  • Madness - At Madstock [1998]Madness - At Madstock | DVD | (10/02/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Madness at Madstock is a no-frills, nothing-fancy record of the band's 1998 open-air concert in London's Finsbury Park, which was attended by 75,000 people. Madness brought to Two-Tone an ebullient laddish sound that owed much to the suburban hi-jinks of the Kinks in their heyday, as well as a cheeky brassiness that was not just a matter of a good horn section. This concert celebrates both the band's reunion after a long split and the sheer good spirits that went with the occasion--the band dance, the audience dance and everyone jumps up and down, because that's what you do when Madness play. After a brief introduction with some home-movie touches like a trip to the tailor, we are treated to a selection of Madness standards including "House of Fun", "Night Boat to Cairo" and "Baggy Trousers", as well as slightly odder items such as a version of some key themes from Swan Lake! --Roz Kaveney

  • Jazz - A Film By Ken Burns [2000]Jazz - A Film By Ken Burns | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £79.99

The BBC, sceptical about the British appetite for extended documentary programmes, edited Ken Burns' epic 17-hour history Jazz back to around 12 hours. That's what's presented in this box set of the series, and while the flow of the original is preserved, so are its idiosyncrasies. The film dwells at length on early jazz, particularly on its origins in New Orleans, and there's a good deal of absorbing history here. On the other hand, in suggesting that the important work of jazz was done by 1975, Burns gives us cause to question how much of his earlier research is awry too. There isn't much here to reflect the brimming vitality of post-1960s jazz, and many listeners and musicians have been enraged by Burns' neglect of such pivotal figures as Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker--all players whose work responds vigorously to the question that Burns thinks nobody can answer: "Where are the modern equivalents of Armstrong, Ellington, Parker and Coltrane?" Armstrong and Ellington are the touchstones of Burns' film, providing the narrative thread around which the stories of other major figures turn, among them Bechet, Basie, Goodman, Parker, Miles Davis and Coltrane. Burns also finds populist mileage in the politicisation of jazz, making dramatic capital out of racial divides that most jazz players, black and white, have ignored. The fact is that almost all jazz players, regardless of race, have felt like outsiders. Despite such distractions, Jazz is the longest jazz documentary yet produced, and it's rich in musical examples and classic, rare and unseen footage. Even when working with simple stills, Burns uses seductive camera work and Keith David's epigrammatic narration to maximum effect. There's plenty to enjoy here, but viewers should be aware, as Joshua Redman points out in Musicians' Views in our Ken Burns' Jazz shop, that Burns' film is an often compelling perspective on jazz, not a definitive study. --Mark Gilbert

INXS fans will rejoice at Live Baby Live, a buoyant concert film shot during an ecstatic performance before 72,000 hopping fans in Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1991. The Australian band's vocalist, the late Michael Hutchence, is at his feral-romantic best, stalking and swivelling his way through an energised set of welterweight pop. The show starts with a big, boomy "Guns in the Sky", takes a turn toward unexpected soulfulness with "New Sensation", and spreads the wealth with a sharp set of ballads and rockers. Hutchence has fun with a naughty "Know the Difference", plays around with a Jagger-esque take on confessional soul in "The Loved One" and milks "Never Tear Us Apart" for all it's worth. The band sounds more muscular than they did in the studio, hard-charging and rough on "Suicide Blonde", drunk on a jazzy guitar hook in "Need You Tonight", and completely danceable on "Bitter Tears." --Tom Keogh

  • Tell Me What Rockers to SwallowTell Me What Rockers to Swallow | DVD | (25/10/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.99

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' first DVD, Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow, comes after the release of just one album, one EP and a bucketload of hype. The focus here is the full live concert recorded at San Francisco's Fillmore, which showcases the band at their best and singer Karen O in full-on charismatic exuberance--she's a natural performer and a rock star through and through. But with only so many songs in their repertoire, they do tend to draw things out a bit between tracks. When she takes the time during the intro of "Miles Away" to eat a bunch of grapes on stage, it all seems a bit Yoko (surely not the type of art that needs to be in artrock). Still, mild pretensions aside, they do put on a heck of an entertaining show. Bonus features include the videos for "Y-Control" (eerily directed by Spike Jonze), "Pin", "Date with the Night" and "Maps", some bonus concert footage and some wholly unnecessary backstage footage. As a full package, Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow works well and whets the appetite for the second album. --Robert Burrow
