    Excellent value.

  • Journey To The Centre Of The Earth 3D [2008]
    Jevon Taylor 02 Dec 2008

You have to be careful when you remake a much-loved classic, especially one whose charm is partially derived from its vintage and genre ambiance. The 1959 "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" is a classic of camp sci-fi awash with enchanting (rather than persuasive) special effects, lurid sets, sceneries and backgrounds and a charismatic performance from James Mason. Its drawbacks were hammy performances from Pat Boone and others, shaky moments in the plot (the love affair) and other genre hilarity. Unfortunately for the 2008 remake, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D", makes the '59 that little bit more amiable, and the persistence with the CGI is a real problem. Now camp is replaced by comedy, which is ironically taken more seriously. Brendan Fraser is no Mason, the special effects are an eyesore, occasionally standing out from the rest of the film. That, however, might have been different in the cinema, I have only seen the film on DVD. Despite this, we are talking about a PG here, and it is made for children, not children and cinema aficionados or sci-fi geeks. And whilst the latter might not enjoy this film too much, it does retain enough of the adventure of Jules Verne's book to hold the attention of younger viewers, who no doubt will like the dinosaurs, insects and fissures the film has to offer.

  • It's A Wonderful Life [1946]
    Jevon Taylor 02 Dec 2008

"It's a Wonderful Life", everyone's favourite saccharine Christmas film, but why? We are confronted by a man, George Bailey, who cries, on Christmas Eve no less, "It would be better if I was never born!", and contemplates suicide. Then we witness, with him, courtesy of his guardian angel all of the good, self-less acts he has committed during his life, starting with saving his brother from drowning and including saving the town from the evil Mr. Potter, who has now brought ruin to our friend. The film is simplistic, sentimental and squeaky clean. Which is fine for a family film usually aired at Christmas. But its characters are poorly realised and two dimensional, as are the relationships between them, Bailey and his childhood sweetheart. Really it is a portrait of how people, particularly Americans, would like to be, be seen, and see each other. For all that it is well-crafted, entertaining, a classic of sorts and much-loved. I know why some people love it, but would never call it a great film myself.

  • Donkey Punch [2008]
    Jevon Taylor 02 Dec 2008

In my opinion, the first half of "Donkey Punch" is amazing. In it, three regular English lasses from Leeds get ready, go out, meet some guys, drink a bit, go out on a yacht, swim, flirt, take some drugs and exchange dirty stories, whilst on holiday in Mallorca. Two of them decide to get down and dirty in the yacht's bedroom with, initially two, then three of the young men. The third girl, the more innocent one, the one you know will survive whatever is going to happen, stays up top with the fourth, nicer, guy. All of this, as seedy and occasionally cringe inducing as it is, is filmed as though this is the archetypal, the ideal, the young women's truly desired and dream holiday in Mallorca. It looks beautiful, as though filmed by Nestor Almendros (who shot "Days in Heaven"), and easily overcomes the occasional flaw in its pacing or script. Then something happens, or "goes wrong" (you'll know exactly what by the time it hits you), and our thriller/horror movie gets started. The second half disappointed me, but it has its moments, and the film is worth seeing if only for the first half. Which, again, I will reiterate, is great.

  • Iron Man (2 Disc Edition)
    Jevon Taylor 02 Dec 2008

"Iron Man" was one of the more eagerly anticipated comic book adaptations of recent years, starring Robert Downey Jnr. as Tony Stark, arms magnate. Kidnapped, tortured and forced to build a super rocket for terrorists in the Middle East, Stark rebels against his captors and, once he rescues himself, his past life. (Now he has seen what his weapons really do.) This does not, however, go unopposed. "Iron Man" is a comic book, and film that has a moral view, rather unlike "300", for example, embedded in the real world. This, for me, is what sets the movie apart from other films like it. However, Stark response to his reborn ethics has disappointingly little impact on what he does. He still makes weapons, and might is still right, especially now it is directed against the correct people. I am not saying that that is wrong per se (just less interesting than the alternatives), and it does make for an entreating action film. Just not much more. And the action is good, exciting and, much like a James Bond film, directed against the evils of capitalism, and in the case of "Iron Man", at least superficially, imperialism. Almost all good ... and well worth a watch if you like action movies

