Rob Zombies best film to date!

  • Romance And Cigarettes [2005]
anna gerald- williams 06 May 2006

This fantastic drama/comedy from Director John Turturro was over looked by many people the few months ago when it was released, and, after receiving some luke-warm reviews, it dissappeared, but this reception is entirely unworthy as, it has to be one of the most original and funny attempts at a musical released in the past few years. What with frenetic glamorous films like moulin rouge, and 'straight-from the theatre' films like chicago and rent due this summer, romance and cigarettes uses real actors with believable performances, puts a simple, heart-warming story in, and, with the use of some clever musical voice-over work, it makes for a genuine, entertaining, sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious piece of low-budget film that deserves a lot of praise.(In particular, Kate winslet's fantastic role as a fiery, red-headed, northern adultress, named Tula.) A dvd you must buy, it is good!

  • Six Feet Under - The Complete Fifth Season
    anna gerald-williams 06 May 2006

Having survived 4 seasons in the american ratings system, it is clear the type of quality that six feet under has come to be famous for. In this, the fifth and final year in the lives of the fisher family (The family of undertakers this series revolves around) one can honestly say that the writing, stories and performances are of the standard that all Tv series of this genre have been trying to re-create. With a wit and originality that still survives from the first ever series all those years ago, and a dream cast pulling in oscar-worthy performances, six feet under is still a truly worthy addition to any tv lovers collection, and, with this boxset being the last ever episodes of this much-loved show, it certainly is a must for dvd collectors.

  • King Kong [2005]
    William McGhee 06 May 2006

I have just simply rented this film so far, but it is my intention to buy the 2 disc version soon.
In general terms I would really recommend this movie to any action adventure fans,or any other interested movie watcher, however I have only a few minor criticsims or points of inaccuracy in it are as follows;-
1)The dinosaur action scenes verus King Kong are rather inaccurate,as the large and very heavy Sauropods could probably only manage at best 4 -5 mph, not the high speed stampede.
T rex would have most likely have won the fight between King Kong and himself. After his first bite into Kong's arm which would have serverd it, causing major shock and blood loss, and thereafter death after a short time, wherein T rex would then devour King Kong at leisure. It is also believed that T rex had a very high sense of smell (2 miles or more), and most likely the ability to sprint short distances at over 20 mph, no contest!
In my opinion the biplane flying sequences at the end of the movie are spoiled too. When the pilots and planes attack King Kong on top of The Empire State Building, the speed of the planes' flight has been speeded up too much in computer generated graphics for effect, sadly losing valuable realism to the closing scenes.
Although the movie is a little long at around three hours it is overall a very good movie with great character buildup and depth, could well become regarded as a classic one day.

    I hope I have helped.

  • Brokeback Mountain [2005]
    Michael Rutt 06 May 2006

Forget the obvious tagline that this is a "gay cowboy movie"
This stunning film is a heartbreaking and unforgettable testament to true love and one with which everyone of us can identify regardless of our own sexuality
Ravishingly photographed and intelligently acted "Brokeback Mountain" is destined to become a cult classic.
Ang Lee once again shows that he is a director of consummate sensitivity and truly deserves every accolade.
Heath Ledger has never been better and proves what a mature performer he now is , whilst Jake Gylenhaal exudes charisma and charm in an excellent performance.
In fact the audiences involvement becomes so achingly real that the film becomes that very rare being in todays cinema--an experience that stays in your mind long after the closing credits!
If you only buy a dozen titles this season then "Brokeback Mountain" belongs there right at the top of your list.
For sheer class and beautifully realized artistic achievement this film goes straight into my top ten titles of all time.

  • Underworld: Evolution [2006]
    Leon Finch 06 May 2006

Before you let all the magazines tell you how terrible this film is, just give it a try yourself and you might be pleasantly surprised!
You shouldnt really be expecting too much from this type of film anyway - just some good monsters, some good set-pieces and Beckinsale looking as good as she can. So it wont disappoint then....
Refreshingly gory in places and well worth a 3rd installment I say - bring it on...

