With powerful conviction, Nikolaus Lehnoff interprets Wagner's Lohengrin as the dramatic struggle of masculine and feminine, revenge and compassion. Powerfully acted, almost like a Strindberg play, and musically of the highest order, this Lohengrin from the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden will be a benchmark production for decades. With his extraordinarily transparent interpretation of the title role, Klaus Florian Vogt leads an inspired cast to visionary realms that are rarely touched, let alone captured on High Definition film and in pure surround sound. The monumental sets by Stephan Braunfels and Kent Nagano's sublimely well-balanced musical interpretation complete a deeply moving total-theatre experience.

  • The Escapees [DVD]The Escapees | DVD | (09/02/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

The escapees is aside from Rollin's adult title La Comtesse Ixe one of Rollin's most obscure and rare films having only ever been released on video in Canada and Turkey in miniscule numbers. This release marks both its DVD debut and the first time that it is being seen in its correct state as the master for this release was created from the original negative and supervised throughout its creation by Rollin himself. The film is at times brilliant and at others maddeningly frustrating as Rollin's story of two wayward girls on the run from an institution wanders from the fantastic to the farcical and back again. Written by Rollin and Jacques Ralf an associate brought in by the financiers The Escapees contains all the magic and fairytale qualities of films like Fascination and Requiem For A Vampire but somehow never quite reaches their brilliance. That said The Escapees has everything one expects from a Rollin film including two beautiful young women scenes of death burlesque shows in a junkyard and Brigitte Lahaie!

Marczewski's anti-totalitarian satire is a darkly comic examination of censorship. Adapting the premise of Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo to late 1980s Poland, the film centres on a provincial film censor who is horrified to discover that the actors in a trite romantic weepie are refusing to perform their roles. Directed by one of Poland's leading intellectual - and much censored - filmmakers, this multi-awardwinning feature is a key film of the seismic political changes of 1989, and an enthusiastic manifesto for the freedom of the artist - and ultimately, of all humanity.