  • Gossip Girl [2007]
    Kaleigh 01 Dec 2008

Well Gossip Girl, where do i start. It has 8 main characters in it, some including Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford and Kristen Bell. These are some brilliant actor/actresses. I very big fan of "The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants", well it has the same actress from that called Blake Lively.
This was shown on ITV 2 when it aired and was a huge success with me and with the rest of the country Im sure.
The story line stays the same throughout the whole series, they have some killer storylines, literally in some cases.
There is some good characters, and i cant say that i can relate to the character because i am not rich and live in the Upper East side of New York. But i can relate to them being a teenager like me struggling in the world.
In Gossip Girl, the series, there is many things that go on in the school Constance, such as pool partys, sleepovers, truth or dare, and of course there is a bitch in the shape of Blair Woldorf followed by her crew of loyal followers all compeating to become the Queen Bee.
Her Best friend Serena, went away for a while because she done a bad thing, but then she came back and became Blair's best friend again. When she came back, she found someone else too in the form of a boy, A Lonely Boy From Brooklyn.

But when long lost friend came back sending gifts for Serena, then trouble wasnt to far away when it involves Georgina Sparks. This was the reason why Serena had left but this one girl made her afriad of telling Serena's Secret to the world, but the bad girl always gets defeted by the bitch on the scene. "I'm the only bitch around here".

An upsetting season finalle following the break-up of Serena and Lonely Boy Dan.
    But back next year.

    xoxo

    Gossip Girl.

P.S It is a brilliant series one for the chick flicks...

  • No Retreat No Surrender - 1/2/3

Quite an exceptional film, well documented with lots of suspense and action packed martial art.

    Will recommend this to anyone.

  • Lost Highway [1997]
    Ralph 30 Nov 2008

This film is brilliant. Aesthetically it is chilling. The acting is cruel and real. The plot is fast paced and disturbing and the soundtrack is eerie and capturing.
This film is a must-have for anyone who likesDavid Lynch. It is definitely one of his best.
Even if you don't understand any of the possible philosophical subtexts picked up on by repeated viewings then you will at least be thrilled and scared to the core by the amazing imagery and seedy characters. It certainly burnt on my retina.
I think if possible it is very good to get a David Lynch DVD which contains an interview or so. This one contains two. One from the time around which this film was made and one made in retrospect. Although Lynch likes to keep you guessing about what his films really mean he is bound to shed some light on it. He speaks much wisdom.
Unfortunately it seem this slipcase is very rare jumping in and out of print every few seconds. I say get it while you can. It looks very nice.

Fred and his wife Renee are living in a luxurious flat in LA. Then they begin receiving mysterious fuzzy camcorder videos taken of them inside their house. But one of these videos depicts incriminating evidence which sends Fred down... psychological horror ensues....

  • Kung Fu Panda [2008]
    Jevon Taylor 29 Nov 2008

'Kung Fu Panda' is the first animated children"s film I have seen in a long time which does not cater to the more sophisticated, or rather smuttier, sides of parent"s humours. Whilst that is theoretically refreshing, in actuality it made it a little less fun for me to watch (still fun though, because it"s nice). However, adults are not the target audience for this film, children are. And by the reactions of my niece and nephew the film is super entertaining for them. It does, after all, feature kung fu fighting tigers, tortoises, pandas (of course), monkeys and even a tiny praying mantis. They fall over, hurt themselves, but not really, tease/pick on each other (though the film does disapprove of that), and talk with funny voices. What more could a child want ... a happy moralistic ending. And it delivers that too. Where I think the movie did fall short, for my adult"s eyes at least, was the characterisations. The animated characters didn"t seem quite as alive as Shrek and company. It also walked the fine line between opening a child"s eyes about aspects of a different culture and closing them again with stereotypes. Different people might have different opinions about that, but I think it pulled it off, remaining good wholesome fun.

