  • Bones: Season 1
    Sean 10 Oct 2008

I never watched this show when it started, purely because I'm stuck up when it comes to TV and rarely like watching a new show... however recently I saw some of the promo adverts air on sky one and it made me chuckle and so the intrigue was there, I quickly hopped online and checked out the pricing to find the cheapest copy of season 1 I could find, and boy am I glad I did.

The show is funny, dramatic, scary and above all else entertaining. While I doubt very much that either of the two main characters (Bones & Booth) will be killed off, there have been times I have honestly thought one of the support characters such as Hodgkins were about to die or leave the show and this is because of the great writing and acting the show possess.

Honestly if I had started watching this show when it started I'd be hyped up for season 3 about to come out, however as it is, I'm about to start looking for a copy of season 2.

  • Sex and the City: The Movie [2008]
    Paul Jones 10 Oct 2008

Well I watched all the series and enjoyed them (ish) My girlfriend and I made a compromise, I watch SATC and she watched Battlestar Gallactica. I was happy when it was over and luckily didn't have to go the cinema to watch this. However the other night I bit the bullet and rented this as a surprise.
This is what I thought. First off there was no need to make this movie. The series ended with nothing left to be told. It does come across as a bit of a cash in, but that is Hollywood sometimes! There are some funny moments in the film and I can see why females will appreciate the movie. The film centres round SJP and her wedding to 'BIG'. Within the first hour the predictable happened and it became slighltly entertaining when the girls went on holiday. All the characters are here and all have their time in the spotlight. My biggest disapointment was the lack of Samantha time and the lack of 'funny' antics in the bedroom. This always entertained me in the series as it was so ludicrous but was amusing. Another gripe is the running time. It is 2.5hrs long and drags in the last third of the movie. I would not buy this and wouldnt really care if i saw it again. However it is not as bad as I thought it would have been so the husbands and boyfiends out there, suck it up and you might even crack a smile whilst watching it.

A mans view on a womans world.

  • Dolls [2003]
    Martin Bradley 09 Oct 2008

I can't judge this Takeshi Kitano movie against his others as it's the first one I've seen but it seems to me the work of a master; someone who has honed his craft to the nth degree and who knows a great deal about telling stories in purely visual terms.

There are three stories in "Dolls". In the first a young man feels it is his responsibility to care for the woman he has driven to madness and attempted suicide to the extent that he gives up everything he has for her. It has the simplicity and poignancy of a great short story. From all reports the second story may be more typical of Kitano, dealing as it does with a yakuza. But it, too, confounds expectations; the fact that the main character is a gangster proves almost inconsequential. Rather it is a meditation on old age, death and lost love. These stories bleed into each other with the central characters in the first moving seamlessly into the second.

There is a third story involving a pop singer and the fan who loves her but by now these stories have become like those Russian dolls, one fitting perfectly into the other. There is also a prologue and an epilogue that adheres to the first story. They are all love stories and all are indelibly moving. The film is also wonderfully photographed in colour and wide-screen and Kitano wrote it, directed it and edited it. It is, indeed, the work of a master and makes me want to rush to see his other work.

    Three extraordinary love stories

  • Sex and the City: The Movie [2008]
    Craig Macdonald 08 Oct 2008

Sex and the City: the movie picks up four years after the last episode of the celebrated television series ended, with the lives of the characters we know so well changing vastly in this time. Charlotte and Harry have managed to adopt Lily, a chinese orphan. Samantha and Smith are living an enviable life in Los Angeles, Miranda, Steve and Brady are playing happy families out in Brooklyn, and Carrie and Big are back together following on from the events of An American Girl in Paris (part une and deux). However, events of the film do not play out as expected, and to fans of the series, the emotional scenes are hard hitting, showing a previously unexplored dimension to the characters that we already know and love.

Sex and the City has always been as much about the fashion as the sex, and the film showcases designs from Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta, Christian Dior, Gucci, and of course Patricia Field herself. Montages over the course of the film show bridal couture, and fashion best left forgotten, and any fan of fashion will want to see the dvd more than once just so that they can gape at the outfits once more.