  • Brokeback Mountain [2005]
    Leon Finch 06 May 2006

Yes it was robbed on Oscar night (but then so were many other films that never even made the shortlist), but it's not the film to enad all films!
It's a touching story, filmed with consistantly good performances and Lee's trademark postcard images.
You need to know what you are comfortable really - there's nothing much here to offend or outrage, just a little bit of man-action with a good tale wrapped around it. However, if you are the sort who still writes to Points of View about how filthy the world is these days, then stay away.
Whichever side you bat for, this film's a winner and well worth your time.

  • Everybody Loves Raymond - Series 3
    Mike Harmer 05 May 2006

Classic comedy. For those who haven't seen the show before, it's about the daily lives of Ray Barone (Ray Romano), his wife Debra Barone (Patrica Heaton) and their three children, Ally (Madylin Sweeten) and the twins Michael (Sullivan Sweeten) and Geoffrey (Sawyer Sweeten).
They just have one problem, Rays parents and older brother live across the street. Marie Barone (Doris Roberts) Rays mother is very controlling of both her sons and is very intrusive. Frank Barone (Peter Boyle) rays father, is always on his butt watching T.V. but he generally uses Rays T.V for the sake of it. Rays older brother Robert (Brad Garrett)is a in the NYPD(New York Police department) but he still lives with his parents. He is not very successful with women, except his on/ off relationship with Debra's friend Amy (Monica Horan).
Anyway back to the DVD. The new series three title sequence is the best bit. It makes me cry with hysterics every time it's shown on an episode and if the theme is that good, imagine how good the show is. Series 3, Episode 1: "The Invasion" was my personal favorite of the series; it opens the series with an episode to remember. Although it had no effect on the overall plot of the series, it was a good laugh and had Ray and Debra..... 'Being corrupted by the dark side' is one way of putting it and eventually getting Robert into trouble.
Other highlights of the series are 'Halloween candy', 'The Toaster' (I also would like to put in a good word for the interesting and insightful commentary to this episode by Phil Rosenthal an Ray Romano), 'Ping Pong', ' Cruising with Marie', 'Big Shots', 'Be Nice', 'Dancing with Debra', 'Robert Moves back' and 'How they met'(again with the good commentary stuff i said earlier). 'How they met' is the traditional episode where the characters look over their past, going into detail some of the key events that we never saw their lives. Back in series 1 we had 'why are we here' going back to the dreaded move to as ray would put it 'red zone' where they are now, series 2 brought us 'the wedding', giving us Ray and Debra"s happiest day of their life "supposedly", and 'how they met' is the story of, well.... how they met.
The DVD"s special features include the bloopers and deleted scenes and museum of television and radio discussion with cast and Phil Rosenthal. Don't want to spoil anything here so watch them.
Overall, looking back over the series, this is so far the best. The comedy is laugh out loud funny and it's everywhere in this very special and very recommended 4 disc DVD box set. So why not get it and share Rays pain with your family today.

  • Brokeback Mountain [2005]
    Paul Carre 03 May 2006

Dubbed as the "Gay Cowboy Movie" Brokeback Mountain is anything but. Upon watching this film you begin to look past the stereo typing of the media, to realise that this is a story of friendship and heartache, of denial and conflict and more importantly of love.
This story focuses on two guys who are herding sheep upon the mountain of the title. After some time they begin to realise their feelings for one another. Sadly this is in a time of repression and of homophobia so they have to keep their feelings a secret.
Over a twenty year period you see the trials that these two love struck people go through from convenient marriages to secret rendezvous".
Although the main characters are portrayed as cowboys they could just as well been car salesmen. Their profession does not play out as being a major part.
This film is both directed great and acted great by both the leads. Although, Ledger is more convincing than Gyllenhaal in the love scenes, which are filmed with great tact.
This critically acclaimed film has put Gyllenhaal on the map as one of Hollywood"s greatest young talents and I think we will be seeing him for a long time to come.
If you are in the mood for a real great story that will keep you gripped from start to finish then this is a must see. Turn the phones off and get the tissues out because you will be gripped from start to finish and you will feel that you have been on the journey with them.
Brokeback Mountain is just another piece of work that confirms Ang Lee"s directing talents.

