  • The Mighty Boosh - Series 1 [UMD Universal Media Disc]
    Faye Harmon 25 Mar 2007

I often try to sum things up in five words if I'm having trouble explaining something to someone else: in the case of the unexplainable Boosh this is going to have to be done. So, without further ado, the Mighty Boosh:
    Zoo, jazz, gorilla, hair, shaman.
Confused? Don't worry. The Boosh delivers surrealist comedy in such an innocent fashion that you'll know exactly what's going on, and will suspend belief without thinking about it. It'll invade your life, until it's subliminal teachings work their magic and make you a happier (if more eccentric) person. Howard Moon (jazz maverick) and Vince Noir (King of the mods) are your guides into this hallucinogenic maze of uncertainty and kangaroo testicles, and you'll find it hard not to love them for inflicting this utter madness on you.

  • Smallville - The Complete Seasons 1 And 2
    Tom Dennison 24 Mar 2007

I have always loved everything Superman. When i saw Smallville, nothing changed. There are so many different stories.
The First season is very much based on the "freak of the week." A meteor infected baddie. For some this may grow boring, or frustrating, however i love it. It works so well, and as means of escapism, it is brilliant, it takes you out of your life as you know it, and places you in someone elses, extroadinary and different one. Relating to the characters is always extremely important, and through many different personaltities and the depth of each character it is easy to find one you relate to well. Clarks powers develop in both seasons a lot, in the first he discovers his ability of super/x-ray vision, and in the second his heat vision ability.
In the second season there is a reduced amount of freak of the weeks, instead, there is a development in characters and relationships. This season is also very important, as it is when Clark discovers more about his krytonian roots, and there is an introduction of Clarks biological Father, Jor-El.
Both are brilliant seasons, and if you're a big superman fan, you wont be disappointed.

  • Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny
    Hayley Rawlings 24 Mar 2007

Wow, what a film. Tenacious D are an awesome spoof metal band, who have created a new genre with regards to metal music. Jack Black's amazing career in both music and film brings a touch of reality to this fantastic film. The story of Tenacious D is filled with sadness, hope and laughter; giving the audience an insight into the band. Kylie Gass' bravardo "don't care" attitude creates amazing chemistry between the two performers; giving the characters depth. The introduction of Lee (from their first album) is also amusing, incorporating their earlier music in this album and also the new soundtrack which accompanies it.
The search for the "Pick of Destiny" is hillarious and yet sad; the exciting car chases, fights, and girls is a winning combination with one of the most talented people in music and film, Jack Black.
A must see for any fans of Tenacious D, Jack Black, and humerous films. Best film I've seen for ages.

  • Star Cops - Complete Series [1987]
    M Sayers 23 Mar 2007

I bearly remember this when it was first aired in the late 80's when I used to stay up late to watch it. I remembered it as a dark and menancing cop show in space full of murders committed in nasty futuristic ways and was looking forward to watching it again. I was not disappointed.
Many years later it is still a good show, not quite as dark as I remember and a little dated in the props and internal sets department, but the outside sets and some of the effects are good. (think early red dwarf moon scapes etc)
The acting and dialog is also good, although there are periods of silence, harking back to 70's style, which by todays standards is unusual and the way the actors talk or argue over the top of each other is strange to begin with, but you soon get riveted to the story and get used to the unusual style.
It definitely deserved a second series, which unfortunately it wasn't given, and is certainly worth buying.

  • Casino Royale [2006]
    Alex Westwood 22 Mar 2007

If I could I would give this film 5 stars.
This movie has had the treatment that the batman movies had they brought it back to its roots. In some of the more recent bond movies plots had become far-fetched gadgets even more so (E.g. an invisible car). This a true return to form, gritty real and plausible. The selection of Daniel Craig as the new bond was an excellent choice in my opinion he is both stylish and sophisticated yet at the same time has the rough edge which is necessary for this movie since bond has just acquired is "OO" status.
I have high hopes for future movies however they have a hard act to follow since this was a true Ian Fleming"s is it possible for them to repeat this excellent show without the backing of an Ian Fleming novel, all I know is that I will be there when it come out to find out.