To any fan of the series, the movie provides much of the same. The characters experience emotional growth, we're introduced to new characters, and as they move on through their lives, we see how even as they age, they will still be fifty and fabulous. For anyone not familiar with the series, a catch up provided at the start of the film allows the casual viewer to understand what's going on - and by the end of the film, you may want to go back and watch the series from the start. Whilst the Sex and the City movie sequel has not been officially confirmed, Sex and the City the movie provides a continuation of a story the fans never expected. If you're a fan of the series, the movie is something not to be missed. You'll either love it, or hate it, but no matter how you feel about it, there's no denying that it is 100% sex and the city - from the sex, to the shoes, and finally, to the city.

  • E.R. - Series 11 - Complete
    Sarah MacLeod 08 Oct 2008

Although the star of ER has dimmed since the first three exceptional seasons it still remains an entertaining and often emotional programme with the occasional shock along the way. Season eleven is underrated in terms of quality but has the misfortune of coming after a lacklustre season ten. The first episode picks up after the previous season's cliff-hanger of Jing-Mei and Pratt involved a car chase and being threatened with a gun. As the season progresses various characters depart, some return and new ones arrive. Neela wonders whether she"s really cut out to be a doctor, Carter mourns the loss of his son and misses Kem, Weaver finally meets with her biological mother, Sam is still harassed by her ex-boyfriend, Ray has to decide between his band and his job and Abby suffers a terrifying ordeal at the hands of a child with a gun. The stand out episode of this season has to be Ray Liotta"s Emmy-winning performance as a dying alcoholic which will reduce you to tears. When I first watched this season on television I was underwhelmed by it as a whole and so resisted buying the DVD. When I finally got around to it I found it not as poor as I had remembered. The episodes maintain a good standard of entertainment, whereas earlier seasons fluctuated between very good and mediocre episodes, each episode in this season is consistently entertaining if not as groundbreaking. There are still big stunts, characters to love and controversies to deal with - in short this is still ER. This DVD boxset has very few extras, just containing some deleted scenes. As with the other seasons the DVDs are duel-layered which I personally find hard to handle and maintain perfectly. The picture and sound quality is good though. Overall this DVD boxset is an enjoyable and strangely comforting watch.

  • Flashpoint
    Ross Johnston 07 Oct 2008

Having only seen a handful of Asian films such as Fearless and Hero I was more accustomed to historical sword fighting warriors than the contemporary Uzi toting triads. Having watched Flashpoint I feel like I've discovered a new genre, this is the definition of action.

Donny Yen is a hardened cop demoted for repeated assaults on criminals while his partner is undercover infiltrating a gang of Korean smugglers. Inevitably things go wrong, including a hilarious turkey bomb (probably best you find out for yourself). This is where the film really takes off with Donny Yen performing breathtaking mixed martial arts with some impressive gun play thrown in for good measure. This culminates in some of the most impressive 20 minutes of action cinema I have ever seen.

My only criticism would be the story, it's nothing new and at times feels unconvincing. However it is strong enough to facilitate the action which is the film's true draw.

  • The Happening [2008]
    Jevon Taylor 07 Oct 2008

I have never been a fan of Shyamalan"s films, but the nature of the mixed reviews surrounding "The Happening" really piqued my interest: It sounded like it broke the mold of disaster movies, with an aura of calm, not panic; the whole environmental angle was appealing; and the mystery of the disaster (one day in Central Park lose control over their actions, their train of thought before starting to kill themselves) intriguing. (And I"ve never had a problem with "boring" films; as a friend of mine says there are plenty of "great boring films".) All these things really are in the movies, and the movie looks good - he uses the American landscapes well, and dramatically. I like Mark Wahlberg too. However, there was something about the film that I didn"t like, the same reason I don"t really like other Shyamalan films - they aren"t really any fun. He seems to take his work too seriously, or perhaps thinks that other people aren"t as smart as him, and don"t really get his films. The "twist" at the end of "The Village" is a good example of this - kind of obvious, but delivered as though it was the end of "The Usual Suspects". He"s not the first person to contemplate nature taking its revenge on the abusive human race (numerous nuclear-interested Japanese monster movies and computer games attest to that), but makes his film like he is nonetheless. Despite this, the film is still good, possibly Shyamalan"s best since "The Sixth Sense", I can"t help liking it, and think that it is worth watching. (4/5)

