Sade Adu has always been a class act: Sade: Life Promise Pride Love assembles the videos for most of her early hits, from "Your Love is King" to "Love is Stronger than Pride". Collected together it is remarkable what a fine group of short films they are. She was always one of the few rock stars who could play the femme fatale of noir film convincingly, and later video clips where she plays the girl next door or rides horses are as convincingly healthy and open air as the earlier ones are claustrophobic and passionate. The swaying beats of her songs, the throaty delicate passion of her singing, the sheer beauty of her presence as a performer--all of these are well served by this excellent collection of videos. On the DVD: The DVD also features a bonus video, "By Your Side", filmed and recorded in 2000, a complete discography and biography of Sade and the lyrics of the songs as subtitles in English, French and Spanish. --Roz Kaveney
Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in country music history. His distinctive voice which neither sounded Nashville or Rock 'n' Roll was to score him over 100 hit singles in the USA and made him into one of Country's biggest stars of the 50s 60s and 70s.The legendary Sun Studios was the birthplace of Cash's career with his first single being released in 1955 his last release was 45 years later in 2000.Cash passed away in 2003 just four months after his wife and fellow songwriter June Carter died. This early recording of Johnny Cash shows his raw talent and earthy appeal. Look out for a rare display of humour with his parody of Elvis Presley on 'Heartbreak Hotel'.Performance Listing;01. It Was Jesus02. Suppertime03. All Over Again04. Give My Love To Rose05. There are so many astonishing facts about Maria Callas... First she was born not in Greece but in Manhattan and went to school there. Second considering her colossal influence and in contrast to the pumped-up preposterous overpaid pipsqueak divas of today her actual international career was tiny - 18 years at most. Third and in spite of her reputation her cancellation record was the lowest of any great singer of her day. Fourth she rarely looked at the conductor during an opera simply because she could not see him - she was very short-sighted and often appeared (partly as a result) to be in a trance while on stage. Fifth she was betrayed by most of those intimate with her throughout her life and eventually abandoned by many of those who should have known better and who claimed to have loved her. Sixth she died almost penniless - even her grotesquely rich long-time lover Onassis whose marriage to Jackie Kennedy she only discovered by watching the 6 o'clock news had invested her money in half a cargo boat which sank. Paradoxically although she died 30 years ago her records today outsell every other recorded classical artist and single handedly keep EMI Classics afloat. Last hers was not the most beautiful voice of her time as she frequently admitted. Some days it worked; other days it just didn't. In the end those who met her in Paris in the seventies agree that she was one of the loneliest most desperate of women they had ever encountered slowly drugging herself to death. Every day thank God is one day less she told Di Stefano. A summons to tea (for half an hour at most) often lasted until the early hours with the guest or guests pleaded with not to leave. It was pathetic and horrible but it was Callas. It was always Callas and that was the secret and the magic. We witness on stage a broken woman who sings nakedly from her heart about herself and her life who acts with such incredible power and unashamed truth that we stagger back before what we know in our hearts is all of her. No artifice here; no vulgar posturings to which her absurd imitators - and there are many - aspire. Gheorghiu Battle Garrett - they cannot touch her hem. Maria - just a woman who often spoke of Callas in the third person in trouble asking begging sometimes for our understanding and our love. She deserves it because there was no greater singing actress in our time. And she was only 53 when she died.

Just as James Brown commanded the stage at Harlem's Apollo theatre 20 years previous so Daryl Hall and John Oates took to the very same stage in 1983 producing a similarly captivating and soul-packed show. Performing a powerhouse of songs from their first ever 'best-of' the duo tore through 16 of their greatest numbers - including four from 1982's H20 album. From the flirtatious 'Italian Girls' and the moody 'Art Of A Heartbreak' to the jubilatory 'Maneater' and 'Private Eyes' what we witness on this DVD is essentially two men (aided and abetted by four of the tightest musicians in town) at their peak which betrays a duo as skilled in close soul harmonies as they were (and are) at rocking. Tracklisting: 1. Family Man 2. Diddy Doo Wop 3. Italian Girls 4. Kiss On My List 5. She's Gone 6. Art Of Heartbreak 7. One On One 8. You've Lost That Lovin Feeling 9. I Cant Go For That 10. Kylie's back with Fever--Live in Manchester and both the budget and the bangles are bigger than 2001's Live in Sydney. This is very much a new-wave pop concert, combining the best in visual imaging, storytelling and costume design. We are offered a range of stunning Kylie-personas, from Metropolis Queen (an ingenious mechanical silver costume) for the opening "Come into My World", to Clockwork Orange-style aggression for "Spinning Around" and a hip hop-infused policewoman for "Confide in Me". Most impressive are "GBI", a stunning piece of avant-garde Japanese pop, and the electro-clash section for "Light Years". (Unfortunately there's little she can do with "Lucky", since the original is imprinted on our brains forever!) Take note, all pop star wannabes: part of Kylie's success can be attributed to her refusal to mime, and her concerts are all the better for it. The other part can be seen in the canny way she has surrounded herself with the best in the business, from her stylist to her choreographer to her stage director. If that's not enough, her stage persona is a knockout too. She easily commands the audience's attention and, despite her diminutive size, dominates the hugely elaborate set that combines stairs and movable video projections. This is as much a piece of performance art as it is a big-budget pop concert. It appears that audiences are now ready for the grown-up Kylie she wanted to give the world nearly 10 years ago. On the DVD: Kylie: Fever's special feature on the stage projections is a little dull out of context but hypnotic nonetheless: it's ideal for playing on a loop at a party! The digital programme presents the story behind each look and chapter of the concert and the documentary doesn't just focus on the lady herself, but diverts to look at the logistics and problems in creating such a visually stunning show. As you would expect from such a mixed-media production, the sound and visuals are pristine. --Nikki Disney

Betty Grable and June Haver star as the Dolly sisters who sang and danced their way into the hearts of vaudeville audiences in New York and Paris. Jenny (Grable) and Rosie (Haver) Dolly were a dancing sensation before the first World War. Shadowing their success was noted dancer-composer Harry Fox (John Payne) who carried a torch for Jenny. A romance develops between Jenny and Harry that seems unstoppable as does Rosie's romance with department store owner Irving Netcher (Frank Latimore) but both relationships will be tested in ways none of them could have imagined.
