Considering their reputation for hating interviews and photo sessions, Belle & Sebastian's Fans Only is a surprisingly intimate affair. Over 136 minutes, the main feature documentary follows Belle & Sebastian from their inception in 1996 through every step of their six-album career, tracking the band to America, Brazil, and Japan, and hanging out with them in their hometown of Glasgow. At times, Fans Only feels like a lovingly crafted home video, with private photos and previously unseen segments of super-8 footage merging with the commercial promos and television appearances. It's all here: childhood snaps, Stuart Murdoch behind the wheel of an orange city bus, a song from the legendary Session At West 54th (still the holy grail for some devotees), a self-made documentary of a band rehearsal from 1999, Richard and Mick's acceptance speech at the Brits (with Richard captioned as Nick Cooke), Stevie and Stuart serenading the queue at the Bowlie Weekender, the band appearing on a Brazilian chat show, it goes on and on. Belle & Sebastian have always been a fans' band, close to those that understand them and inaccessible to those that don't. Fans Only is that relationship caught brilliantly on video. On the DVD: Fans Only on disc also includes live versions of "Dog on Wheels", "Landslide" and "The Kids are Alright" from The Bowlie Weekender. There are questions from the band's press conference for Fold Your Hands, You Walk Like a Peasant, plus Stevie singing "Darlin'" at Coachella, a 60s' version of "Jonathan David" and a Discography. --Ian Watson

The long-defunct, Southern Californian band regrouped for an album, an expensive tour (expensive for ticket buyers, that is) and this televised special, which features the Eagles in performance. Laid-back but sharp and even stirring during a longish acoustic set, the guys quickly get past the nostalgia element and sound truly viable. They even make it look easy: the sight of Joe Walsh wearing glasses and sitting in almost perfect repose as he effortlessly colours old hits "Tequila Sunrise" and new material such as "Learn to Be Still" may make you wonder why you ever stashed that guitar in the attic. The band eventually gets off their stools and rocks out on "Hotel California" and other Eagles standards. All in all, it's an enjoyable and mellowing show. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
The classic line-up of Deep Purple, like that of Yes, was always much more than the sum of its parts, so Perihelion, a near-as-damn-it reunion gig, has more going for it than cynics might contend. We get Ian Gillan (now shorn of his shoulder-length locks--no more cries of "Gillian!"--and looking remarkably like Robert Palmer), Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, with Ritchie Blackmore's guitar duties now handled by Steve Morse. The band takes a couple of numbers to warm up, with Gillan's voice in particular taking a while to shake itself down and Morse tending to fumble and overplay in the first instance, but this soon passes and we're off on a trip through the best of the Purple catalogue. Tracks include "Woman from Tokyo" and a superb rendering of "Lazy", dedicated to the late Tony Ashton and introduced by a scorching Hammond solo from Jon Lord that quotes nicely from Ashton, Gardner & Dyke's r 'n' b (in the old sense) classic "Resurrection Shuffle". Other highlights include the obligatory "Smoke on the Water", the obligatory drum solo (neither too long nor too silly), and Gillan doing a few of his legendary vocalised guitar impressions. Listen out also for "No-one Came", "Fools" (one section of which is as close as Purple ever came to playing jazz) and the wonderful "Hey Cisco", dedicated to the long-retired actor who played the Lone Ranger in the classic TV series but was forbidden by the studio from earning the odd $200 to supplement his pension by opening supermarkets in costume. As Gillan explains, the band couldn't find a rhyme for "Lone Ranger"! --Roger Thomas

Recorded live at the Jazz Open in Stuttgart in 1994, The Band from Utopia benefits from musicians fleet-fingered enough to replicate the late Frank Zappas intricate amalgams of jazz, rock, classical and r&b. Zappa, who died in 1992, was a prodigious musical talent and one of the few people to build musical bridges between rock and the more "serious" works of Stravinsky and Varese. If theres a weakness in his music, however, its that instead of soul it has only a pervasively sarcastic quality. Zappa's mirthless humour is in evidence here: architecturally breathtaking music and musicianship is sabotaged by titles like "The Illinois Enima (sic) Bandit", while the wistfully gorgeous backdrop of "Outside Now" is disfigured by an embittered, satirical stream-of-consciousness lyric. This project does work, however, not least because of the cheerful tone set by vocalist/guitarist Ike Willis, who invests in the music humane qualities lacking in Zappa. He savours some of Zappas more acrid verse, as in "Bamboozled By Love", while relishing its ploughing, killer blues riff. The rest of the band, meanwhile, set about their task of restoring old Zappa classics like 1968s "Uncle Meat" with an infectiously good-natured enthusiasm. Playing with Zappa, a notorious disciplinarian, was probably never this much fun. The Stuttgart audience look as if theyve wandered in from Songs of Praise and the Band From Utopia have the Dress Sense From Hell, but overall this is a musica! l celebration worth celebrating. On the DVD: The Band from Utopia disc has no extra features. The digital soundtrack is immaculate, though, and the video aspect ratio 4.3. --David Stubbs
