From Here To Eternity: Director Fred Zinnemann's 1953 Oscar-winning best picture 'From Here To Eternity' is a powerful portrait of a peacetime military camp stationed in Hawaii just before the attack on Pearl Harbour. Montgomery Clift is superlative in the major role of Robert Prewitt while Frank Sinatra delivers an electrifying Academy Award-winning (1953 Best Supporting Actor) performance as Clift's buddy. Deborah Kerr's love scene in the Hawaiian surf with Burt Lancaster is enshrined as one of the most famous moments in cinema history. (Dir. Fred Zinnermann 1953) Pal Joey: A cabaret entertainer lands in San Francisco determined to make it big but scores his biggest hits with a wealthy socialite and a chorus line cutie! Features a classic Rogers and Hart score including 'The Lady Is A Tramp' 'There's A Small Hotel' 'I Could Write A Book' and 'My Funny Valentine.' (Dir. George Sidney 1957) Young At Heart: Barney Sloan (Frank Sinatra) is a cynical down-on-his-luck musician who reluctantly agrees to help his composer friend Alex Burke (Gig Young) with a new comedy he is working on. However Barney gains a new perspective on life and love when he meets Alex's irrepressibly perky fiancee Laurie (Doris Day) - and promptly falls in love with her! A musical remake of the 1938 film 'Four Daughters' with Sinatra offering definitively gloomy renditions of 'Someone to Watch Over Me' and 'One More for My Baby' before Day manages to put a smile on his face featuring a superb score written by Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin (Dir. Gordon Douglas 1954) Higher And Higher: Formerly rich Mr. Drake is broke...with his household staff's wages seven months in arrears. Conniving valet Mike O'Brien hatches a scheme to pass off scullery maid Millie as Drake's debutante daughter and net a rich husband for the benefit of all. But all kinds of complications romantic and otherwise intervene... (Dir. Tim Whelan 1943)

  • Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Watch My Lips [2003]Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Watch My Lips | DVD | (01/12/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Watch My Lips is essentially a video record of the culmination of Britpop girl singer Sophie Ellis Bextor's 2002 tour. It successfully mines the seam of hits spawned by her Read My Lips album and of course, "Groovejet", her mesmerising collaboration with DJ Spiller. Bextor's ironic interpretation of the role of the pop princess, a native musical intelligence and a host of influences from Blondie's guitar-driven rock circa 1979 to Moby are a potent combination which help to underline the breadth of her appeal. From the moment the anthem "Sparkle" hits home, the audience at the Shepherd's Bush Empire clearly adores her even if, for all her constantly proclaimed love of dancing, Bextor's stagecraft and between-songs patter are sometimes limited to the point of being static and clichéd. "Murder on the Dancefloor", "Groovejet", the tenderly joyful "Is It Any Wonder" and the empowering "Move This Mountain" are the highpoints of the set and reveal where Bextor's strengths as a writer of sophisticated, danceable songs currently lie. But the accompanying interview suggests she is still in the foothills of her ambitions; there is enough grit, lynx-eyed determination and focus to see her through the multiple reinventions she'll need to build a lasting career on her initial success. Watch this space. On the DVD: Watch My Lips is presented in widescreen with a Dolby Digital 5.1 mixed soundtrack that emphasises two things: the attention paid to reproducing a highly electronic studio sound in a live concert and the fact that Bextor really can sing, in an aloof, post-Deborah Harry way. Extras include interview and tour diary material, promo videos for five tracks from Read My Lips and, for curiosity value, promos from Bextor's apprenticeship with indie group The Audience. --Piers Ford

  • Slayer - War At The Warfields [2003]Slayer - War At The Warfields | DVD | (28/07/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

God hates us all" is the cheery message delivered by heavy metal mongers Slayer during War at the Warfields, and with their emphasis on themes such as violence and death, Satanism and necrophilia, this is clearly not a band that will appeal to fans of, say Kenny G. Still, it's a safe bet that none of the thousands who crammed into San Francisco's Warfield Theatre in December 2001 to scream, thrash, mosh and headbang for this 90-minute show went home unhappy. But then, why would they? Loud, fast, ultra-aggressive, relentlessly anti-melodic music doesn't come any harder than this; Slayer's energy is undeniable, as is the catharsis they provide their fans. And if the band (at least bassist-singer Tom Araya) seems to take it all a tad less seriously than their young, hollow-eyed, nihilistic adherents (many of whom are interviewed in a 50-minute documentary featured in the DVD bonus material), well, that's show biz. --Sam Graham
