  One of the best known Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s The Stylistics were originally made up of Airrion Love Herbert Murrell Russell Thompkins Jr James Dunn and James Smith.   At the time this concert was recorded, Blues Boy King was a mere 75, but the only way his age shows is that he sits down while playing. The notes he wrings from "Lucille", his gold-plated Gibson guitar, are as bittersweet as ever. The set opens with King delivering a gutsy version of the classic, "Let the Good Times Roll", backed by a swinging jazz-blues ensemble of horn section, guitar and drums. King slows down the tempo for "I'll Survive", which he sings with gravel and tears in his voice, the rapt audience responding to every nuance. The master of 12-bar blues, who has influenced a whole generation of musicians (including Eric Clapton with whom he collaborated on the album Riding with the King), is also an ace entertainer. If you can bear to lose the sound for a moment, just watch his facial expressions and gestures: BB is at his best when he has an audience to respond to. Age hasn't tarnished any of his musical skill, either: just listen to the way he bends strings and vibrates notes on "The Thrill Has Gone". Vintage tracks such as "Ain't That Just Like Woman", are mingled with newer, poppier ones such as "Making Love Is Good For You", the title track from his latest album. As this is a live gig, BB chucks in a lot of humour which may not be to the blues purist's taste, but helps make this video a brilliant introduction to the music of a living legend. The end of the video features footage of King talking about how he got started, and how he's still a Mississippi boy. An hour of heaven with the granddaddy of the Blues. -- Lorna Read

  Formed in the latter half of the 1990s British band Gomez started in the minds of lifelong friends Ian Ball and Olly Peacock whose common obsession with music and lack of enthusiasm for the Madchester 'baggie' scene enthused them to move away from the current trends and forge a band with its own significant identity. Bringing on board Ben Ottewell (vocals guitar) Tom Gray (vocals guitar keyboards) and Paul Blackburn (bass guitar) over the following year the new 5-piece developed their unusual three-vocalist style which despite its incongruent workings quickly established the distinctive Gomez sound.   On June 20 2009 80's synth-pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark realised a 30 year dream backed by the rich resonance of a 75 piece orchestra the visual majesty of filmmaker Hambi and the vision of artist Peter Saville.   Bill Bruford was a founding member of Yes through the years 1968-1972 and while with the band recorded five albums each of which was more successful than its predecessor. When Bill left Yes in 1972 for King Crimson following the release of 'Close To The Edge' there were those who concluded that he'd taken leave of his senses. But it proved an astute musical move. When King Crimson's enigmatic leader Robert Fripp decided to split the band after three tumultuous albums and move on to other projects Bill moved to playing countless sessions and was also briefly a member of the bands National Health Gong and more famously Genesis where he played alongside Phil Collins who had just stepped up to the microphone following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Bill was the drummer in the live Genesis situation and was with the band for the majority of 1976 while the band toured their album 'A Trick Of The Tail'. Volume 1 - 2000s is the first in a two volume anthology of concert footage of Bill Bruford's 'Earthworks ' one of the longest lived best travelled and most original jazz quartets. This volume chronicles the band's progress through the 2000s; volume 2 does the same for the 1990s. Filmed on tour in the United States in 2001 Argentina in 2002 and Germany in 2005 this DVD also includes three previously unrecorded tracks and marks the debut performance of bassist Laurence Cottle and pianist Gwilym Simcock with the group.