  • Land of the Dead (2005)
    Simon Taylor 02 May 2006

    Land of the Dead.
The Fourth in George Romero's "Living Dead" series of films, that started with "Night of the Living Dead" back in 1968, see's the dead having completely over-run the world, and the last remanants of humanity living in a heavily defended city.
With the dead massing outside the city walls begining to evolve into a more intelligent species, humanities troubles are compounded when a rogue mercenary steals the militaries main battle tank, a vehicle named Dead Reckoning, and tries to hold the city to ransom.
But when the zombies break in and over run the cities defences, it becomes a race against time to get Dead Reckoning back and pacify the situation before civiisations last outpost becomes just another dead city.
Zombie film fans should love it. Althogh it lacks the "epic" feel of Romero's other zombie movies.

  • Family Guy, Series 1 [1999]
    Ian Taylor 02 May 2006

I can't believe they just said that and you won't believe you haven't bothered watching this before. A very funny animated family and in my honest opinion (whisper it) much funnier and more risque than The Simpsons. A psychotic baby with the voice of Rex Harrison (..DO they know what he's saying) a martini-swilling dog who's well read and educated and a father who isn't. Watch Peter, Lois, Meg, Chris and the rest now - you won't regret it

  • Shadowlands
    Yvonne Iversen 30 Apr 2006

Shadowlands is a true story about C.S.Lewis, the author behind The Chronicles of Narnia. Known as Jack, played by Anthony Hopkins, he teaches at Oxford College during the 1930s.
An American fan, Joy Gresham, played by Debra Winger, arrives with her son to meet Jack for tea in Oxford. Jack lets Joy stay in his house, which he shares with his brother. Jack and Joy develop a friendship, but the time comes when she has to go back to America. She's running away from an unfaithful and violent husband.
Eventually, Joy comes back to England after divorcing her husband, and settles down in London with her son. Jack and Joy then develop an ever closer and warmer friendship. Jack marries Joy "technically", so that Joy can stay in England. Jack then discovers exquisite happiness in later life through his marriage. When it turns out that Joy is struck by cancer, Jack's beliefs and new found fulfillment are shattered by Joy's struggle against an unexpected and devastating illness. But it is not untill then they actually get to talk things through, that they actually love each other. They decide to make the best of the time that is left. Like Joy puts it; We can't have the happiness of yesterday without the pain of today. That's the deal.
I will always remember Anythony Hopkins's (as Jack) last words in this movie, at the end; Why love, if losing hurts so much? I have no answers anymore: only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I've been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal.
A movie that touched me deeply, and I haven't cried so much over a film since I saw The Color Purple the first time. I don't know whether it's the story which is true, or the dramatisation, or the characters. I only know that I know how it feels, because I lost someone close myself in cancer. And I do recall the loneliness of this character Jack.

  • Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
    Paul Archer 29 Apr 2006

As usual Nick Park & co have excelled themselves. Easily the funniest of the Wallace & Gromit series. Plenty of laughs for the younger members of the family plus some more subtle adult references too - check out the "Bunny Girl" the 2 heroes put together on top of the car to draw out the were rabbit.
This is British animated comedy at its finest, the jokes - both visual & verbal are funny on many levels & without resorting to crudity.
Try to count all the sly references to other movies - it will take several viewings before you get them all!
    An absolute must have!

  • A Beautiful Mind [2002]
    Michael King 24 Apr 2006

John Forbes Nash Jr(Crowe) was not just an award winning mathematician he also suffered with schizophrenia. This biographical drama successfully contrasts his genius with his psychotic episodes. It is a heavyweight movie that requires concentration but rewards the patient viewer as the truth is revealed. The quality of the performances ensure that this movie is compelling viewing. A treat for serious movie fans.