  • Siren Of Atlantis
    Michael Rutt 29 Nov 2008

There is an old saying that if you wait long enough, your patience will eventually be rewarded and this is certainly the case with this more than welcome and long overdue DVD release of this fascinating, exotic fantasy which mixes a heady cocktail of lush romanticism and hauntingly unforgettable "cinema noir".
Featuring"The Queen of Technicolour", Maria Montez, fondly remembered for her Hollywood "Eastern" roles in such highly coloured exotica as "Cobra Woman","Arabian Nights","Ali Baba","Sudan",etc, this dark and brooding extravaganza, with it's remarkable monochrome cinematography by ace cameraman Karl Struss, presents us with this glamourous icon at her most alluringly seductive.
More than ably supported by French heart-throb and real life husband Jean Pierre Aumont at his most photogenically dashing and also by an admirable supporting cast featuring Dennis O'Keefe and Henry Daniell,Maria demonstrates exactly why so many moviegoers' hearts were broken, when sadly,in her early thirties she drowned while taking a hot saline bath to aid her slimming regime.
This rare and unique movie was strangely lost for years,
so at last here is an opportunity for all dedicated film fans to savour this unusual fable of mystery, love, greed, jealousy and murder.
Atlantis, the lost city is recreated with imaginative sets, ravishing costumes, inspired choreography and an involving and suitably dramatic score.
Adapted for the screen from the best selling novel by Pierre Benoir, this heartbreaking adventure proves assertively to the viewer why it has gained the cult status it has, since the film's initial release.
From the airless and claustrophobic,torch-lit chambers of the lost city to the stiflingly hot and arrid desert landscapes, this is a movie which wraps the viewer in a cloak of electric atmosphere, seldom achieved by modern cinema, despite it's technical wizardry and computer graphics.
Now this exciting DVD release will be seen by many new viewers, who otherwise would have been unaware of this once forgotten, "one of a kind" movie, which they will be proud to add to their collections.
Congratulations are due to Odeon Cinema for giving us all the opportunity to experience the moody magic of this remarkable and tantalising work of art.
If you consider yourself to be a serious film collector and you enjoy the unusual, this is a DVD you won't regret purchasing and at the very reasonable price is also a bargain not to be missed!

  • Gundam Wing Complete Remastered Edition
    Ravinder Chana 29 Nov 2008

Gundam Wing is a phenomenal Anime series!
Although many people believe Wing is overrated I think it is perfect!
All the characters are easily likable as they each have their own ideals and different personalities, don't be put off with the long complex information about the wars and operations as this anime is full of action and excitement all the way through, not to mention the unforgettable soundtrack and intros although they were made in the 90's the songs will get your adrenaline pumping!
The only major flaw I saw with this anime was it's quality as it was made in the 90's however, now it has been remastered. Don't miss your chance to buy this box set ,buy now!

  • Monster [2003]
    Micky 27 Nov 2008

This film is a great depiction into the life of Eileen Wuornos, 'America's First Female Serial Killer.' Charlize Theron was definately the best choice to play the part of the deluded killer and she rightly won an oscar for it. The way she speaks, acts and even looks, mirrors that of the true killer, and anyone who has seen documentaries on the real killer will be shocked by the stunning resemblance. Ricci does play a good part but isn't really the best actress for this role; the real girlfriend was a big butch woman with a square jaw and whiskers, whereas Ricci is a young elegant woman... total mismatch, but her performance makes up for it, making this one of the best depictions of a serial killer that I have seen to date. A must buy for anyone who likes a good film, some might find it hard to watch sometimes but all will most likely agree that it is a stunning depiction of a series of crimes which shocked America all that time ago.

A brilliant and moving depiction into the life of Americas First Female Serial Killer.

