A cross the course of history only a relative handful of filmmakers can be said to have developed and refined a language of cinematographic expression which inimitable belongs to its creator alone. Pedro Costa of our time exists within this select group and Colossal Youth is one of his sublime achievements. An intimate epic wherein present and past move as one Colossal Youth chronicles Ventura the towering Cape Verdean who has assumed the role of surrogate father to an untold number of characters around Lisbon and its now-razed neighbourhood of Fontanhas. Through Ventura's ghost-like visitations to figures such as Vanda Duarte (the central personage of Costa's previous In Vanda's Room) and repeated recollections of his past life as a newly migrated manual labourer Costa explores the nature and necessity of storytelling in the course of the human adventure. As with In Vanda's Room Colossal Youth lays bare the residence of documentary inside of fiction (and vice-versa) using a digital video aesthetic in which every single image resonates with an indescribably poetic and rarefied force. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Colossal Youth in concert with Costa's complementary short works Tarrafal The Rabbit Hunters and Our Man - all for the first time in the UK.

A free-form and darkly surreal adaptation of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Pavel Jurá ek's film also channels Lewis Carroll and Franz Kafka to create one of Czecholsovak cinema's most unique and deeply disturbing works. A man becomes lost on a country road and finds himself in an alternative, nightmare world that mirrors (then) modern-day Czechoslovakia. Needless to say the film was not warmly received by the authorities, and like his earlier surrealist masterwork Josef Kilián (1963), was promptly 'banned forever'. Jurá ek, who had earlier co-written V ra Chytilová's Daisies, Jind ich Polák's pioneering Ikarie XB 1 and Karel Zeman's A Jester's Tale, never made another film - but his legacy is one of the most profound, invigorating and important in all Czech cinema. This edition also contains a new 4K restoration presentation of Pavel Jurácek and Jan Schmidt s Josef Kilián.

This specially priced, Limited Edition 3-DVD set comprises three extraordinary features from a golden age of Eastern European cinema which came to be known as the 'Czechoslovak New Wave'. This brief period, from circa 1963 to 1969, produced an astonishing sequence of films that made a huge impact on world cinema. These three integral works of that most creative period were made in the most difficult of circumstances under the gaze of Government censors, yet achieved a miraculous and subversive marriage of content and form. Now, fifty years on, the films remain as remarkable as ever. The set includes: A Blonde in Love / Lásky jedné plavovlásky (Miloš Forman, 1965) Widely regarded as one of the great films of the 60s, this bittersweet romance unfolds as a wry critique of life under totalitarianism. Forman's sweetly seductive Oscar®-nominated feature remains a subtle and beautifully observed social satire. The Party and the Guests / O slavnosti a hostech (Jan Němec, 1966) Considered the most politically dangerous film made during the Czech New Wave - and subsequently banned forever - Němec's film is a biting satire of authoritarianism and conformity. The film's universal relevance continues to this day. Larks on a String / Skřivánci na niti (Jiří Menzel, 1969) Menzel's audacious, long-banned political comedy is set in a scrap metal yard where political dissidents are interned for 're-education'. A powerful commentary on totalitarianism and a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.