  • Rushmore [1999]
    Michael King 23 Apr 2006

Writer/Director Wes Anderson may be better known for his next film "The Royal Tenenbaums" but this minor classic remains his finest work. 15 year old Rushmore academy student Max Fischer(Schwartzman) is too busy with extra-curricular activities to worry about being on academic probation, happy in his own world of bee-keeping, fencing and unforgettably the Max Fischer players amateur dramatic group. Life gets difficult for Max when he falls in love with teacher Miss Cross and asks his wealthy industrialist friend Herman Blume(Murray) for advice. Max introduces his friend to the woman he loves and is devastated when the 2 most important people in his life fall in love. Feeling betrayed Max seeks revenge on Herman with comic results. The performances particularly from Murray and Schwartzman are excellent and a host of memorable minor characters make for a movie that lingers long in the memory. This quirky comedy deals with big issues: love, loneliness, friendship and betrayal. A gem of a movie that is more enjoyable on each viewing.

  • Flightplan [2005]
    Graham Webster 23 Apr 2006

Kyle's (Jodie Foster) six year old daughter Julia (Marlene Lawston) has vanished without a trace aboard a state-of-the-art jumbo jet. There is no record of the girl ever being on board. In addition, apparently no passengers or members of the flight crew ever saw her (Foster's) daughter board the aircraft.
Flightplan is a well-planned thriller, it delivers on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense and well-constructed plot. Jodie Foster delivers a powerful performance. Not to be missed.

  • Miami Vice - Series 1
    Chris Hawthorne 23 Apr 2006

Fantastic series of crime fighting from two main cops and the rest of there team in the sunny Miami area.

  • The Ten Commandments [1957]
    Kashif 22 Apr 2006

Classic film which still stands up today almost half a century later; Chuck Heston plays the prophet Moses (peace be upon him); the abandoned Hebrew raised in the house Pharaoh, a loyal servant of Amun-Ra who ultimately rejects idolatry, embraces monotheism, warns those cruel Egyptian Cabbalists that their time is at hand, and to beware the wrath of God, but did they listen?...No, and its just as well, because then we wouldn"t have that awesome parting of the Red Sea effect which, unbelievably, still has the power to move an audience.
This is pure, old school Hollywood spectacle, awash with Technicolor and brimming with weighty proclamations, an all-star cast (including a brilliant turn by Yul Brynner as the proud Pharaoh Ramesees), larger than life characters and some wonderful bouts of method overacting. Most of the best extras on this release (including Demille"s intro to the film) can actually be found on the Re-mastered 40th Anniversary VHS, nonetheless, this is must for film buffs and even includes Demille"s 1923 silent version.
MOSES: "There is a beauty beyond the senses, beauty like the quiet of green valleys and still waters. Beauty of the spirit that you cannot understand."
Does he mean Hi-Definition Blu-Ray? Maybe, but until then, go forth into the wilderness and buy this awesome DVD, BY GOD, GO AND BUY IT I SAY!

  • The Notebook [2004]
    Marie Hawthorne 21 Apr 2006

The Notebook is simply beautiful. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are exceptional actors with such a talent to portray love in many different ways because it shows Noah and Allie fighting aswell as being completely in love. They show that love will come through in the end.
After reading the book I felt the film could not top it. But it certainly did and exceeded my expectations.
The film is extremely emotive and the ending emphasises this. Allie's disease is portrayed in a respectful and truthful way. There are moments of pure excellence like the scene in the lake with all the swans and the ending when James Garner and Gena Rowlands are lying in bed.
It hightlights that there is true love to be found for everyone and it proves that you should never give up on your love. The character of Noah was inspirational. He has such a fighting and kind spirit that I was left inspired and very emotional.
It is the most romantic film I have ever and I would recommend it to everyone because even my boyfriend enjoyed it. I recommended it to my friends and they loved it too.
It is a simple, classic romantic movie that will make you laugh and cry.

  • Friends: Complete Series 2 - New Edition
    Chris Hawthorne 20 Apr 2006

Very funny series including the episodes The Baby On The Bus, where Chandler and Joey leave Ben on the bus. The one with the list, where Ross makes a list comparing Rachel to his girlfriend. Five steaks and the eggplant, where Joey, Rachel and Phoebe all are short of money and Chandler gets a call from a girl looking for another guy. And finally the episodes where eddie moves in. Then Ross and rachel get together after all.