  • The Page Turner [2006]
    Barnaby Walter 26 Nov 2008

I am constantly trying to give foreign language films a fair chance when it comes to my screen viewing. It is likely that you, reader, will either be thinking "Jolly good thing, I should hope so!" or "Why bother. Stick with Shrek". I am pleased to say (with no pompousness meant) I belong to the first trend, and regularly seek out little know French gems, obscure Ukrainian jewels and the odd bit of German gold. The Page Turner is a French film that, for all it's potential, never manages to get to what it wants to say. The build up is hurried enough to make you frown a little, and when you get onto the real story there is a sense of "something big or bad is going to happen" but unfortunately never quite does. I love dramas that are about people and their feelings, emotional torment and its consequences. The type of genre that usually wavers between being pretentious or brilliant. This film is certainly not pretentious, but the brilliance mark, although within sight, is not quite met.

We are introduced to the would-be-heroine, Melanie, as a child when she is in her audition to music school playing the piano. She is distracted by one of the judges, famous pianist Ariane Fouchecourt, who inadvertently ruins her concentration mid piece. Ten years later Melanie gets a job as an au pair within the household of this pianist, and we are to believe she is out for revenge. When she becomes Ariane's page turner (turning the sheet music pages), and gets asked to turn for her upcoming performances, she realises she has a large amount of power over her. Ariane convinces herself she can only perform well when Melanie is near, the reasons for this are never fully investigated, but link to Ariane's past traumatic experience in a car accident and her possible feelings of romance towards Melanie. These feelings of romance are also vaguely touched upon. I am by far suggesting it needs full on lesbian sex scenes, which would lower the tone of the film to something more sordid, but the narrative stays the more irritable side of suggestive. Even so, this film is still worth watching for the dreamily calm way the story sweeps along, inviting you into its web of sexual tension and buried emotion. It's just a little disappointing some of the emotion remains buried for the entire film.

  • Sex and the City: The Movie [2008]
    James Wright 26 Nov 2008

I really think that this film is brilliant, it's one of those that you don't have to think too hard about, you can just lie back and enjoy it, with some chocolate or ice cream haha. People who take it too seriously, are silly, why not just take the film for what it is, some light-hearted fun. The characters are just as fun as the tv series, the story line is strong, and the film changes direction half way through. I don't think its too long, its just perfect to tell the story how it should be told, and its hilarious. The tv series was AMAZING, and this film is such a good follow up to keep you in touch with those classic characters you first fell in love with, Get Carried Away!

  • Adrift
    Jonathan Callow 26 Nov 2008

    "Nerve-shredding terror"? Hardly.

Firstly though, I'll dispose of any positivity right here so I can briefly concentrate on writing about why this film drowned in its own stupidity.

Adrift starts moderately well, it"s initially intriguing; the scene is set with a suitably dark air surrounding oblivious yet believable characters. The film is suitably shot, the pace is good and real promise develops; in fact the intro could easily have been the prologue to a good CSI episode.

By the time everyone started dying off in the most absurdly boring and unconvincing ways I really didn't care any more. Not only is the dialogue consistently dreadful but not one character is remotely interesting or likeable, which perhaps makes it less obvious who's next to accidentally murder their 'friend' or sever their own head with a seahorse (not part of the film), but surely it"s better to have people that at least feel "real" so there can be some genuine shock in the audience when someone winds up dead. I mean this isn"t Final Destination, where the ingenious routes to death are exactly why you"re watching it. Everyone"s bopping around in the sea in this picture, there"s little scope for visual domino effects or unexpected surprises, so strong character development, inventive relationships, genuinely impressive even though futile teamwork and believable deaths are essential - of course, sadly, none of these elements materialise.

Speaking of team work, their attempts at re-boarding the yacht are almost as pathetic as their perseverance. Not only are there obvious hand-holds on the stern which they should have gripped onto much earlier in the film to avoid hours of treading water, but, most annoyingly, I can think of an incredibly simple way for several clearly athletic people to boost one small woman several feet in the air whilst all treading water, perfectly high enough to climb back on board to rectify the idiocy that got them stuck in the water in the first place. Perhaps I"ve been watching too much synchronised swimming, but these death-awaiting young people emanate exceptional stupidity; I have no sympathy for them and no reason to recommend this film.

