  • Me, Myself and Irene [2000]

I love this film because I have such empathy for charlie and the way that he interacts with the world. And trust me this comes from someone going through therapy now but this film is just great in the way that it has belly laughs and such sad melancolly that it deserves to be in people collections .

  • Moulin Rouge [2001]
    Kate 05 Feb 2008

This is a visually stunning film that takes your breath away. It stars Nicole Kidman as 'Satine'the 'sparkling diamond' courtesan at the Moulin Rouge, and Ewan McGregor as 'Christian' the poor but 'oh so talented writer' who comes to Paris to discover love. Directed by Baz Luhrmann this is a musical where we are shown another world, or 'underworld' as described by the brilliant Jim Broadbent the owner of the Moulin Rouge. The story involves the leading protagonists falling in love despite Satine's opinion that she cannot fall in love as she is merely a courtesan who's job it is is to make men believe she loves them. In a wonderful scene on top of an elephant(yes, really) in the grounds of the Moulin Rouge Satine and Christian sing a medley of songs incorporating hits by the likes of U2 and David Bowie, we are shown what talented singers they are (Baz made them really sing to each other, no voice doubles here). The spanner in the works lies with the 'Duke' brilliantly played by an unrecognisable Richard Roxburgh, who also falls in love with Satine, and so decides to invest in the nightclub and turn it into an all-singing all-dancing theatre,on the condition that Satine sleeps with him on the opening night of the new show.

For the first time in her life Satine decides she is really in love with Christian and can't fulfil her side of the bargain. Not wishing to give away the storyline things go from bad to worse in unimaginable ways so you need to view this with a box of tissues ready.... think Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, La Boheme.

Moulin Rouge is the perfect film for a dark winters night if you love musicals, romantic movies and sumptuous songs and gorgeous Nicole and Ewan. Craig Armstrong's outstanding orchestrations combined with the wildly original screenplay make this the most highly recommended film. And don't forget to watch out for Kylie!

  • The Commissar [1967]
    Jevon Taylor 04 Feb 2008

Banned for twenty years by the Russian government. A Soviet film about a pregnant female commisar who is billetted with a poor Jewish family during the Civil War, in a town whose citizens are very accustomed to it changing hands, Red, White, Red, etc. This film is clearly very interesting, even fascinating. However, I would not describe it as brilliant or a master peice. Some of the acting is less than great, though some of it - the Jewish father (Rolan Bykov, the "clown" from Andrei Rublev) - is brilliant. The music is unusual and experimental, again at times great, and at others grating. And the camera work and editing are wildly varied. All of this inconsistancy makes for a film that is as formally interesting as its subject matter(s), but also one that at times tries to be too forward thinking and avant garde. Despite this, however, this film is worth watching and watching more than once, probably even more times than a "better" film. Having seen it twice already myself, I would acert that every viewing is likely to be a slightly different experience, equally as varied as the films many vagaries. And I have recommended it to several friends despite its flaws.

  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer [1992]
    Pollyanna Blackwell 02 Feb 2008

This is an okay film but very poor compared to the Tv series. Kristy Swanson is not very believable as Buffy and it is all incredibly cheesy. Donald Sutherland also gives a very poor performance as Merrick. The TV show is far more slick, the cast are so much better and the storylines are a lot more gripping than the film. I'd recommend people renting this film for a laugh just for the cheesiness of it all.

  • Blood Ties - Complete Series 1
    Ginette Kneller 31 Jan 2008

Sadly another one of those series that as been condemed to be just one series. Why? Who knows but it could have gone on for a good few series.
We begin with a former police officer Vicki Nelson (played Christina Cox). Who having left the police force due to retinitis pigmentosa. She sets up her own private investigation agency. During a case that turns out to be anything but routine. She meets Henery Henry Fitzroy(played by Kyle Schmid)Who just so happens to be a real vampire and a descendant of royalty to boot (who claims to be the illegitimate son of Henry VIII) Add to that he is drop dead gorgeous(no pun intended)
They team up to solve the case which results in Vicki getting some freaky tattoo's and nearly letting a demon out of hell to wreak havoc. Lucky for her Henry's around to save the day.
The series goes from one Bizarre case to the next with lots of sexual chemistry between Vicki and Henry and Vicki's ex Mike Celluci(Played by Dylan Neal) Who is a person who doesn't believe until the super natural but when confronted with it wants nothing more than to ignore it again or let some one else deal with it.
Gina Holden plays Coreen Fennel, Vicki's self appointed assistant and is big into the occult as well as eager to help. She also as a soft spot for Henry, him being a vampire and all, kind of makes him the biggest curiosity of all.
He also has a lot of things hidden in his past and his appartment.

