Anyone who has seen Status Quo in action during their spectacular forty year career will have thrilled to the undisputed kings of heads down no-nonsense boogie. In a unique in depth interview Quo drummer of nearly 20 years John Coghlan reveals what it was like to be the powerhouse in one of the worlds most successful rock bands during their seventies heyday. Further fascinating insight is provided by producer Pip Williams the man behind eight of their greatest albums. Woven around their stories is footage drawn from classic Status Quo performances throughout the years. The programme also features analysis of the band and its music by a specially assembled team of respected music critics plus the memories of ex-Remus Down Boulevard guitarist Dennis Stratton who was with them on their infamous seventies tours.
Probably the most comprehensive anthology of any musical artist to date, the 47-track Best of Bowie traces the guises of David Bowie over the last four decades. From the androgynous, glam rock rebel of the 1970s, to his more recent incarnation as the self-labelled, postmodern pop ironist of the 90s. The collection provides an added insight into wider developments in fashion, music and the pop video. Most of the early material is taken from television music programmes such as The Old Grey Whistle Test ("Oh! You Pretty Things", "Queen Bitch", and "Five Years"), however, as the demands of television and music promotion progress, Bowie ventures into more sophisticated stand-alone videos culminating in 1983's "Let's Dance". As with any biographical visual record of the past, there's plenty of material, which will embarrass Bowie. Throughout his cheesy performance of "Rebel, Rebel" for Dutch programme Top Pop, Bowie sports what looks like a ginger tomcat on his head. There's also the George Michael-style bleach blonde quiff for 1987's "Time Will Crawl". Despite the mountains of material on both discs, there are a number of unexplainable absences such as "Changes", "Under Pressure" and "Sound and Vision". Watch out for the Best of Bowie part two. On The DVD: Best of Bowie's animated menus, and the opening menu sequence of both discs are excellent. Although there are no listed bonus features, the discs are swarming with extra "Easter egg" features such as alternative videos and vintage interviews (these can be accessed via the track-listing menu, by pressing the RIGHT followed by the SELECT key on selected tracks). Background information about each video is displayed before the start of every promo, which is reproduced in the accompanying glossy booklet. The sound and picture quality is variable for early videos but improves (admittedly erratically) for later videos. --John Galilee

This is the ultimate critical review of one of the most under-rated bands in the history of rock. Van der Graaf Generator was enormously influential both in the seventies and beyond. The music is complex intelligent and inspired. It can also be obscure and unapproachable. Love it or loathe it the music of Van der Graaf is an art form in itself. Drawing on rare archive footage previously unreleased on DVD this independent critical review features in-depth studies and reflections on t

Written in the small print on the back of this awesomely comprehensive 170 minute-plus DVD are the words, "'Robbie Williams' is the trademark of Robert Peter Williams". The irony is that just a few years ago no one in their right mind would have wished to impersonate or otherwise infringe on the trademark of someone who was generally perceived as just another ex-boy band hasbeen. The story of how Mr Williams transformed himself from lardy motormouth to world-conquering (h)it boy will surely be made into a film one day and, just as surely, Robbie himself will convince the responsible studio that there is only one person capable of essaying the lead role. For now, though, the aptly titled Where Egos Dare will have to suffice. First up is the singer's now semi-legendary 1999 concert at Slane Castle which does indeed find our hero on top form, belting out a greatest-hits set ("Millennium", "Let Me Entertain You", "Angels" et al.) complete with tongue-in-cheek commentary ("That's one of my better lyrics!"). Also included is a raft of extras from the concert including backstage hijinks and film of Robbie and band rehearsing. On the non-Slane front, meanwhile, Where Egos Dare is blessed with a veritable abundance of Robbie riches from the video for "rock DJ" to footage of him recording his last album to a hilarious clip of rehearsals for the 1998 Brits which proves that, if there's no one that can sing quite like him, sometimes there's no one that can sing quite as off-key as him either. --Clark Collis
