Live in Boston, a deluxe three-hour, two-DVD/one-CD package, offers a video view of the entire concert culled from two nights in September 2003. In addition, there is a CD edited from its best audio moments. This is an energetic and ragged but right set from one of the most enduring acts in rock. The quartet version of Fleetwood Mac is stronger than any of its recent incarnations. The interplay and cooperation between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are wonderfully articulated in this show, and there are moments of complete magic. As for the duffers, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, all that can be said is they are one of the great rock rhythm sections in history, and the symbiotic communication between them is evident on video. Musically, the rawer, more immediate sound breathes great life into this old material. Buckingham's guitar is in overdrive most of the evening, and Nicks' voice rises to the challenge of the Mac's louder and prouder arrangements. Highlights on the audio CD include the blowout performance of "Rhiannon," the burning "Big Love," with a great vocal by Buckingham, and of course the finale, "Go Your Own Way." The reliance on tracks like "Dreams," "Landslide," and "Silver Springs" suggests the softer side of the Mac, but on the CD that balance is nearly perfect. On the DVDs, the rockers outnumber the ballads, and that is as it should be. This packaging orgy is hardly new and different, and certainly not revolutionary, but then would fans want it to be? Thoroughly enjoyable. --Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

  • Suede - Lost In TV [2001]Suede - Lost In TV | DVD | (26/11/2001) from £28.10   |  Saving you £-22.11 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Lost In TV is a complete collection of Suede's music videos, arranged in chronological order. It reveals a band that has fallen repeatedly in and out of love with the video medium over the course of four albums. It begins with a low-budget performance clip for their first single, "The Drowners", in which all Suede's members are clearly, and rather endearingly, putting on poses they've been rehearsing and imagining for years. And it ends with "Can't Get Enough", which they couldn't rouse themselves to turn up for, instead allowing the song to soundtrack a short, though undeniably amusing, film about revenge. In between the quality varies with Suede's enthusiasm. Some of the videos here are every bit as awful as the band think, especially the altogether bewildering "Stay Together". Others they should give themselves more credit for "The Wild Ones", for example, retains a haunting quality that was worth any amount of plodding around a freezing Dartmoor. On the DVD: Lost in TV is a comprehensive lesson in how it should be done, exploring all the possibilities of this new technology, rather than taking the usual approach of releasing what is basically a video, adding some desultory, pointless interview footage and charging 10 quid extra for it. Extra features are: a collection of live performances, television appearances and sundry recordings from around the world, among them the version of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" Suede donated to the "War Child" benefit album; a fine new song, "Simon", exclusive to the DVD; a karaoke opportunity featuring the videos with subtitled words but no vocals; and, best of all, the chance to watch all the videos with Suede themselves providing commentary as they go along. Given that Suede seem to regard their videos with much the same horrified embarrassment as viewing an old school photograph, this is richly entertaining, though best avoided by those who prefer their artists to maintain their facades or who are overly sensitive to bad language. Sound options include surround and Dolby Digital. --Andrew Mueller

  • Prince - Live At The Aladdin - Las Vegas [2003]Prince - Live At The Aladdin - Las Vegas | DVD | (25/08/2003) from £12.48   |  Saving you £0.50 (5.27%)   |  RRP £9.99

Prince's galvanising performance Live at the Aladdin demonstrates that he really is one of the great talents of the last quarter-century, a fact easily obscured by the sheer volume and varying quality of his recorded output, not to mention his weird behaviour. The guy has always had a preternatural ability to channel R&B and rock legends such as Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown (compare this performance's amazing "Money Don't Matter 2 Night/The Work"); now he's added more sophisticated flavours to the mix as well, ranging from George Benson to Steely Dan and Weather Report, and all without sacrificing his own voice. Add to that covers of the Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (really), all played by Prince and his smokin', skin-tight band, and what you get is one of the best shows of 2002, or any other year. It's extraordinary. --Sam Graham
