  • Joni Mitchell - Painting With Words And Music [1998]Joni Mitchell - Painting With Words And Music | DVD | (06/12/1999) from £11.98   |  Saving you £-2.99 (-33.30%)   |  RRP £8.99

After more than a decade of de facto exile from the mainstream, Joni Mitchell has regained much of her media profile, if not her commercial impact, thanks to deserved if belated accolades from critics and music business peers. Recent Grammy Awards and a special Billboard citation epitomise the ironies of Mitchell's 1980s obscurity: because she reached her highest profile with the broad success in 1974 of Court and Spark, which remains Mitchell's lushest, most accessible album, the Canadian musician and painter has found herself comparatively ignored in later years simply because her work ventured into more eclectic amalgams of her already diverse influences. Yet in her forays into world music, jazz and pop collage, Mitchell has remained a prescient and influential artist. This 1998 concert special sheds welcome light on the work from that post-Spark quarter-century, its 22 songs dominated by the confessional works that have remained Mitchell's strong suit. Early favourites like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Just Like This Train" retain their charm, but it's Mitchell's more mature pieces such as "Amelia" (from Hejira) and "Sex Kills" (from Turbulent Indigo) that convey the depth and acuity of her work. A superb band--including Brian Blade, Mark Isham, Larry Klein, and Greg Leisz--provides a sinewy, sympathetic framework well suited to the palette of jazz, folk, and pop colours that Mitchell daubs on her songs. Adding further intimacy to the performance is a circular stage design, a small audience and a welcome lack of "big" production effects; instead, Mitchell indulges her second career as a painter through a pre-show stroll around a gallery of her visual works.Mitchell's frail health in the late 1990s, as well as a lifetime of cigarettes, has taken a toll on her voice, which has lost much of its upper register. Yet there is also an added richness to her lower range befitting this sharp-eyed survivor's art. Old fans will also recognise the flurries of girlish laughter in between-songs patter, while savouring how Mitchell's powers as a writer and player (especially on a new, striking electric guitar) have matured as well. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

  • Tom Jones - Sincerely YoursTom Jones - Sincerely Yours | DVD | (29/04/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.99

Tom "The Voice" Jones has always been as much interested in his stage look as his vocals, as Sincerely Yours reminds us. The venue and the year are not specified, but this could be any of a thousand Las Vegas gigs from the 1970s, captured to perfection. With a playlist of 20 hot tunes (both his own and others), it's an hour of terrific sing-along entertainment. From "What's New Pussycat" to "Let Your Love Flow", the high notes and sweaty brow stay consistent. The obvious crowd-pleasers are: "Delilah", "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Pretty Woman", "Spanish Eyes", "If You Think I'm Sexy", "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again", "I Did It My Way" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". The format of the performance is intriguingly edited, too. He sings a couple of numbers, then changes jacket so he can throw it into the cheering audience! On the DVD: Sincerely Yours comes with added value in the shape of a half-hour CD of Jones' own favourite duets (before Reload). The 12 tracks include Dusty Springfield ("Upside Down"), Tina Turner ("Hot Legs"), Isaac Hayes ("I Love You So") and Donny Osmond ("The Way She Walks"). The only extras are a Biography and Discography, which stops at 1988. Although from old video stock, the picture is good enough. The sound is more important of course, and this comes out far better. --Paul Tonks

The Doors Are Open (Roundhouse London July 9th 1968): As the Vietnam War raged and the world responded with political turbulence The Doors played the Roundhouse in London. Captured here are dramatic performances of songs that convey the band's strong political messages about the war such as a powerfully effecting rendition of 'Unknown Soldier'. 'The Doors Are Open' is an intimate portrait of one of The Doors' unique live shows in England. The Stones In The Park (Hyde Park London July 5th 1969): The Rolling Stones were scheduled to play at a free concert in London's Hyde Park two days after Brian Jones's death; they decided to proceed with the show as a tribute to him performed in front of an estimated 250 000 fans. This historic performance included the concert debut of 'Honky Tonk Woman' which the band had just released as a single. Their stage manager Sam Cutler introduced them as 'the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world' - a description he repeated throughout their 1969 US tour and which has stuck to this day.

  • Capercaillie - The Capercaillie Collection - 1990-1996 [2000]Capercaillie - The Capercaillie Collection - 1990-1996 | DVD | (29/05/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Capercaillie Collection opens with five videos, and follows them with 15 live tracks from 1992 concerts at the Capital Theatre in Aberdeen and the Nairn Harbourfest. This concert material from Scotland's most successful Celtic folk-rockers was originally issued on VHS as Two Nights of Delirium. Of the videos, "Breisleach" opens the set with gentle atmospherics, leading into the hit singles "Coisch a Ruin" and "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn". "Miracle of Being" is a detour into AOR, while the final video "Ailein Duinn" is from the film Rob Roy. The concert footage is less polished, more vibrant and rousing. The hits are repeated, while 13 other tracks enthusiastically mix Clannad-style synthesisers and Celtic mist with Scottish folk updated to include some funky bouzouki playing. Topped by Karen Matheson's beautiful vocals, this is must for fans, and thoroughly entertaining for all bar die-hard folk traditionalists. On the DVD: The box lists Dolby Digital, though given the source material it is hardly surprising that this is in perfectly good, though hardly spectacular stereo. The concert is 4:3 full-screen, while the videos are at about 1.66:1. Minor grain is noticeable but colours are strong and the images reasonably sharp. The band biography and discography are useful, though the photo gallery could be much more extensive. Unusually, the disc is coded for regions 2 to 6. --Gary S. Dalkin
