Joshua Tree 1951 follows James Dean (the handsome James Preston) on his first steps to becoming the international icon of youth and rebellion. The film is a series of revealing and sometimes dreamlike vignettes that blend autobiographical and fictionalised elements to present a pivotal moment in a remarkable life. We follow Jimmy Dean during two periods of his life prior to becoming the international star that we all know today. In 1949, he joins UCLA as an acting major, a decision which ultimately estranged him from his father. Whilst there he wrestles with the mental and sexual constraints and boundaries of society and while demonstrating great acting skills he rebels against the system he finds himself within. Whilst in California he also starts to experiment with his sexuality, and finds solace in the beds of both men and women. The film's 'present tense' is in 1951, as Dean drives to the desert of Joshua Tree, California. Along for the ride is The Roommate (Dan Glenn), a struggling actor who lived and loved with Dean whilst at college. The friendship and intimacy he provides gives Dean a sense of security before embarking on his own path. Matthew Mishory presents his first feature; a brutal and honest exploration of Dean's complicated sexuality and formative relationships; Joshua Tree, 1951 redefines the boy behind the image for a new generation. Special Features: Short Film - Delphinium: A childhood portrait of Derek Jarman

Joseph undertakes a strange journey through the many rooms of the Sanatorium each of which conjures worlds composed of his memories dreams and nightmares. Adapted from a collection of short stories by Polish-Jewish writer Bruno Schulz The Hourglass Sanatorium dispenses with traditional narrative fashioning an audio-visual mosaic that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. As in The Saragossa Manuscript Wojciech Has fashions a cinematic universe composed with byzantine sets hallucinatory images and a gallery of grotesque characters. However his magical-realist vision of pre-WW2 Poland is tinged with the sober consciousness of the violence that would follow and the recreation of Joseph’s childhood in a Jewish ghetto foreshadowing the Holocaust. • People of the Mountains (Emberek a havason) [DVD]People of the Mountains (Emberek a havason) | DVD | (29/08/2016) from £14.49   |  Saving you £-1.50 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Arguably the most gifted Hungarian filmmaker of his generation, István Sz ts has been compared by critics to Ford, Vigo and Renoir. His forgotten masterpiece, People of the Mountains, is the story of a woodcutter and his family who live high in mountains of Transylvania. Forced out of their home, they are enticed into working for the very company that ejected them, only for their lives to begin to unravel one tragic misfortune after another. Shot almost entirely on location (in the harshest conditions imaginable), using mostly non-professional actors, a devotion to realism and the details of daily life, and an indictment of the prevailing conditions, this was a groundbreaking film. Sz ts auspicious debut was, however, refused a distribution license by Nazi minister for Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels and condemned as 'Communist propaganda'. In spite of this, the film went onto to win a major prize at the 1942 Venice Film Festival and later cited as an early model for the post-war Italian Neorealism movement, praised by Vittorio De Sica and Cesare Zavattini among others. A powerful, elemental vision suffused with poetic lyricism and a romantic anti-capitalist zeal, People of the Mountains is the jewel of Hungarian cinema of the period.