This series turns a few of the vampire law on it's head. I won't spoil it by saying what but its well worth watching. A must for anyone into vampires and the occult.

  • Tales From Earthsea [2007]
    Erin Britton 31 Jan 2008

Ursula K. Le Guin"s Earthsea Quartet are among the most popular fantasy novels of all time and so expectation for the film was understandably, even more so since it was to be a Studio Ghibli production (the first since 2005"s highly successful Howl"s Moving Castle). When thinking of Studio Ghibli, the first name that pops to mind is undoubtedly the great Hayao Miyazaki, arguably the greatest living anime director, and it was he who was originally intended to be the director of Tales From Earthsea. Unfortunately perhaps, when production started on Earthsea, Hayao Miyazaki was still working on Howl"s Moving Castle and so his son Goro stepped in to take over directing duties, causing a rather public rift with his father who did not think Goro should be given Earthsea as his first feature project. While Goro Miyazaki has certainly taken Earthsea in a different direction to the one to be expected from Hayao, Goro tells a rather epic and serious tale while Hayao more often produces a personal, humane and touchingly humorous story, Tales From Earthsea is still an amazingly beautiful and enchanting film. In an amalgamation of the final two books in the quartet, Tales From Earthsea follows the young Prince Arren as he is forced to confront his views on life and mortality following a terrible crime. Fleeing from his home at the palace, Arren falls into the company of the mysterious wizard Sparrowhawk. It is a time of great upheaval in Earthsea as people begin acting savagely, magic fades and dragons appear in the land of men. Sparrowhawk and Arren must join together with old friend Tenar and troubled orphan Therru to thwart the plans of evil wizard Lord Cob and bring peace back to Earthsea. The animation and soundtrack, as ever from Studio Ghibli, are excellent and the plot is engaging, although the main characters could perhaps have been further developed and concepts such as true names and the origins of the dragons that were almost casually mentioned could have been explained further. Despite a few minor flaws, Tales From Earthsea is another gem in the Studio Ghibli canon and a truly delightful film to watch.

  • Superbad [2007]

It was with trepidation that I watched this film, having been warned not to let my kids see it! After only the first couple of minutes I was all set to leave the room when something made me stay. Having seen 'Knocked up' and '40 year old virgin' I knew what to expect in terms of language and genre however I was naively shocked at the levels of crudeness and obsession that leave you in no doubt that teenage boys really do have one thing on their mind! The storyline is very straightforward,Seth ( Jonah Hill) and best friend Evan (Michael Cera) desparately want to loose their virginity before they go off to college and they believe their only chance of succeeding in this is by getting the girls drunk at a party. What follows is a chase for the alcohol before the party ends and the girls lose all interest. Along the way they meet two useless cops who befriend their pal 'McLovin' as more chaos ensues. Despite the innuendoes and crassness the softer side of the film is touching as the themes of friendship and gender differences are explored with poignancy. And it was that that made me stay to the end!

  • Transformers (2007)
    Joe 29 Jan 2008

Probably the best if not one of he best in the CG (computer graphics) scene to this day. Mesmerizing visuals along with well modelled action scenes is enough to fill your dosage of entertainment.

Be warned, for people who are not interested in the above, Transformers has a very weak script and narrative to dazzle the heavy going film lovers. This film is all about grade A hiollywood action entertainment

  • The Sin Eater [2003]
    Kashif Ahmed 28 Jan 2008

Atmospheric Christian conspiracy thriller in the vein of 'Stigmata' (though not as good) & 'End Of Days' (though not as badly acted) but unlike those millennium pictures which harboured distinct apocalyptic overtones, 'The Sin Eater' is more of a straightforward, Vatican centric murder mystery, albeit one where religion and religious superpowers play a major role.