  • Cars (Disney Pixar) [2006]
    H A 26 Nov 2008

Brilliant movie for kids of all ages. Boys, young and old, love the racing but everyone can enjoy the humour, witty remarks and clever graphics of this movie. It has a great soundtrack which really helps you get into the groove of the film.

    Another Disney Pixar success story.

  • The X Files: I Want To Believe (2 disc Special Edition including Bonus Digital Copy)
    Ginette 26 Nov 2008

Big names and an original story idea that alas leaves you wondering why they bothered in the first place. The relationship between the two leads in this science fiction fantasy film answers the questions left at the end of the series.

Yet it does little to stand out from the many other films from this genre. The series gave fans the 'oh my god what's going to happen next' during every single episode.

The first film was a roller coaster ride of action. This film left me wanting and wondering if it could get any worse. I liked the fact that Mulder and Scully were together and it was not full of aliens or other weird stuff but I think it would have been preferable.

  • Batman Animated Season 1 - Volume 1
    Matt Bradley 25 Nov 2008

Batman The Animated Series appeared soon after the success of the two Tim Burton films "Batman" and "Batman Returns". The series brilliantly balances the dark, brooding atmosphere of Gotham City and its corrupt inhabitants, with action-packed adventures that are perfect for family viewing.

This four disc set contains the first twenty-eight episodes of the series, and features some of the best - including Emmy award winning episode Heart Of Ice, and a series of two-part specials which centre on popular villains such as Two Face and Cat Woman.

A brilliant way of introducing your kids to the Dark Knight and, of course, an essential for any Batman fan.

