Thelonius Monk: Live In '66
The brilliant career of multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter and humanitarian Harry Chapin is chronicled from the success of his debut album that stayed in the charts for six months driven by the strength of the top twenty hit ""Taxi"". His 1973 album ""Short Stories"" yielded another international hit with ""W.O.L.D."" and his 1974 album ""Balderdash"" went gold on the strength of the #1 hit ""Cats in the Cradle"". Long before the world had heard of Band Aid Chapin worked tirelessly to
The new queen of the Portuguese folk music known as fado shines in the impressive Mariza Live in London, a 2003 concert recorded at the Union Chapel in London. The twentysomething Lisbon resident has been hailed as the successor to fado legend Amália Rodrigues; now, after two well-received CDs, comes Mariza's first filmed concert performance, and it is stunning. No wonder fado has been compared to the blues: the actual musical content is different, but in terms of both origin (both come from a variety of cultures, in this case including strains of Spanish, Brazilian, and African sounds) and lyrical bent (with its constant element of saudade, roughly translated as yearning or longing, fado, like blues, is mournful, soulful music), it's every bit as deep. Mariza is backed primarily by acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar, and "Portuguese guitar," a 12-string instrument that looks something like a lute and sounds a bit like a Greek bouzouki; there is some piano as well, and Guy Barker's muted trumpet provides "O Deserto" with a pronounced jazzy feel. But the singer is the main attraction here, and the power and passion of Mariza's delivery on "Barco Negro" and nearly all the others in the 16-song set, including more upbeat, celebratory numbers like "Oica La o Senhor Vinho" (the introductions are in English, but the tunes are all in Portuguese) are undeniable. Add to that Mariza's black cloak and clothing, her stylish, peroxide-blonde perm, and her highly theatrical movements and expressions, along with the darkened chapel and superb lighting, and you've got an audio-visual experience so dramatic and moving that it easily renders the language barrier irrelevant. --Sam Graham

Primal Scream’s seminal album “Screamadelica” defined a generation. It’s mix of rock, dance, dub, gospel and more caught the zeitgeist of the early nineties to perfection and it went on to win the inaugural Mercury Music Prize in 1992 and consistently be named as “Best Album Of The Nineties” and appear in numerous “All Time Best Albums” lists. This show, filmed on November 26th 2010 at London’s Olympia, was the first time that Primal Scream had performed the whole album live and it became one of the “must see” gigs of the year. The band was accompanied by a brass section and a gospel choir with back projections specially created for the event. The result was a stunning musical and visual triumph and proved, if it needed to be, that Screamadelica is one of the finest albums ever made and that Primal Scream are one of the truly great live bands.

There's no sound quite like the rich rumbling bass notes and driving treble chords of traditional gospel piano. A good church pianist in the sanctified or holiness tradition can get a congregation singing swaying and clapping along in a jubilant expression of spirit and faith. This inspirational course is perfect for novice and intermediate players who want to learn to play familiar spirituals and hymns in traditional gospel style. Includes music booklet.

There have been many durable family groups in popular music over the years, but it'd be hard to name one that has lasted longer and succeeded as consistently as the trio featured in This Is Where I Came In. The Bee Gees, Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, were making TV and radio appearances in Australia as early as 1960 before returning to their native England and joining the Beatles-led British invasion of America. And they're still at it more than 40 years later. All of that is duly chronicled in this two-hour documentary (produced in 2000), along with a great deal more: the personal problems that led to a break-up in the early-1970s; the unparalleled success of the Saturday Night Fever era; their occasional missteps and failures (eg: the abominable Sgt. Pepper film); the rise and tragic fall of brother Andy; the respect their success finally earned them in the 90s; and so on. The format is pretty standard, as interviews, photos, home movies and concert footage all contribute to a straight chronological telling of the Bee Gees' tale. But no stone is left unturned, and the Gibb Brothers (not to mention everyone else who's interviewed) have plenty to say. Best of all, there's lots of the Bee Gees' music, including a video of the title track of the 2001 album after which the film is named. In the end, we're left with the impression the Bee Gees would probably want us to have: that these guys have written, recorded, produced and performed literally hundreds of great songs. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com

Fans of Latino gusset-dampener Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy One Night Only other than knowing it exists, so its commendable to see that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums its clear that Martins voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, hes beautiful, hes great fun, hes not short on stage presence and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine (one of the brief reportage snippets scattered throughout this release shows him playing with a samba band--and getting it right, too). Theres a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samsons pillars. Once this frisson passes its good times all the way, with the inevitable "Vida Loca" and "La Copa De La Vida" as highlights. There are guest spots from Carlos Santana and Jose Feliciano. On the DVD: One Night Only comes with a 4:3 ratio picture and includes an excellent video of the already excellent "Shake Your Bon-Bon", plus a gallery of still photos. --Roger Thomas
