Let's face it: Will and Gareth were always going to be the main draw on the Pop Idol 2002 Tour), the live show that took the kids out of the studio and onto the road. After the drawn-out finale of the TV show, the ones who didn't make it got to strut their stuff in front of thousands of teenage girls all screaming for Will and Gareth. It's a glitzy show, undoubtedly, but there is little here that bears repeat viewing, since we saw the wannabes do this every Saturday night for what felt like a century. Given that, thus far, not one of the other so-called "stars" (after Mr Gates, Mr Danesh and Mr Young) have even troubled the Top 40, this tour seems like 14 minutes more fame than most of them deserved. One for the fans only. On the DVD: Pop Idol 2002 Tour is presented in 16:9 anamorphic and Dolby 5.1, so it looks and sounds great, but the standard behind-the-scenes feature and split-screen options are dull and hardly provide much of an insight. --Jonathan Weir

Although Rick Wakeman has recorded an enormous number of solo projects, this multi-region DVD-plus-CD set Rick Wakeman 2000--Live in Concert must surely be the best in terms of sheer value, quite apart from the fact that the performance is very good. Even long after the glory days of Yes and his grandiose solo albums of the 1970s Wakeman, the inventor of rock keyboards (before him there were pianists and organists, while after him there were programmers), remains a consummate performer. Taken from one of his one-man shows, in which he mixes musical items from his entire career with some expertly delivered anecdotes, there's something in this bumper parcel to please every fan. The dozen tracks on the DVD include extracts from his solo albums Henry, Arthur, Journey, some Yes music, the brilliant (and hilarious) "Nursery Rhyme Concerto" and much more, while his story about the theatre organ in Seattle is alone worth the price of the set. The extra audio CD features all the music on the show, while the DVD itself has six extra audio-only tracks plus a very funny biography and a photo gallery. --Roger Thomas
As a performer, Sarah Brightman has never sought the comfort of the pigeonhole. In a career now well into its third decade, she's danced with Hot Gossip, been a teenage pop star, developed into a seasoned West End and Broadway musical star, and extended the range of her pure, classically trained soprano voice for the opera stage and concert platform. British critics, unable to pin down an obvious but diverse talent tend to dismiss her as the flaky ex-wife of Andrew Lloyd Webber and leave it at that. But as this 1999 South African concert shows, she's a megastar beyond her own homeland. Brightman is a guileless artist with eclectic tastes, from Queen to Puccini and Morricone. She remains loyal to her former husband's work and is at her best in the numbers from Phantom of the Opera. In other hands some stuff could be overripe: an Italian version of "My Heart Will Go On", and the ubiquitous "Nessun Dorma", for example. But her sincerity and soaring voice carry it all off. And Brightman proves herself a thoroughbred live singer, knocking today's manufactured pop babes into a cocked hat. The programme also includes an interview with the singer. --Piers Ford
Shirley Bassey is show business royalty and Divas Are Forever is an inspired attempt to create a documentary around a concert given during the Diamond Awards Festival in Belgium. The setting is perfect, with the Dame rising supremely above the innate vulgarity of the event. You can cut straight to the songs if you want, and you won't be disappointed: all her hits are here, from "Goldfinger" to "Big Spender". The voice is clearly one of the great instruments of popular music. She seems to regret being pigeonholed as "Bassey the belter", but her vocal chords weren't built for small rooms or smoky nightclubs. Each number is a high-octane emotional set piece in which she always stops just short of travestying her own inimitable style. The real interest, though, lies in the glimpses of the star's life on the road. There are some splendidly sticky moments that leave her flunkies dodging the barbs. The tantrum she throws during the video shoot with the Propellerheads for "History Repeating" is a gem. And the negotiations for her to be presented with a jewel as the "surprise" climax to her concert leave you with no doubt that this diva knows her own worth. --Piers Ford
Three Bears is made up of promo clips and live clips shot at various venues around the UK - the Carleton Club Morecambe Fulham Greyhound Goldwyn's Suite in Birmingham and the infamous 'impromptu' gig from the back of a wagon on the promenade in Blackpool. Essentially a 'best of' collection from 1985-88 Three Bears features various line-ups backing permanent fixture Muttley. The Manchester Gallery gig was shot two days after Christmas in 1985 just after the release of their debut LP - who could have predicted what came next. All in all this DVD documents the Macc Lads rise to fame as the most disgusting nastiest ugliest sexist rudest crudest lewdest drunkest band in the world. Get the beers in!