  • The Edge Of Love [2008]
    Jevon Taylor 07 Oct 2008

"The Edge of Love": Dylan Thomas, good; Sienna Miller and Keira Knightly, not so sure. But then again, before I saw this film I knew little about Thomas"s life. The film follows the poet and writer"s "interesting" relationships with his heavy drinking Irish wife (Miller), their friend Vera (Knightly) and her husband (played by Cillian Murphy). The interests in these relationships are fuelled by historical rumour (apparently, rather than events, though the film does not approach them like rumour) - Vera had lost her virginity to Thomas as a teenager, was his lover during the war, and had a lesbian relationship with his wife. These rumours came to a head in real life when Vera"s husband returned from a stint with the army to find what appeared to be a ménage à trios between Thomas and the two women. This led to violence, trial and... I don"t want to disclose too much. So what do we have in this film? An exciting, sexy story about a great artist. Which is promising. What I particularly liked, however, was that Thomas and the other characters are not portrayed romantically, but emerge from the film as usually unsympathetic characters. The risk this runs is that some viewers, my self on occasion, although I like it, lose the dramatic thrust, sometimes drift, from the story as we cannot identify properly with anyone. I liked the film, but did not know much about Thomas beforehand, and am not sure whether I do now. Greater fans of the man may be more excited or dismayed by the film, but I can"t really tell which. I guess they will want to see it anyway. For the rest of us, however, I think that "The Edge of Love" offers an entertaining two hours. (3/5)

  • Spooks: Complete BBC Series 6
    nigel hodges 07 Oct 2008

This explosive series delivers edge of the seat viewing with ingenious if sometimes unbelievable storylines. Rupert Penry-Jones gives a brilliant fast paced performance along side Hermione Norris. If you enjoyed series 1-5, this series will not disappoint with its twisting story of MI-5 that weaves its way through the whole series, you will be tested all the way. Laughter, tears and an all to often a fundamental reality that is quite shocking with what is going on in the world today.

It also contains celebrity voices who include: Mel Gibson, Lucy Lawless, Gary Coleman, Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Britney Spears, Kid Rock, and Willie Nelson.

  • Sahara [1943]
    Michael Davies 05 Oct 2008

An Anglo-American cast, a thoughtfully written script and a well-balanced story, so what is the result? - A very good war movie!
It probably ranks as one of the best and most considered American war films Hollywood had made thus far (1943), which is quite remarkable when you consider that WWII was still being fiercely fought with the outcome far from being certain. It is amazingly restrained on the anti-German rhetoric and gives the Americans and British equal credit (no gung-ho "lets go and kick ass" American jingoism here).
Because the story is intelligent and balanced with characters you can actually believe in, the film has been able to stand the test of time exceptionally well.
Maybe it has got a touch of the boy"s own adventure about it when compared to today"s cynical standards, but the world was a different place then with faith and duty was genuinely put above personal ambition or survival.
All in all, it makes for a cracking movie and is well worth adding this DVD to your library collection.

  • Lost In Austen [2008]
    Cayleigh Shepherd 04 Oct 2008

A delightful four-part mini series which puts a spin on the classic story of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) is a modern day girl who is a keen fan of Austen's book, Pride & Prejudice. One night, whilst curled up reading the book, she discovers Elizabeth Bennett in her bathroom. Elizabeth shows her the secret door to her world, which Amanda ventures into, discovering the world of Pride & Prejudice, whilst Elizabeth is left in modern day London.
We follow Amanda's journey, which commences at the beginning of the novel, as she meets all the characters from the book, including the handsome Mr Darcy.

The reception of the show all depends upon the individual. Many Austen fans will despise the story, whilst others will enjoy every minute of it. Whether the story ends meeting your expectations remains to be seen. However, one thing everyone will agree on is the excellent writing.
Rooper is a strong lead, with the audience finding it easy to identify with her, and Hugh Bonneville is a wonderful Mr Bennett, who truly captures the essence of the character.

The DVD itself is nothing extraordinary. The four episodes plus a behind the scenes making-of featurette, split onto two DVDs. Fans of the show will notice the absence of a few moments from the TV series missing from the DVD, in which our protagonist, Amanda Price, sings Downtown to her hosts. Another element is the they have changed her mobile phone ringtone, which was originally the theme tune to the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice. The DVD itself does state in the small print that "certain scenes in this DVD version have been edited or deleted for copyright reasons". Although it doesn't really affect the storyline in any shape or form, it may however anger the most devout fans of the show.

Overall, a surprisingly enjoyable outing by ITV, which will leave all viewers wishing they could have had the same opportunity as Amanda, and travel into the world of Pride & Prejudice.
