Features a compilation of live performances by the King Of Rock'n'Roll.
A fascinating though often unintentionally hilarious miscellany of guitar-based music from the late 1960s to the early 80s, Let It Rock consists of performances--most live, some mimed--lifted apparently randomly from the archives of German TV. The common factor throughout seems to be a predilection for excessive facial hair (Joan Jett and Heart excepted). Otherwise the selection is entirely haphazard: the ordering is certainly not chronological, as neither the programme nor the minimal booklet notes mention broadcast dates of any kind. This is a shame, because there are some genuinely rare performances here: Yes playing "Yours Is No Disgrace" live in the studio (spoiled by silly psychedelic effects) and the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove", for example, as well as little-known tracks from Spooky Tooth ("That Was Only Yesterday"), The Grease Band ("Wild Side of Life"), Stone the Crows ("Danger Zone") and Man ("Daughter of the Fireplace"). Elsewhere, more silly camera effects detract from Free's "All Right Now" and Deep Purple's vintage "Highway Star" (the latter mimed, not live), among others. There is much that raises a chuckle, too: mad flautists in Family's "The Weaver's Answer" and (naturally) Jethro Tull's "The Witches Promise" (great song, silly video), the off-Broadway camp of Meatloaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" and the extraordinarily shambolic Ginger Baker's Air Force. On the DVD: Let It Rock may lack any kind of documentation or context for the music, but at least the sound is excellently remixed Dolby 5.1 or DTS. --Mark Walker

Drama excitement and sheer musical satisfaction are unleashed on this exhilarating performance by rock giants Yes. Original members Jon Anderson Steve Howe Chris Squire and Alan White are teamed with a superb orchestra for such classic Yes songs as 'Close To The Edge' 'Starship Trooper' and 'Roundabout'. They are among the highlights of an outstanding concert part of the unique Yes Symphonic tour of 2001. It was a long held dream that Yes would one-day tour with an orchestra. Their carefully crafted arrangements and melodic themes lend themselves to the full glory of a symphonic treatment. Crashing finales and wild extemporisation are all part of the 30 year Yes musical story - typified by such epics as 'Gates Of Delirium'. The rich variety of Yes music is complemented by the young and dynamic European Festival Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Keitel. They play with all the enthusiasm of rock musicians during a two and a half hour show recorded live in Amsterdam. The programme includes some of the bands most memorable themes notably 'Long Distance Runaround' 'And You and I' and I've Seen All Good People'. There are also solo spots for guitar virtuoso Steve Howe and stirring versions of the band's greatest hits - 'Roundabout' and 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'. Watch out for a shattering version of 'Starship Trooper' in which group and orchestra lock into mind-boggling groove. Tracks Include: Close To The Edge / Long Distance Runaround / Don't Go / Deeper / Gates Of Delirium / Starship Trooper / I've Seen Good People. Symphonic Live CD Tracklist: Overture Close to the Edge orchestral intro Long Distance Runaround Don't Go Starship Trooper And You and I I've Seen All Good People Owner of a Lonely Heart Roundabout

This second volume of BIg Band Soundies includes some of the finest musicians and band leaders of the Big Band era. These musical films were originally shown in a jukebox machine called a Panoram. Over two thousand of these films were made between 1941 and 1947 featuring many of the most popular recording artists of the day. Soundies were extremely popular, but due to a shortage of production materials during the war, the Panorams themselves were in short supply. The shortage of Panorams ultimately spelled the demise of the soundie in 1947. Nevertheless, they captured on film many superb musicians at the peak of their powers making an irreplaceable contribution to the history of American music during this period.
Multi-Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald has had a hugely successful career over four decades with firstly Steely Dan then with the Doobie Brothers and finally as a solo artist. It is difficult to know who this compilation of nominees for the 2002 BRIT Awards is aimed at. It is implausible that anybody will like everything here, and it is unbelievable that anyone possessed of rudimentary critical faculties will like more than three or four of the artists whose videos feature in this collection. Given the perennial determination of the BRITs to celebrate all that is mediocre, and the fact that 2001 was less than a vintage year by any standards, "BRIT Awards 2002" is mostly rather dismal viewing. There are a few heartening moments: Kylie Minogue releasing a decent single ("Can't Get You out of My Head") is testament more to the law of averages than her musical abilities, but the video is a small masterpiece of choreography and computer imaging. Destiny's Child and Dido also owe particular thanks to their directors, though it might reasonably be argued that the bulldozer that eventually destroys the house in which Dido simpers along to "Thank You" arrives about four minutes too late. Probably coincidentally, the best three videos (and the best three songs) are all animated affairs: Daft Punk's "Digital Love", Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" and Radiohead's typically baleful, and beautiful, "Pyramid Song". On the DVD: That individual tracks can be easily selected is a necessity with a compilation of this sort. The "bonus features" are barely worthy of the phrase: extremely desultory biographies of the artists, and links to the official Web sites of the BRITs and Sony. --Andrew Mueller
