  • Duran Duran - ArenaDuran Duran - Arena | DVD | (05/04/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Released for the first time on DVD to coincide with Duran Duran's 25th anniversary tour, Arena (An Absurd Notion) was the band's first live album and foray into film. Pop idols ranging from Elvis to the Spice Girls have all attempted to make the crossover to the big screen; often such celluloid adventures turn into disasters, with the performers' acting talents rarely matching their vocal proficiencies. Filming is squeezed into a few days between the recording of a new studio album and other duties such as touring, ensuring that the end result is typically dire. Arena manages to avoid many of those pitfalls by giving the band no opportunity to act, instead focusing exclusively on their live concert performance. An additional SF sub plot is included centred on Doctor Duran--the evil dictator from cult film Barbarella, from whom the band got their name. The doctor, played by original actor Milo O'Shea, returns to earth from exile confused by the fans' call for Duran Duran. Crash-landing his ship underneath the stage, he and his three Brummie henchmen are determined to disrupt the show. Despite their attempts to abduct fans, and create anarchy the band continue to perform. Very much a product of its time, the film combines nomadic futuristic imagery with a big budget. Following the critical acclaim of the "Wild Boys" video, Arena seeks to capitalise on its style but also take the promotional video to a new extreme using expensive sets and special effects. The Barbarella sub-plot serves little purpose apart from illustrating the story behind the band's name. The live performance footage is excellent though, not just because of the music but also the guys' authentic mullet hairstyles. On the DVD:The original "Making of Arena" documentary is included on the DVD, along with a vintage interview with Simon Le Bon. The dubbed TV ad for the video and album is also featured along with a trailer, and video mix. Considering the age of the film, the sound and visuals have both transferred well to DVD, with the extended mix of "The Reflex" sounding particularly good. --John Galilee

  • Genesis - The Way We Walk - Live In Concert [1992]Genesis - The Way We Walk - Live In Concert | DVD | (03/12/2001) from £33.86   |  Saving you £-13.87 (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

For Genesis fans old and new, The Way We Walk--Live in Concert has definitely been worth the wait. Recorded at London's Earl's Court in November 1992 as part of the group's 56-date world tour, the footage recreates one of their most lavish live tours ever. With a back-stage crew of over a 100, giant video screens and state-of-the-art lighting this was a massive event. The DVD is an equally colossal affair, incorporating over eight hours of concert footage on two discs (a two-hour concert recorded from four separate camera angles). The multi-camera presentation is amazing, providing a unique front-row perspective of all the stage action. The star of the concert is undoubtedly Phil Collins who leaps around, and batters his drum kit like a hormonal teenager. His evangelical introduction to "Jesus He Knows Me" is particularly fitting and amusing. There are also performances of some of Genesis' greatest hits, including "Dance on a Volcano", "Home By the Sea" and! "Invisible Touch". The re-mastered introduction to "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" sounds tremendous, with the flashing video screens creating an Armageddon-style atmosphere. Audience favourite "Turn It On Again" provides the ultimate ending to the show. On the DVD: The remixed, surround sound audio track is excellent but despite the multi-camera options the quality of the visual material fails to withstand the rigours of digital presentation. The uninterrupted group commentary is also disappointing, with too many lengthy silences, unnecessary disturbances (mobile phones ringing, unrelated discussions) and little new information about the tour given. The other extras are far more sophisticated such as the comprehensive interviews with Banks, Rutherford and Collins. The original tour programme (including text and photographs) can also be flicked through on screen. The "full-motion" menus are fun and easy to use.--John Galilee

  • Manic Street Preachers - Louder Than War [2001]Manic Street Preachers - Louder Than War | DVD | (24/09/2001) from £6.69   |  Saving you £-0.70 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

A month before the release of their sixth album in early 2001, the Manic Street Preachers organised a one-off gig in Cuba. Louder than War contains footage of the entire concert (famously attended by President Fidel Castro), as well as the group's caper around the island. The country was chosen by the Manics because of Cuba's anti-American stance, a position that band members supported and have drawn upon in their material. Superbly produced and edited, the end result however fails to represent the group's visit and views in a positive light. Reading between the lines, it's obvious that their trip was just as much a challenge to Americanisation as Wham's 1985 tour of China. The band verbally acknowledge that communism has always been openly romanticised, however they fail to recognise the extent to which they have done the same with this "promotional" concert, and the subsequent merchandising and PR opportunities. Putting ideological issues aside, the disc provides further evidence of the Manics' flair for live performance. The dulled colours of the visual material create a drab, if somewhat oppressive atmosphere, but add much needed authenticity to the proceedings. The unreleased tour diary sets the scene more comprehensively than the previously broadcast Cuba documentary, which is also contained on this disc. This is a must for all Manics fans, as well as those wanting a non-guidebook (if somewhat romanticised) view of modern-day, urban Cuba. On the DVD: The disc is stuffed full of bonus material but the extensive track listing does exaggerate the amount of original footage featured (the same live performance material being used both in the "gig" section, and in the Cuba documentary). There's also loads of hidden bonus material that can be accessed by selecting/clicking on the "Bonus Feature" captions that intermittently pop-up: such as their meeting with Fidel Castro, and a full-length version of the Radio Progresso interview. There are breathtaking photos of the guys featured in the photo gallery, and the Manics' discography is particularly thorough (the highest chart positions, the artwork and track listings of all their single and album releases are all included). Furthermore, all of the live footage can be listened to in either Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround or PCM stereo. The menus are relatively straightforward to use, however the utilisation of the group's trademark blocky typeface in the sub-menus occasionally makes it difficult to read/select track names. The DVD-ROM link is also particularly tricky to access, mainly due to the basic and rather confusing instructions provided on the disc for accessing this "exclusive" link.--John Galilee

Cat Stevens' recording career spanned 12 years from October 1966 to November 1978 recording 11 albums. His most creative period was whilst he recorded Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser And The Firecat. With the hit single Wild World entering the US charts in 1971 Cat Stevens flew to America where this intimate concert was recorded. This rare classic performance captures the warmth of his studio recordings with passion and depth. After all these years it is good to be reminded of Cat Stevens' original and creative talents and the huge contribution he made to the singer/songwriter genre.
