Released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Presley's death in August 2002, Elvis: The Ultimate Collection is a comprehensive five-hour collection of the US television series of the same name. The series divides Elvis' career into six distinct but not watertight eras ("The Memphis Years", "The Television Years", "The Hollywood Years", "The Memphis Mafia", "The Comeback Special" and "The Vegas Years"). There's a great deal of overlap between the episodes, with many of the key events being re-explored in subsequent parts (i.e., Presley's conscription into the army, and his move into Hollywood movies). As with all Elvis documentaries the usual band of biographers and "friends" are interviewed, and standard television news and movie footage is used. "The Memphis Mafia" part is the most critical section of the collection, highlighting the destructive power of Presley's inner circle. However, the overall uncritical style of the series will undoubtedly appeal to Elvis enthusiasts; due to its sheer length and repetitiveness it is not recommended for those just wanting a concise audio-visual account of this modern-day icon. On the DVD: Elvis: The Ultimate Collection comes on two discs with a clear, sharp picture and a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The first disc includes a short photo gallery of Elvis, with additional DVD-Rom features on Disc 2. These include PDF documents of a poorly written eight-page biography of the star, and a confusing ten-page discography, along with an Ultimate Collection screensaver. --John Galilee

Julian Bream tells his remarkable story with contributions from John Williams, Peter Pears, Igor Stravinsky, William Walton, George Malcolm, Richard Rodney Bennett, Ali Akbar Khan and The Julian Bream Consort. Illustrated with over an hour of complete musical performances.Julian Bream is considered by many as the greatest classic guitarist of the twentieth century and, as if this were not enough, he also quietly reinvented the renaissance lute and bought it to a new and stimulated audience.Written for Bream, Benjamin Britten's 'Nocturnal' Op. 70, is widely regarded as an important centerpiece of the modern guitar repertoire and this masterpiece forms an appropriate frame for Julian's story. Director Paul Balmer returned Bream to Aldeburgh, revisiting the original manuscript at Britten's home. This culminated in the guitarist coming out of retirement to perform complete movements of the Britten and the de Falla 'Homenaje' in the wonderful acoustic of the Snape Maltings.

Later... Louder is combination of the most rock & roll moments from Jools Holland's late night BBC2 show, which offers the only slot currently on terrestrial TV for New and experimental music. Due to this, Later... Louder offers the cream of the indie and rock crop over the last 10 years. Beginning with Dave Grohl in fine form with the Foo Fighters, we then switch to his mates Queens of the Stone Age belting out "No One Knows". More spot-the-connection fun follows, as the Screaming Trees' 1996 performance of "All I Know" sees a young Josh Homme on lead guitar. These connections run pretty much all the way through the disc, which adds an interesting slant on how to create a DVD track listing. With stand-out performances from the White Stripes, PJ Harvey and the Soundtrack of our Lives, Later... Louder also features the interviews from the original shows with such wide ranging talents as New Order and Courtney Love. This is a must for all those who are in need of a varied rock diet. On the DVD: Later... Louder offers an accessible menu and has an innovative way to access the interviews on offer during a song: a double-bass icon that pops up during the performance. The visual aspect of the DVD is standard enough at 16:9, but you'll find yourself wishing that they had cranked up the Dolby Digital to offer surround sound, as the 2.0 stereo offers a little less oomph. --Nikki Disney