Auteur Brian Helgeland ('Payback') reunites his cast from 'A Knights Tale': The late Heath Ledger stars as brooding NY priest Alex Briener; which is by far a better gig than jousting to 'Queen' songs, sexy Shannyn Sossamon a.k.a. mini-Winnona Ryder, also returns as an escaped mental patient who tried to kill Alex (but loves him really) after he botched her exorcism a few years back. Its' not a great role, but by far a better gig than cheering on some bloke jousting to 'Queen' songs. Mark Addy's back as Ledger's priestly sidekick and comic relief, which is a decent gig, quite a fair bit better than telling jokes as some bloke jousts to 'Queen' songs, in fact, the only cast member from 'A Knight's Tale' not to return was Paul Bettany, who obviously remembers playing a drunk Chaucer making crude jokes whilst some bloke jousted to 'Queen' songs. Though in all fairness; 'A Knight's Tale' wasn't the worst film ever made, and I'm sure it's great if you're 7. But back to 'The Sin Eater': Alex investigates the suspicious death of his order's spiritual leader, criminal deeds in Vatican (so what else is new?), the rise of a neo-pagan dark pope (which, believe it or not, is based on actual documented evidence), a mysterious dagger that holds some relevance to the age of Cathedrals, logic, faith, reason, love and if that wasn't enough: the existence of a fabled sin eater who...well; eats other people's sins. Sins, apparently, look like ghostly apparitions with a cool golden hue that can be soaked into a piece of bread and eaten like a dip. Nice. There are a lot of interesting ideas at work here, and many of them aren't fully explored, nonetheless; there's a fair bit of suspense & drama to see it though, plenty of sinister goings on and look out for an appearance by 'The Passion's' Satan; Rosalina Celentano. 'The Sin Eater' was promptly excommunicated from theatres upon its release in 2003, so perhaps its time for a reappraisal; for in the wake of the recent trend of mindless torture porn and gore, this movie seems like a complex and reflective masterpeice of Bergman-esque subtly, come back Helgeland: All is forgiven.

  • Frau im Mond (aka Woman in the moon) [Masters of Cinema]
    Jevon Taylor 27 Jan 2008

'The first scientific science-fiction film', which appears to have predicted much real space exploration (including the count down). As a someone who loves films and sci-fi novels, and has more than a passing interest in science, I had to check this out. Having done so I have recommended it to a number of friends, despite my sci-fi novel half being more delighted than my cinematic one. That said my cinematic side was very impressed to. This film tells the story of a bunch of honest engineers, a scientist and an 11 year old boy trying to achieve their dream of reaching the moon, and resist the evil grasps of an international cartel of greedy capitalists. It is sci-fi, spy/crime thriller, drama and road move all rolled into one, and rather than being a mess is very enjoyable.

The DVD looks incredible considering the films age and comes with a short documentary on the films relationship with real space exploration, as well an article pointing to all the important things about. Highly recommended.

  • My Way Home [1965]
    Jevon Taylor 27 Jan 2008

I had high expectations for this film, very high. I had already seen another war film by the director and think that it - The Red and the White - is the best war film I have ever seen. My Way Home did not dissapoint, though I still prefer the other.

My Way Home follows a young man trying to make his way home, through the Hungarian countryside, in the final days of WW2. His journey turns out to be plagued by arbitrary violence and kindness, the greatest of which takes shape in his friendship with a young Russian soldier into whose custody he is placed. Neither of the young men can speak each others language, but, posted to look after and milk livestock for the Russian army, walk and hang around together playing games and so on. For a while I thought I was watching an earlier attempt at Brokeback Mountain, but I shouldn't disclose anymore about the plot...

Visually it is beautiful, its characters and narative are compelling, its action realistic. The more I have thought about it the more I like it - a great war film, and a lot more to boot. The DVD presentation is also excellent, the image clear, and it comes with a documentary about the director and an essay on the film.

I truly unique made for Tv show. It has all you could need with some history thrown in for good measure. I wasn't so sure about it because it was made for Tv and they probably had a low budget to go with it. Yet it had me on the edge of my seat. Laughing at some of the character interaction.
Only knowing some of the work of Two of the cast members Hannah Spearritt from S Club Fame. I was glad to see that she could act as good as she sings and Ben Miller as their staid boss. Being stiff and only comprising when he knew he had the upper hand.
The idea behind the series was original and now, it would seem, a sucess. The ending had me wishing I didn't have to wait a year for the second series. It also had me wondering what would happen next.
    TRULY SENSATIONAL.
5 STAR. ITV1 should make more show like this.