  • Upstairs Downstairs: The Complete Series Boxset

This is set in one household, the Bellamy's and their servants in 1900.If you like to watch epoch drama, the way it used to be years ago , how they lived upstairs and downstairs, this is it. Relaxing serie to watch, no fancy plot, just plain and how it was with its sorrow, its fun and a bit of history thrown in, the sufragettes, death of a king, the Titanic... A lot of different characters to make it enjoyable and not boring. Maybe the life of your grandparents or great grand relative.

  • Prime Suspect 1 to 7 Box Set
    Galad 22 Mar 2007

Prime suspect is a must for the thriller/police fan. Helen Mirren shines as Tennison. Women equality or what! She walks like she owns the place, this is today's best of western. It takes you to watch it several times to get to grips with each case. Good suspense.

  • Warrior King
    John Langley 22 Mar 2007

    What a fantastic film!
A back to basics martial arts film with no wires and camera trickery just some unbelievable fighting moves and scenes.
This is made all the better with quite a decent story line as well tying the film together nicely.
Basically, if you enjoy martial arts films with loads of constant fight scenes against different fighting styles - you will absolutely love this film.

  • Life On Mars: Series 1
    Pauline Benzie 21 Mar 2007

Do you remember flares, Ford Cortinas, platforms, swirly wallpaper, spangles, big collars, kipper ties and the days before political correctness? This series takes you right back to the 1970s. John Simm and Philip Glenister are fabulous as the two cops trying to see where each is coming from. Set to a great 70s soundtrack, each episode is full of twists and turns with a good slice of comedy thrown in. Let me make a prediction for 2070 - this series will be a cult classic which will be spoken about in years to come!

  • Barbie - Magic Of The Rainbow
    Caroen Luttrell 21 Mar 2007

This is a great addition to the barbie collection, I have 2 little girls who absolutely love Elina and Bibble and they fell completely in love with the new puffball Dizzle. It's all about learning to work together to stop the evil Laverna cast Fairytopia into darkness by creating the first rainbow of spring at Fairy School. This is a must have for any little fairy princess!

  • Amelie [DTS] [2001]
    Stephen Springate 20 Mar 2007

Amelie is a good hearted young woman, living a contented if plain existence in a neighbourhood full of characters as colourful as the technicolour Paris that is the backdrop of her life. Using all kinds of exciting camera techniques, the legendary french director paints a beautiful story of a young woman who is touched when she finds a box full of treasures from a boy who lived in her house in the fifties, and she decides to reunite him with his past belongings. After many trips through a slightly surreal Paris, a city the director is obviously passionate of, she finds the man and decides she will devote her life to helping other people, until one day she begins to start helping herself after seeing a touching video from one of her elderly friends. Although passed off by some as 'just another whimsy arthouse flick', it is easy to see how this arthouse flick became mainstream upon its release, it emancipates a glow of warmth that will enlighten ayone who sees it.

  • Casino Royale [2006]
    Mike Barry 20 Mar 2007

Bond is back. BOND IS BACK! This film returns to 'Bond's' roots. The Connery days. No stupid gadgets or CGI, just muscle, guile and charisma. Right from the start you actually have the feeling that what you are watching is believable, rather than CGI fantasy, which is maintained for the full length of the film. Daniel Craig has brought the franchise back to the top where it belongs. Dame Judy Dench is really getting the hang of M oozing power and authority. Eva Green as Bond's accomplice Vesper Lund, is remote, hot and intelligent. Add to the mixture a menacing Mads Mikkelsen playing the ruthless arch enemy Le Chiffre and you have one hell of movie full of tension, action, romance and betrayal. A must see for every true Bond fan.

  • Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2 Disc Special Edition)
    john bunnage 20 Mar 2007

A really good film, one to sit and watch together as a family (so the younger one's don't get too scared). It is packed full of horror/comedy/chases- there is some really good stuntwork and you'll want to see disc 2 to find out "how they did that!". My only problem was keeping track of some of the characters as they seem to swap sides from being goodies to badies and visa versa too easily!

