Even before he steps out onto the stage, the audience is on its feet clapping and screaming for Barry Manilow in Manilow Live!, which was filmed in Nashville in February 2000. Walking out and launching into "Could it Be Magic?" Manilow proves his pipes are as strong and clear as ever and his suits still as dapper. He promises "beautiful melodies, passionate lyrics, great grooves, and maybe even some swivelling hips", to the delight of the sold-out house. A consummate showman, Manilow performs 24 of his biggest hits accompanied by full orchestra. During "Can't Smile Without You", the audience holds up signs bearing smiley faces, hearts, and "ME" in hopes that the singer will pick them for his traditional duet. "Bandstand Boogie," the long-time theme song for American Bandstand, rocks the house, then Manilow brings it down for perennial favourite, "Mandy", which segues into "Even Now". His timing is impeccable, and he knows exactly how to work the adoring crowd. The accordion interlude is particularly amusing, as is "Flight of the Bumblebee" played on a kazoo. Mixing pop, jazz, disco and big band, Manilow moves smoothly through the two-hour set, alternately sitting at the piano or standing at the mike. The bluesy "That's Life" gets an infusion of energy from audience participation, and "Copacabana" is just as infectious as ever (with Manilow doing a little of that hip-swivelling). Ending with a heartfelt encore of "Stars in the Night", Manilow Live! is a must-have for fans. --Dana Van Nest, Amazon.com

  • Bryan Adams - Live In Ireland [2001]Bryan Adams - Live In Ireland | DVD | (04/03/2002) from £14.43   |  Saving you £-8.44 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Built around Bryan Adams' Ireland show, Live at Slane Castle, Ireland is just one of the stops on his massive world tour in 2000. Adams, the gravely voiced "Groover from Vancouver", rose to prominence in the 1980s with rock hits such as "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Summer of '69", but has more recently been transformed into something of a Hollywood troubadour, scoring hits with songs such as "Everything I Do, I Do It For You" (from Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves) and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" (from Don Juan DeMarco). Flanked by drummer Mickey Curry and guitarist Scott on guitar, the trio perform amidst the stately surroundings of Slane Castle. Bryan and his band cover most of the singer's vast repertoire, including "18 Til I Die", "Heaven", "Run to You", "Can't Stop This Thing We Started", "Best of Me" and his recent hit with Mel C, "When You're Gone" (for which the indefatigable songstress pops in unexpectedly for a croon). Adams proves he is a confident and charismatic host, bringing fans up on stage to sing with him, cracking jokes and generally behaving like soft rock's "Mr. Nice Guy". Other musical guests are drafted in throughout the show, namely Davy Spillane and Chicane's Nick Bracegirdle. The crowd show their appreciation by singing well-known lines when the band fall purposefully silent and holding their lighters aloft for the more poignant moments. There are not a lot of musical adventures in Adams' music--just slightly anachronistic and often clichéd formulas--but for the 56,000 people watching at Slane Castle (many of them surprisingly young and enthusiastic), it certainly seems to do the trick. On the DVD: though the concert gives a good profile of Adams and his music, the extras on the DVD struggle to be quite so entertaining. The accompanying booklet is colourful enough with a few bad photos of Bryan inside, but is intensely uninformative. On the disc there are backstage sections, which show him rehearsing to a crowd of two, and the "nerve wracking" moments just before he goes on stage. As insights go, these are banal to say the least. The interview section also misses a great opportunity to ask the singer about a 20-year career full of big hits, concentrating instead on such racy and profound topics as pre-gig nerves and favourite song. The gallery of photography--some shot by the excellent Anton Corbijn--is tastefully done and there is also the option to view five of the songs from the 360-degree static view, a facility that is a novelty but hardly captures the moment. There is an opportunity to go "interactive" with Bryan by placing the disc into your PC.--Paul Sullivan

  • You Can Sing-Seven Steps to Singing [2003]You Can Sing-Seven Steps to Singing | DVD | (29/09/2003) from £7.71   |  Saving you £-1.72 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Aimed principally at those who love posing in front of their bedroom mirror pretending they're the next Madonna or Robbie, You Can Sing is a bluffers' guide to singing pop. The main feature follows teenagers Danni and Peter as they receive coaching from two of the UK's leading pop-vocal coaches, Carrie and David Grant. Unlike the cut-throat competition of Pop Idol and Fame Academy, this is a cosy step-by-step guide to singing, with the Grants adopting cuddly teacher personas. The two students are not your everyday pop wannabes either, having seemingly been dragged in from stage school rather than the street. The feature climaxes with the pair putting into practice Carrie and David's seven steps to success (ranging from breathing technique to vocal range) by professionally recording tracks such as Williams's "Angels" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful". The show includes advice from some of the Grants' most recent and successful students—among them Will Young, Melanie C and Lemar--and there are also brief guidance segments on topics such as whether it's safe to sing with a cold. Critics might say that a programme such as this simply encourages more second-rate karaoke singers to dream of pop stardom; but at the very least it might ensure that future pop-reality shows aren't short of talent. On the DVD: You Can Sing's somewhat lacklustre main feature is boosted by the interactivity of the extra material included on the disc. The songs "Angels" and "Beautiful" can be practised at home in karaoke-fashion, with the lyrics flashed on to the screen. There's also the opportunity to feel what it's like to perform in front of a roaring live crowd. The interviews with the star graduate can be watched in their entirety via the bonus material menu and the short feature on correctly holding a hair brush as if it is a microphone is fun and informative.--John Galilee
