One of the earliest (and eeriest) works by the legendary filmmaker F. W. Murnau Schloss Vogeld: Die Enthllung eines Geheimnisses [Castle Vogeld: The Revelation of a Secret often referred to as The Haunted Castle] provides a vital glimpse into the development of the uncanny-suffused expressionistic style that became Murnau's hallmark and legacy. A party of aristocrats assemble at a country manor for an autumn hunt. But a long-lingering question threatens once more to rear its head: who really murdered the Baroness's late husband? With a riveting nightmare sequence that foreshadows the nocturnal fantasias of both Nosferatu and Phantom and a masquerade conceit that looks backward to Feuillade and forward to Murnau's own Die Finanzen des Groherzogs this languorous mood piece represents the latent material that will figure into a master director's later breakthroughs.

A true high point in 70s Italian thriller cinema this inspired remake of Hitchcocks Strangers on a Train from director Maurizio Lucidi is able to push the concept of the original movie into something far more unbearably tense and deliciously twisted. Stefano (Thomas Milian; Traffic Amistad JFK) needs to sort out his troublesome wife who is seriously cramping his future plans. A chance meeting with a wealthy Count Matteo (Pierre Clemente) leads to an extraordinary plan where both will do each other a murderous favour to free them from the people who ail them. The problem is Stefano treats this as a joke whilst Matteo is deadly serious and what he does drives Stefano to the edge of sanity in a gripping race against time! Shot in a mist-wreathed eerily beautiful Venice this near dream-like melding of thriller with baroque giallo overtones has remained until now a criminally hidden psychological gem.

Presented from a brand new 4K restoration of the film from original materials, Second Run presents the debut feature film of the late, great Czech filmmaker Milos Forman. Black Peter is a wonderfully wry and provocative comedy about a young man growing up in a 1960s Czech provincial town. Taking the Best Film prize at the 1964 Locarno Film Festival, this early masterpiece of the emerging Czech New Wave brought to the screen something that Czechoslovak filmgoers weren t used to an authentic testimony about the lives of young people. Forman went on to become the most successful of all his Czech contemporaries, moving to America where he had huge international hits with films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest and Amadeus works that won him Best Director Academy Awards in 1976 and 1985 respectively. Forman made many important American films, but stayed true to his Czech roots. Black Peter, along with his other early works (which include his classic 1965 film A Blonde in Love), perfectly capture the authenticity and atmosphere of life in the eastern bloc during the early 60s, and the feelings of Czech teenagers in youthful rebellion on the cusp of the Prague Spring.
