Watching Doves: Where We're Calling From, with its plethora of additional material above and beyond the top-quality music, it's easy to forget that the Doves have only released two albums to date. This is a band that has worked tirelessly to nurture a dark but accessibly intelligent sound and image--a mix of Oasis-style pop-rock coupled with the bleak desperation of Radiohead. Thematically, the disc draws on their darker side. It has a state-of-the-art opening menu, incorporating a panoramic sub-apocalyptic cityscape, and a haunting soundtrack. This continues a theme established in some of their promo videos, which mock the fake idealism of modern society, particularly the loss of identity through consumerism ("There Goes the Fear") and the failure of planned urban utopias ("Pounding"). Mourning the demise of craftsmanship, the sepia video for "Sea Song" comprises footage of a man constructing a wooden rocking chair. Contributing to the strange, claustrophobic atmosphere of the DVD, the concert footage recorded at Cornwall's futuristic Eden project includes live performances of their greatest hits and selected album tracks. Performed in front of the eerily lit domes, the show sums up the Doves' weird mass appeal. On the DVD: Doves: Where We're Calling From heralds a new era in music DVD by reinventing selection menus. Instead of numerous sub-menus, all of the features are included on one huge menu that can be navigated by using the left and right keys on the remote control, creating a 360-degree feel. However like an unwieldy child, the disc's interactive features need constant attention so that they behave in the way you want. --John Galilee

  • James Taylor - Live At The Beacon Theatre [1998]James Taylor - Live At The Beacon Theatre | DVD | (15/12/2003) from £6.69   |  Saving you £-0.70 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Sensitive singer-songwriter, soft-rock poster boy, baby-boomer troubadour: James Taylor has outlived the stereotypes offered by fans and critics alike by simply staying his musical course and continuing to refine his familiar, deceptively mellifluous style. This 1998 concert displays Taylor's craftsmanship and easy rapport with both his band and his audience to satisfying effect, offering a repertoire that draws from his entire career while providing a generous selection of songs from his Grammy-winning 1997 set, Hourglass. Fans will love it, of course, but even jaded listeners can find fresh feeling and formidable expertise here.By now, Taylor's skill at low-key love songs is a given, making him an archetypal "sensitive New Age guy" on the strength of his canny mix of emotional vulnerability, romantic imagery, and understated delivery. Less obviously, Taylor has gradually transformed the shadows of disillusionment audible in his earliest songs into a nuanced acknowledgement of his own age. "Line 'Em Up," from Hourglass, typifies his skill at limning disarmingly lucid, frankly philosophical vignettes, here woven around a recollection of Richard Nixon's last hurrah, while "Jump Up Behind Me" affords a testament to self-determination ultimately as serious in theme as it is buoyant in its musical framework. Throughout, Taylor's stage band proves a thoroughbred, its accompaniment rock solid and delicately detailed, and perfectly matched to a crack backing chorus.Among the first video concerts produced with DVD in mind, Live at the Beacon Theatre has been in heavy rotation in home demonstration suites ever since its release, an achievement understandable after hearing the crystalline 5.1 mix engineered by Frank Filipetti, who shared a Grammy as co-producer on Hourglass and snagged a second award for his engineering of that album. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

  • ABBA - In Concert [1979]ABBA - In Concert | DVD | (29/03/2004) from £7.39   |  Saving you £2.60 (35.18%)   |  RRP £9.99

The title ABBA--In Concert is perhaps a little misleading in promising something a bit more "live" than is actually delivered. While this "official" TV film provides a fascinating insight into ABBA's 1979 tour of North America and Europe, the first segment of the 50-minute documentary is given over almost exclusively to behind-the-scenes material. As the film progresses and the action shifts from the US to London's Wembley, more live performance footage is included such as full length renditions of "Chiquitita", "Dancing Queen" and "Summer Night City". Made by Swedish television company SVT, and released for the first time on DVD in 2004 to coincide with ABBA's 30th anniversary, Urban Lasson's film begins by charting the group's attempts to crack the US. Rather than using a narrator to guide the viewer through the scenes, the film competently uses stylish images to tell the story of the group's trip across the continent. Recorded at the height of the disco era, the American footage is dominated by images of roller skaters, and some of the live material from the Wembley shows was shot by a roller-skating cameraman, so that he could move more quickly on stage to get the best shots. The four split just a couple of years after this tour, making the film one of a few quality recordings of the band playing live. It's a shame that additional full performances of other ABBA favourites were not recorded, or included in the final cut. However the disc does include previously unreleased DVD footage of "The Way Old Friends Do", "I Have A Dream" (Unedited Live Version) and "Thank You For The Music" to partially compensate for this. On the DVD:As well as the bonus concert performances, the DVD includes recently recorded interviews with the film director Urban Lasson, and the promoter and tour producer Thomas Johansson. A tour souvenir programme picture gallery is also included, and the disc comes with a 28-page colour booklet, which features an excellent extended essay by Carl Magnus Palm on the making of the film. The soundtrack has been painstakingly remastered in 5.1 Surround Sound, making the live performances sound stunning. --John Galilee