  • Red Dwarf - Complete Collection
    Kevin Stanley 24 Nov 2008

    Prologue
Abroad the Jupiter Mining Corporation mining ship Red Dwarf is a crew of 169 people. Rimmer (Chris Barrie) and Lister (Craig Charles), are second and third technicians respectively - the lowest ranked members of the crew - their job the most mundane jobs such as fixing the vending machines. They have a strong dislike of each other. Rimmer is disciplined. Lister is a slob. They bicker and fight constantly. This is the source of much amusement for other members of the crew and of course, us, the audience.
Red Dwarf is the product of excellent writing. The idea that this series is set in deep space is immaterial, it could have been set anywhere. It"s a sit-com that just happens to be set in space. The first season was undeniably cheap-looking, the sort of show that could have been filmed anywhere probably because they had a really small budget, but this isn"t Star Trek with sexy computers or immaculately uniformed crew members (apart from Rimmer). Lister the inventor of the fried-egg-and-chilli-pickle sandwich is a slobby, scruffy, lazy, bum with clothes covered in curry stains. The special effects are also cheap model shots but this only adds to the series" charm - in fact in later seasons, notably seven and eight the low-tech effects are replaced by CGI wizardary and actually end up looking less realistic.
    Season One
Lister has smuggled an unquarantined cat on board from Titan when on shore leave, when the Captain finds out he gives him a choice, hand over the cat for dissection or spend the rest of the trip in stasis. Luckily for Lister, and the cat, Lister chooses stasis. Unfortunately for the rest of the crew, as Rimmer is left alone to do the job of two men he ends up making an error and there is a radiation leak that kills the entire crew.
Holly (Norman Lovett), the ship"s computer, revives Lister, when the radiation falls to a safe background level, which happens to be three million years later. Lister is now most probably the only surviving human.
In an effort to keep Lister sane Holly the ship"s computer brings back Rimmer as a hologram, much to Lister"s displeasure, while Lister"s original cat, that had been pregnant, has over millions of years of breeding and evolution evolved into a humanoid cat (that is simply named Cat and is played by Danny John Jules) and is also the only survivor of his entire race.
Lister makes a decision, they"re going home! No mater what Earth is like, no matter if cochroaches have taken over, it"s got to be better than living in deep space.
Throughout season one Lister longs to meet up with his dead shipmates, even if for only one last time. The high point of season one are Balance of Power and Me2. In Balance of Power, Lister takes the Chef"s exam so that he can outrank Rimmer and be in charge. If he succeeds in intends to replace Rimmer with the hologram of Kristine Kochanski, one of the ship"s crew that he was in love with. In Me2 Rimmer works out that if they turn off all unnecessary systems that they can sustain two holograms. Rimmer and Lister fight over whether it will be a duplicate Rimmer or Kochanski. Rimmer wins the argument but gets more than he bargained for when he finds that he is actually unbearable to live with.
    Season Two
At the beginning of season two, the boys from the Dwarf, as they like to be known, find Kryten a "condom-headed" android whose only desire in life is to serve his human masters. He doesn"t instantly become a member of the crew but does so at the beginning of series three. Lister hates the way that Kryten won"t think for himself and he is sick of him listening to orders from Rimmer who is using the android for menial tasks. Lister tries to teach Kryten to have a life of his own and he is successful as Kryten rebels and takes off on Lister's space bike.
Highlights of season two are Better Than Life when the crew play a computer game that is so realistic it"s as good as the real thing. Unfortunately Rimmer is so wrapped up in his own failure and self loathing that he can"t help but turn this paradise into a disaster. Queeg is also excellently written and crafted. Not to give away the ending but when Holly is replaced by Queeg 500 the ship"s backup computer the crew try to help Holly to retain his former position as Queeg is working them so hard. The final decision over who should run the ship - Holly or Queeg - comes down to a chess match, although Holly would rather have played poker or tiddlewinks!
    Season Three
Season three was when Red Dwarf really got into its stride and with a wardrobe change for Lister and Rimmer as well as a general brightening of the sets it really started to look and feel a lot smarter in production terms. Holly has a sex change for no apparent reason and Kryten rejoins the crew this time as a full time cast member (now played by Robert Llewellyn).
Marooned is without doubt my favourite episode of season three. Lister and Rimmer are marooned on an ice planet with only dog food and pot noodle to eat. What"s more they are seriously short on fuel for heating Starbug (the space shuttle/pod that they are able to use to visit planets or ships which was introduced at this point and used much more heavily in season six), so they are burning books for Lister to keep warm. There is some fantastic dialogue between the two and it"s one of the rare moments that the two bear their souls to each other. The episode is almost entirely a two-hander between them and they do an excellent job of it. The writing is both poignant and extremely funny.

Polymorph (a parody of Ridley Scott"s Alien) is also a season three highlight and is the first ever episode to include an alien presence on board Red Dwarf. The polymorph is an alien with the ability to shape-shift and feeds on negative emotions, such as Lister"s fear, Cat"s vanity, Rimmer"s anger and Kryten"s guilt. Each of the crew members looses the emotion that was stolen by the polymorph with either negative or somewhat positive effects, such as Lister turning in a crazy killer, which is actually quite useful under the current circumstances.

    Season Four

Dimension Jump is the highlight of season four and brings with it the introduction of Ace Rimmer a daredevil test pilot for the space corps testing a new dimension jumping ship. Ace Rimmer and Arnold Rimmer do not get along at all well. Ace is handsome, courageous and selfless. Arnold Rimmer is weasely, weak and completely selfish. Lister, Cat and Kryten want Ace to stay with them, but he knows that there are a million other dimensions out there to visit.

DNA is also a season four highlight when the crew find a derelict spacecraft containing advanced technology including a DNA changing device. Kryten finds out what it is like to be human and the crew have to fight a monster mutated from one of Lister"s vindaloo curries.

    Season Five

Season Five has so many highlights and features one of the most popular episodes ever Back To Reality in which the crew, while investigating the wreck of the SSS Esperanto are affected by the despair squid that makes them all wish that they were dead. It has similarities to the Polymorph episode as each of the crew loose something dear to their own character that they think makes them most unique.

