  The short films included in this compilation are known as Soundies. These musical films were shown in a jukebox machine called a Panoram. Over 2000 of these films were made between 1941 and 1947. The Big Bands Volume One is a sampling of the numerous bands who performed in front of the Soundies cameras. This edition includes many of the hits of the 1940's performed by some of the biggest stars of the era. Initially, Soundies were extremely popular but due to a shortage of production materials during the war the Panorams were in short supply, ultimately causing the demise of the Soundie in 1947. Nevertheless, Soundies captured on film many superb musicians at the peak of their powers, making an irreplaceable contribution to the history of American music. Using the best possible sources, Storyville Films has painstakingly located and restored the Soundies in this program to the best possible condition. In some cases the available prints were not up to our usual excellent standards. We have chosen to include those films because of their historic value.

  Angra is one of the most popular melodic bands from Brazil and are known for their highly technical instrumental playing. It's a band which managed to establish itself as one of metal scene's heavy names in the world. Their debut album 'Angels Cry' (1993) shot the band to success achieving gold status in their home country as well as in Japan. During their 22 year long career the band has already opened for AC/DC and shared the stage with bands like KISS Black Sabbath and Slayer in addition to their sold out headlining shows all over the world. With a special concert in their hometown Sao Paulo and an incredible live show Angra celebrated the 20th anniversary of their 1993 debut album 'Angels Cry' on August 25th 2013. Joined by Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire Vision Divine ex Kamelot) on vocals the Brazilian melodic metal band performed their debut almost in its entirety adding on top a couple of fan favourites as well as songs from their most recent recordings for a over 20 songs containing setlist. The show is truly a night to remember and was made even more unique when very special guests entered the stage: Tarja (ex-Nightwish) a true metal diva lends her talent and angelic voice on 'Stand Away' and Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights'. On the latter the legendary Uli Jon Roth (ex-Scorpions) is also featured and proves once again why he is such a reference for the majority of guitar players around the world. Furthermore the Brazilian string quartet Familia Lima shares the stage on three songs and drummer Amilcar Christopharo from the band Torture Squad grabs the sticks on 'Evil Warning' representing the metal bands from Brazil. As guitar player Rafael Bittencourt puts it 'For those who think we should quit I tell you: we're just getting started.' That pretty much summons up the very apparent joy that the band showed on stage.   Coldplay are on peak form in Live 2003, riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during a year-long world tour and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet; not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of both genders. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2 and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight", "Yellow", the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses", and the popular hits "In My Place", "Clocks", and "The Scientist". And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff Shannon

  Return To Forever were at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the seventies and like their contemporaries Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards Stanley Clarke on bass Al Di Meola on guitar and Lenny White on drums. In 2008 this classic line-up reunited for their first tour in 25 years and proved that their musicianship and the chemistry within the band were as strong as ever.
