The musical world of Tangerine Dream is in principle a surrealistic reality. Those who find such descriptions paradoxical are confronted with the band's strange and bizarre landscapes of sounds and musical visions. While stepping into their exotic musical garden one can experience the way in which individually preconceived ideas about music are taken to new horizons. The very force of TD's music finds its visionary counterpoint in all the pictures animation anachronistic and futuristic images of this video. Edgar Froese's intention while shooting and compiling the video was to communicate a production of musical dreams and picturesque visions to the TD audience and not simply add another collection of industrially manufactured commercial clips to the market. Within this synopsis of various titles from their newer productions of the Nineties you will travel from outer space to inner space through impressive and sometimes humorous decades of human illusions through the broken ideas and bots of our glossy junkyard life - and you will see the band in its present line-up of various locations. It's fun and it shows yet another side of the European music legend founded by Edgar Froese. This disc includes: Bride In Cold Tears Catwalk Jungle Journey Change Of The Gods Rough Embrace Little Blonde In The Park Of Attractions San Rocco and Firetongues.
This film takes a detailed look at one of Britain's greatest singers Alma Coogan. Featuring archive material interviews with those who were close to Alma and expert analysis from those in the business this is a definitive account of a true British music legend.
In 2000, Gloria Estefan celebrated her return to her Cuban roots with Que Siga la Tradicion, drawing on songs from three hugely successful albums: Mi Tierra, Abriendo Puertas and Alma Caribena. At a time when Latin music has become a global force, Estefan has triumphed as the commercial prima donna of the genre. When she emerged in the mid-1980s as one of the first stars of the MTV age, pumping out catchy dance hits at the head of Miami Sound Machine, there was little sense of her own musical origins beyond a kind of all-purpose pulsating Latin rhythm. Here, that balance is redressed with a polished collection of boleros and balatas which vibrate with intensity and energy and are clearly heartfelt, not least "Por un Beso", which she describes as a powerful Latin torch song. At times she genuinely evokes the memory of that Latin superstar from another age Carmen Miranda, although there are no bananas in sight. If it all seems a little air-brushed--Estefan is no Omara Portuondo and these cosmetically enhanced dance routines are light years from the simple dignity of the Buena Vista Social Club--she can still take credit for being a major force in the Latin music revival. Her voice, too, has become a little darker and more interesting, serving her material well. On the DVD: The sleeve claims bonus documentary and interview material, although this really boils down to snatches of footage from the video shoot, a brief rehearsal scene with Celine Dion and a Millennium Eve concert. Some of it is too slushy for words: "From my soul to yours...". The biography, a written interview with Gloria, does shed useful light on her approach to Latin music, and for the die-hard fans there is also a discography and photo gallery. The 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack provides the kind of sound quality expected by the MTV generation, with picture quality to match. Gloria has never looked better. --Piers Ford
The ska-punk wave is starting to make its comeback but the originators of the movement never went away. Reel Big Fish put the Orange County ska-punk movement of the 90's into the limelight and 10 years later they're still packing venues with die-hard fans. This DVD highlights the band in their hometown setting. With an unheard of performance length of close to two hours this DVD will surely be a must-have in any music DVD collection.
