This is like a beautiful cream puff on a very elegant plate. The presentation is perfect. The icing sugar is glistening on top, the puff pastry a gorgeous yellow, you can't help marvel at it as you bring it to your mouth...
Unfortunately there is just air inside, and the pastry is stale.
This a pure fluff piece. While the settings and costumes are beautiful, there is very little happening, no development, and you could care less what happens to these people. Rip Torn and Asia Argento provide some entertainment, and some of the other casting is interesting, but that is all. I just couldn't wait for the end.

  • Family Guy, Series 2 [1999]

Family Guy season 2 is great. I recommend the first episode 'the big boom' it has great features and is worth the money!

  • Rear Window [1954]
    michael rutt 31 Mar 2007

Along with "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest" this intelligent and claustrophobic thriller from maestro Alfred Hitchcock deserves a place in any dvd collection worthy of its name.
Featuring a standout performance by Hollywood veteran James Stewart and a sympathetic one from Grace Kelly ,who never looked more stunning or gracefully costumed.
Thelma Ritter stars as the "lady who does" lends her usual touch of irony and comic relief to the otherwise dark proceedings.
The courtyard set is one of the most complex and cleverly effective to be fashioned by any movie set designer, whilst the score by Franz Waxman perfectly compliments the storyline and includes an achingly beautiful love theme "Lisa",written for the Grace Kelly character.
Raymond Burr adds a chillingly effective performance as the mysterious neighbour from across the courtyard.
For a memorable and tense thriller experience and one which involves the viewer completely, this exciting tale is one which can be revisited time and again and still the adrenaline is pumped and set to flow.........

  • Laurel & Hardy - The Collection (21-disc Box Set) [1918]
    Harry Bissix 31 Mar 2007

This was an incredible box set, if you are a true laurel and Hardy fan you will really like it. The two episodes on each DVD are a perfect compliment to each other and are expertly selected. The 'bonus disc' was quite good and it was odd watching an episode in German, because i have watched it so many times I practically know all the words. This is yet another example of the extent of the beauty of this box set. With over four thousand minutes of quality, and a box of laughs this is possibly the best box set ever made and i can't even contimplate the glamour of it, a must have for anyone wanting to laugh!!!!!

  • Down In The Valley [2006]
    Kashif Ahmed 31 Mar 2007

Ed Norton is excellent as troubled loner/ self-styled cowboy Harlan Crouthers, in David Jacobson's wistful, tragic romance. A metaphor for non practising Jewry's struggle to establish identity in the absence of Torah values and the mechanised, boring structure of religion when used as a conveyer belt towards geo-political dominance (e.g. internal corruption through Zionism, Talmudist Midrash, an obsession with yicchus and Phariseeism etc). 'Down In The Valley' is an undiscovered gem which thoroughly deserves a new lease of life on Blu-Ray & DVD.
Jacobson's film, despite its cinema vérité and reference heavy style, achieves a unique, and dreamlike quality which successfully evokes memories / emotions associated with the beginning of spring and thoughts of love. The relationship between Norton and Evan Rachel Wood's mature teen Tobe (which, we learn, is short for October) is subtle and realistic. I've always found Evan Rachel Wood slightly annoying, but she"s on top form here and though it may be too early for comparative accolades; Wood looks as if she"ll go on to be hailed as the new Sarah Polley. 'Down In The Valley's' supporting cast sees David Morse as Tobe's policeman stepfather, and Rory Culkin as her quiet younger brother, both actors give strong performances to complement the main Norton/Wood romance.
'Down In The Valley' is such a well-crafted, literary character study of loneliness and isolation, that one almost feels a little cheated by its eventual stride towards hi-concept genre film. Still, this is a fine picture, well written, acted & directed with believable characters and definite repeat viewing potential Recommend.

  • The U.S. Vs John Lennon
    adrian young 31 Mar 2007

First and foremost, i'd like to say that this is only for true Lennon fans, do not expect a rosie film about the loveable Beatle who is always coming out with witty comments. This film shows the activist, the true Lennon at his most controversial. I am currently reading a book about Lennon and his battle with immigration etc in the 70's and it does make you wonder what really happens in the U.S.A & makes you wonder how far from the truth films like 'Enemy of the state' really are with such things as heavy surveilence and phone taps...this is a very enjoyable documentary and any people who are truly interested in the real Lennon will love it.

  • The Exorcist - The Complete Anthology [1973]
    Malcolm Doughty 31 Mar 2007

It is impossible to better the original initial version, but this boxset comes very close indeed.
Dominion is an eye-opener, and sets the stage for the rest of the series. It is quite scary in places. 8/10.
The Beginning is a re-hash of Dominion. Slightly different storyline, but only the dates have changed. Better effects, and slightly more in depth sub plots. 9/10.
The Exorcist. Can't say more than what's already been said a thousand times over. Bloody scary, and a real eye opener. A classic! 10/10+.
The Heretic. Slightly stretched out follow on to the original. Storyline a little weak, but, non the less gripping. You've seen it before, you know what's coming! 6/10.
Exorcist 3. Goes off at a tangent to the original. Tries hard, but doesn't come close really. Good film, but not one I'd pay money to watch. 4/10.
The box-set is a great deal, and does make a welcome adittion to any collection. Overall I'd give it 8/10.
If it can scare a 'rather large' 'middle aged' bloke like me, then it's doing something right!
Go out and buy it horror fans....you won't regret it!

