continually achieve. The clear, crisp picture quality on Blu-Ray does a lot to enhance Steven Soderbergh's style of trying to bring a different colour or shade to each of the sets. This film is more of a visual feast so it is difficult to determine whether the superior sound quality, that Blu-Ray brings with it, greatly benefits this film to any extent. The behind the scenes documentary is the stand out amongst the extra, providing an excellent insight into the making of the movie and includes what appears to be a great on set joke, between some of the cast, about the competency of the director. One of the top 10 movies in my collection.
