A Butchers 1956 production starring American leads Richard Denning and Carole Mathews. Was the idea to make the film more saleable in the USA? Or to make a British film more American? A bit of both I would think... It’s a story of murder, counterfeit money and international crime with a pinch of Nazis. Our brit Ronald Adam is the bad guy - funny how brits are the bad guys in American films these days!! Ronald Adam featured in 148 productions, his last in 1978, just a year before his death in 1979 . Quite a good little feature, with picture and sound of good quality, after some extensive restoration.

  • Lethal Weapon 4 [1998]Lethal Weapon 4 | DVD | (22/03/1999) from £5.11   |  Saving you £8.88 (173.78%)   |  RRP £13.99

In the fourth and reportedly final film of the Lethal Weapon series, director Richard Donner reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organised crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Rene Russo and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with the Lethal series, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth instalment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flame-thrower, a burning building and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humour is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of the Lethal films, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen. --Jeremy Storey

King Kong comes to Hong Kong in The Mighty Peking Man, a uniquely Shaw Brothers spin on the ageless theme of beauty and the beast. The beast, seven stories high and hailing from the Himalayas, makes his way to the jungles of India in the wake of a violent earthquake. The beauty is Swiss starlet Evelyn Kraft, a sexy blonde Tarzanette who is the Mighty Peking Man s best friend. Both are discovered by Danny Lee, a handsome young explorer who brings the odd couple back to Hong Kong, where Evelyn is almost raped and the monster runs amuck. Instead of the Empire State Building, the special effects laden climax takes place at the Connaught Centre, then Hong Kong s tallest building. Plenty of action, location shooting in India, and an inter-racial romance make this one of Shaw Brothers most unique motion pictures. Variety s verdict: High camp, Chinese style. From the makers of Fonejacker comes a new show for Channel 4...Facejacker. Kayvan Novak once again plays the man of mystery but this time he is up close and personal with his subjects rather than on the other end of a telephone line. He plays a succession of fictional characters thrust into real life situations butting up against unsuspecting members of the public. The show features a mix of some of the characters that we saw in Fonejacker (outspoken car salesman Terry Tibbs and Mr Doovde) and some that we only heard but who have now been brought to life: Brian Badonde - the charlatan art critic who knows very little but who is more than happy to pass off your wisdom as his own whilst presenting his TV show. Dufrais - the Jewish wheelchair-bound fantasist who is obsessed with the minutiae of life and who is desperate to attract a cast for the feature film that he is written; Schindler's Other List Dr. Ali - Saddam Hussein's plastic surgeon of choice. But that was in the 80s. Now he plies his trade in the UK. Donald Donaldson - A British-born former Hollywood director who finds himself back in England auditioning dogs and directing wedding videos but still wanting to give them the Hollywood treatment. A character-based sketch show set in the real world performed by one man in a prosthetic mask and numerous members of the public.