  • Extras - Series 2
    Yvonne 30 Mar 2007

Outstanding series! If you liked the first series, then you will LOVE this series. With the characters being well established it is even funnier and the cameo roles are excellent. Stephen Merchant and 'Barry' appear a lot more and really make this series.

  • Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny
    Kashif Ahmed 28 Mar 2007

As I like The D's music, its hard for me to admit that 'Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny' is not only bad, but at times, desperately unfunny. A lot of this has to do with the fact that Jack Black & Kyle Gas are kings when they"re rocking as 'The D' in music videos or onstage, but simply don"t have enough material to warrant an entertaining feature film. After all, the only reason 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' worked, was because of Kevin Smith's writing ability, the wealth of cameos and the culmination of over a decade's worth of 'View Askew' in-jokes. There's about 15-20 minutes worth of vintage D in this film, unfortunately, the movie clocks in at 90 minutes, which makes the flabby mid-section, in spite of some smirk-inducing cameos by Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller, practically unwatchable. And with next to no gags for almost half-an-hour, kills the momentum needed to make their 'Tribute' tribute rock off against Satan worth watching (which is a pity, because its actually one of the movie's funniest scenes). Lazily directed by Liam Lynch, best known for his song 'My United States Of Whatever' and MTV work, 'Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny' is a missed opportunity if ever there was one, and though it starts with a bang (Black's improv lyrics to Beethoven"s 9th are hilarious) quickly disappears in a puff of bong smoke. A real let down, you"re better off just watching their music videos: Great soundtrack, shame about the movie.

  • Lewis
    Robert Shaw 28 Mar 2007

First I think back to Morse and John Thaw, with Kevin Whately,as being one of the best series ever to come out on Britsh t.v.I as many fans thought, nothing can come after it and when John Thaw died I think most thought again thats it no more. But wrong, the magic is back with LEWIS I don't have to say any more,if you loved Morse you will love Lewis, the great Britsh crime story is back with the romance of Oxford and the determination of the good old English copper.

  • The History Of Tom Jones A Foundling [1997]
    Bryony Ryan 28 Mar 2007

This is a double disc period drama - though it feels fresh and natural and there are laughs a plenty. Max Beesley really captures Tom as a handsome young man who can get away with mayhem and pulls it off with considerable charm. Brian Blessed is, as ever, a star turn. There are many of our finest actors in this version and although the book may seem impossible to imitiate on film, i feel this comes as close as it is possible to get to the nature of the book on film.

  • Not Another Teen Movie [2001]
    Jon Clarke 28 Mar 2007

Grab a few beers and settle down to enjoy the sheer nonsense of Not Another Teen Movie. With jokes at the expense of American high school films and general bad taste gags, I haven't laughed so much in ages.

  • City Of God [2003]
    Jonathan Horne 28 Mar 2007

An excellent film showing the harsh realities of life in the slums of a south American country. The only thing that is harder to accept than the age of some of the children taking part in the crime and murders is the even worse attitude of the police.
Don't watch this movie if you want an evening's light entertainment, but if you really want to think about what you are watching then this is the film for you.

  • Supernatural Complete Season 1 Box Set

Great film definitely worth buying - really funny as well!!!!

  • Doctor Who - Tomb Of The Cybermen [1967]
    john bunnage 27 Mar 2007

Don't try to compare this with the recent incarnations of Dr Who.
Marvel not at the b/w low buget special effects and stilted one liner scripts- a classic being from an out of breath 'extra' 'we had to make it a big one' (sure to get killed off early on!)but just enjoy it for the plot, it's entertainment value and the fact it's part of something special in BBC history.
Get if only to show your kids how far tv has evolved in approx. 40 years.

  • Nell McAndrew's Ultimate Challenge - Ultimate Results
    Chantelle 27 Mar 2007

Fantastic! After buying 3 DVD's before this that were recommended to me this was by far the best if you are looking for a good cardio workout. The full workout can last for about an hour and a half. I consider myself to be at a good fitness level and I was knackered and ached the next day! A great overall workout and I've seen the results. Buy it if you want to get fit! Also great for toning and split into separate workouts if you don't fancy all the jumping around :)

  • Torchwood - Series 1 Vol.3
    Andrew 26 Mar 2007

A fantastic end to a great show, the last four episodes on this disk are excellent and the finale leads to a great closure for Series 1.
Well done the production team and here's to season 2 :)

  • Arlington Road [1999]
    Jon Pickering 26 Mar 2007

The opening scene has you gripped and the tension remains for the rest of the film. Jeff Bridges stars as the paranoid professor whos suspicions prove to be correct. His neighbour, Tim Robins, plays an equally convincing extremist whos plan to plant a bomb and blow up an FBI building comes to fruition with an unexpected twist at the end of the film. Unlike the majority of American movies, this film does not end with everyone living happily ever after. A convincing plot, well acted with plenty of tension.

  • Jack Dee - Live At The Palladium/Live In London/Live At The Hammersmith Apollo 2002/Live Again
    Alex Westwood 26 Mar 2007

This gives you a chance to see jack dee at his best. You can watch him go from strength to strength. The first dvd is not great since jack is still perfecting his act as it was filmed back in 1994 however there are still loads of funny bits in it. As the dvds get more recent jack gets grumpier and funnyier there is no repatition in his act so all the dvd's are different and funny in their own right. The latest dvd is so funny i laughed for almost the whole hour and let me tell you that actually hurts :-D. The other thing that makes this great is the price even at RRP the box set only costs £10 per dvd and since you are here i am sure you can get it cheaper.
BUY IT!!!!!!!!! what more can i say?