    Season Six

Season six saw the biggest change to the formula of the series yet as Red Dwarf itself was removed from the series and season six was set entirely aboard Starbug. The other big change was a move away from purely episodic storytelling. Season six had an actually story arc running all the way through it and what"s more it ended on a cliffhanger... one that was to span over three years until season seven was finally made.

Season six was my very favourite season of Red Dwarf and there are many highlights. The boys have lost Red Dwarf and in an effort to find it they commit themselves to 200 years in stasis while Holly pilots the ship through a dangerous region of space in order to try to catch up with the Red Dwarf and regain control. In the course of season six, Rimmer gets a hardlight halogram, in the episode Legion, which means that he can touch and feel his surroundings and they are once again attacked by a polymorph in Emohawk: Polymorph II. Gunmen of the Apocalypse is another episode similar to the Better Than Life episode where the action takes place inside an artificial reality videogame. And in Rimmerworld, Rimmer travels through a time-hole and populates a planet made entirely from clones of himself. The final episode Out of Time the crew find a time machine only to then bump into future versions of themselves that have turned into amoral, horrible, almost evil versions of themselves. Determined to sample the best that time has to offer they have along their travels become friends with Hitler and taken part in all manner of other corrupt dealings. Will the crew be able to stop the future versions of themselves and will an unlikely hero emerge?

    Season Seven
One of the most disappointing things about the seventh season of Red Dwarf is that Chris Barrie only appeared in four episodes. Kochanski, played by Chloƫ Annett (as opposed to Clare Grogan in the previous series) was added to the crew as a new regular character. Another factor that made season seven different from previous seasons was the fact that the studio audience was dispensed with in favour of canned laughter. This too was a move that I felt was taking the series in the wrong direction.
One of the highlights of season seven however is Duct Soup. Kryten is jealous because he thinks that Lister likes Kochanski more than him. When the ship"s power goes dead they get stuck together in a room and have to try to escape via the ventilation ducts. While they are trapped together they discover new things about each other that they didn"t know before including the fact Lister is claustrophobic. In several ways this episode is very similar to Marooned as they are telling each other personal stories and bonding in the process. They later find out that the power was intentionally cut by Kryten.

    Season Eight

Season eight saw a welcome return to Red Dwarf being filmed in front of a studio audience. I always think that this is an excellent way for actors to judge a reaction to their performance and something that pushes actors to perform better. A highlight of season eight is Back in the Red: Part III. Rimmer finds a sexual magnetism virus in the wreckage of Starbug and instantly becomes irresistibly attractive to every female crew member aboard the recently recreated Red Dwarf - that was recreated in an earlier season eight episode by the nanobots discovered in season seven that rebuilt Lister"s arm after he lost it. Rimmer also starts to impress Captain Hollister and it is possible that he will be promoted. However we then find out that Rimmer is in an artificial reality program being watched by Captain Hollister as part of the trial that they are part of after they were court marshalled and jailed for having caused the radiation leak at the beginning of season one.

    Epilogue

The feel of the show changed with each new season and although the writing was always of a high standard its direction often changed too. No doubt in an effort to keep the series fresh. This worked in the case of season six but didn"t work so well in the case of seasons seven and eight when the writing took on a more puerile tone and the whole show seemed less intelligent. Add to this the move to CGI special effects and the show ended up a million miles away from where it had begun over a decade before.

Still audiences were as large as ever so ultimately it all comes down to fashions within TV and what audiences want. Maybe it was intended to appeal to younger audience or maybe I just got older.

Whatever the case may be the fact that Red Dwarf lasted so long and is now celebrating its 20th anniversary in fine style with this newly released DVD package goes a long way to demonstrate the lasting appeal that it has.

There is also strong rumours (if not actual facts) that TV channel Dave has recently signed to make new Red Dwarf episodes.

This really is testimony to the fact that Red Dwarf was popular with fans new and old as well as being critically acclaimed not to mention consistently superbly written, produced and directed.

In the end there are very few TV series that could claim to live up to success of Red Dwarf.
