The Stereophonics Live at Cardiff Castle is best summed up by one of the punters interviewed before the start of the show: "Theyre just a real band, arent they. Theres no rubbish going on--no nice haircuts or leather trousers. Theyre a proper band." More than that, they come across as indies answer to the classic power trio--assuming anyone remembers the question--belting out an amazing set to a 10,000 strong audience in the gorgeous grounds of Cardiff Castle on a glorious summers day in 1998. Fans will find all their favourites here, and the perfectly captured atmosphere is effectively the bands fourth member. On the DVD: Live at Cardiff on disc contains no sign of the "open and humorous interview" which, according to the back cover blurb, is supposed to be intercut with the concert footage. There is, however, a moment or two of pre-concert chat with various smug management and record company types who provide their smarmy appraisal of the band that pays their salaries. Just ignore them and enjoy the gig, which, in fact, is all there is on this 4:3 DVD anyway. There are no special features at all.--Roger Thomas
Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swivelling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice", "Baby, I Don't Care", "Don't Leave Me Now" and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. --Jeff Shannon

On 20 August 2005 on what would have been his 56th birthday a statue of Phil Lynott was unveiled in Dublin's Grafton Street by his mother. There to witness the event were members of Thin Lizzy from throughout the band's career. Later that evening they joined forces under the leadership of Gary Moore for a concert that paid tribute to Phil Lynott's memory. The core band of Moore Jethro Tull bass player Jonathan Noyce and Thin Lizzy's one and only drummer Brian Downey were joined by
The 1959 Newport Jazz Festival was a true musical watershed, as Jazz on a Summers Day reveals. This 75-minute film captures an event poised on the cusp of a new era, as the cool jazz of Jimmy Guiffre and the effortless scat of Anita ODay intermingle with the hard bop of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and the smouldering fusion overtones of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. Theres a crisp contribution from Chuck Berry, a typically feel-good set from Louis Armstrong--including a hilarious duo with Jack Teagarden--and, as evening shades into night, a heartfelt performance from Mahalia Jackson, closing with a melting rendition of "The Lords Prayer". Bert Stern has assembled all these and more into a satisfying sequence, complete with footage of an enthusiastic and informal audience. Shots of the yachting line-up from the Americas Cup round out a blissful and what now seems blissfully naïve occasion. On the DVD: Colour picture quality has worn well, whereas sound has deteriorated notably at times: Thelonius Monks quarter-tones could easily be a semitone flat! Even so, its worth putting up with this to enjoy a tour through music-making whose relaxed spontaneity would be impossible to emulate today. --Richard Whitehouse