  • Great Conductors - Carlos Kleiber [1970]
Oleg Van Illian 20 Mar 2007

Wonderfull to see how a 'younger' Carlos achieves those almost transparent sonorities and explosive climaxes.A unique psychological understanding of musical line and use of metaphore(s) obviously helped a great deal! Even when some players are 'resistant' to some of his sugestions,ie as in the Weber, the humble maestro still finds a way to cajole and coax results...A veritable 'masterclass' in musical comunication and a prize example to all those studying and performing any area of classical music,be it solo, instrumental, chamber or orchestral music. If in 'doubt',simply enjoy the full live concert at the end of the rehearsal, where all comes to marvellous fruition...
    One to revisit,again and again.

An enjoyable film with cute cuddly penguins. Ideal to keep the kids happy and amusing for adults. Finding Nemo meets March of the Penguins

  • Severance
    Gary Budden 17 Mar 2007

"Severance" is a British comedy-horror hybrid, from director Christopher Smith, is a pleasing mixture of survival horror and British comedy. Think "Deliverance", "Hills Have Eyes" and more recently (and more British) "Dog Soldiers", but with the protagonists replaced with recognisable and endearingly crap English office workers on a team building exercise in Hungary (including Danny Dyer, whom I still have a liking for, perhaps from too many viewings of "Human Traffic" as a teenager). It"s not exactly "The Office meets Deliverance" as the taglines stated, but the film is an entertaining enough spin on a well-worn genre.
However, there is a niggling constant in this film that I could just not shake off, and something that most reviews seem to have curiously ignored. Not too give too much of the plot away, but it turns that the area in which the hapless Brits (and one American) find themselves appears to be an area where Eastern European, possibly Russian, war criminals are still in hiding in the forests, homicidal and out for blood. This quasi-political edge to the film is badly handled, poorly explained and feeds into lazy fears about people from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, exploiting them to, presumably, up the terror for the popcorn audiences.
Not for one second will I attempt to deny that atrocities did occur in the area in the last twenty years, as it is public knowledge that such things have occurred in Eastern Europe. Where exactly? When? Why? We"re not sure. According to Christopher Smith, it doesn"t matter, as long as he can utilise the imposing figure of a balaclava wearing, rifle toting maniacal soldier speaking threateningly in an Eastern European language. What country is this film set in? Hungary, it is implied at the beginning of the film, but we are never sure. Who are these guys with the guns and balaclava"s? War criminals. Right. What war? What country are they from? What language are they speaking? Why are they killing people anyway? None of these questions are answered, as in the logic of the film it doesn"t matter. They are bad. That"s it.
Forgive me if I read too much into this, but it is curious that a film that focuses on Eastern Europe as source of horror directed against the British comes at a time when Hungary, Estonia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Poland became members of the EU in 2004, followed by Romania and Hungary in 2007. The panic over the waves of immigration that followed, in my view, is exploited unashamedly in "Severance", perpetuating a stereotype that is, at worst, downright offensive and at best, lazy and xenophobic.
And what to make of the sections featuring the two near-naked, mud covered "Balkan Babes" that our everyman Brit, Danny Dyer, leers at "FHM" style? Smutty and infantile, if I"m being kind. Give me "Dog Soldiers" any day, a film that was funny, was gory and didn"t play off Joe Everyman"s tabloid bred fear of Eastern European men taking "our" jobs, and the lads-mag fantasy of Eastern European women taking off their clothes.

  • Head On [2004]
    Gary Budden 17 Mar 2007

For me, Fatih Akin's 'Head On' was a film that seemed to come out of nowhere, an adrenaline blast giving voice to a new immigrant generation. The film focuses on two Turks living in Hamburg, Germany: Cahit, a near middle-aged alcoholic chain smoking punk fan, a widower who has abandoned his Turkish roots, and Sibel, a beautiful twenty something desperate to escape the strictures of her traditional Turkish family. They meet after mutual suicide attempts. A sham marriage ensues, on the grounds that Cahit is eligible due to his race. And, of course, the two eventually fall in love. To say more would be to spoil it.
'Head On' feels utterly modern and totally relevant, focusing on a new Muslim diaspora and how they cope living in Western Europe, with the inevitable cultural confusion that follows. Seething with punk energy, visceral shocks and genuine romance, I cannot recommend it enough. The soundtrack is ace too...
