Celebrated as one of the most influential musicians of his generation Nat King Cole blazed a trail for other black entertainers - even as he waged his own personal sometimes controversial battle against the specter of racism. A minister's son who found his vocation not in the pulpit but at the keyboard Nat King Cole quickly became the foremost jazz pianist of the 1940's. But it was his smooth as velvet voice that launched him to worldwide fame at a time when being black and famous

  • Diana Krall - Live In MontrealDiana Krall - Live In Montreal | DVD | (29/11/2004) from £9.09   |  Saving you £5.90 (39.40%)   |  RRP £14.99

Diana Krall: Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival is a portrait of an already-accomplished musician in the process of evolving into a great artist. Always a fine jazz pianist, an expressive singer, and a capable interpreter (mostly of the Great American Songbook), Krall spent little time developing an original voice prior to her marriage to Elvis Costello and her CD The Girl in the Other Room, which features multiple songwriting collaborations with Costello as well as more adventurous choices in cover material (Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow", Tom Waits's "Temptation"). That 2004 recording is the centerpiece of this concert; fully nine of the 13 selections here, including the Waits and Mitchell songs as well as five Costello-Krall compositions, were drawn from it. Purists may lament the lessening of the straight-ahead jazz element in Krall's music (indeed, with its simple major chords and countryish lilt, the original "Narrow Daylight" will inevitably invite comparisons to Norah Jones). But Krall and her excellent band still swing mightily (cf. an extended version of the standard "All or Nothing at All") and improvise like the seasoned jazz pros they are. It's a heady combination: Krall is at least as good an instrumentalist as her contemporaries; add to that her singing and now an interest in songwriting that reflects the influence of pop music as well as jazz, and you have a genuinely unique talent. --Sam Graham

  • The Allman Brothers Band - Live At The Beacon TheatreThe Allman Brothers Band - Live At The Beacon Theatre | DVD | (12/05/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

It takes an aircraft-carrier of a release such as Live at the Beacon Theatre to remind us just how unique the Allman Brothers Band always was and still is. Traditionally a byword for down-home R&B/country blues-rock, the reality is that the band's gigantic sound is almost a musical form in itself. Make no mistake, the Allmans are still making big music, now with a two-guitar front line as well as their trademark two-drummer rhythm section (augmented these days with an additional percussionist), plus Gregg Allman's Hammond cutting through all of this like a serrated knife. The only anomaly is his voice, which has always had a strange, recessed quality, as though he sings without actually breathing. That said, his vocal style is a distinctive element of what the band's all about, so hey. This release offers a massive set filmed in New York in March 2003 which is chock-full of things you'll need to hear (especially "Desdemona" and "Whipping Post"). The concert footage alone lasts about three hours and the whole thing is immaculately produced without detracting from the atmosphere of the event in any way. Never mind the ponytails, the Allmans give you the whole pony. On the DVD: Live at the Beacon Theatre two-disc set has generous extras that turn what was already a good deal into a veritable bargain. The lengthy interview material gets off to a shaky start by focusing at embarrassing length on how much more sober and generally together the band is than it used to be, but when the apologies are over we get some genuine insights into both the personalities and the music involved. There's also behind-the-scenes and rehearsal footage (much of which is both funny and poignant) and a photo gallery. The DVD is in 4:3 aspect ratio and has stereo, Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1 sound options. --Roger Thomas

  • Janet Jackson - Live In Hawaii [2002]Janet Jackson - Live In Hawaii | DVD | (01/12/2008) from £8.04   |  Saving you £8.21 (121.09%)   |  RRP £14.99

As Live in Hawaii highlights, Janet Jackson loves taking her clothes off in front of the cameras. On top of the eight costume changes, the cameras have "access all areas" privileges and follow Janet as she dashes off stage to change. These shots aren’t particularly insightful, but will nevertheless appeal to her male fans. With a massive stage, amazing special effects, and a huge crew of supporting artistes the show is a typical grand Jackson concert affair. Following another American mega pop star tradition, where concerts are themed fairy tale-style around "dreams" or "fantasies", the "All For You" show is supposedly located in an "alternative universe". However, it’s not a particularly radical cosmos, with one act set in a candy store (for "Runaway"), featuring Jackson dressed as a pixie. Perhaps being in another universe explains why Janet appears particularly distant from her audience, with very little interaction going on between her and the crowd. The age-old question is she or isn’t she singing live also seems particularly relevant for this show. You decide. With tracks included from all her solo albums, this concert provides a pleasurable voyage through her greatest hits On the DVD: Live in Hawaii presents colourful and glossy footage restricted to standard 4:3 format. The sound track, though, is offered in three different formats (Dolby Digital Stereo; Dolby Digital 4.1 and DTS). On top of the attractive menus, there’s a ten-minute interview with Janet, a three-minute photo gallery of shots from her concert programme, and a bizarre compilation of Miss Jackson performing "Would You Mind" at different concert venues.--John Galilee

The Voice comes from far away. But he does not understand what is being said. But the tone of it was clear beautiful and pure. Like shimmering fibers of light the sound seduced him. He had never experienced such a sense of warmth. No sound had ever touched him as this one had. Was it day or night? Over and over the same voices. They banded together upon a floating rhythm to create a choir. The light within him began to move. The warmth roamed. Always faster. It took possession of him. Everything became one. Was it God? The shafts of light the heat and the sound meld together. 'Pass the frontiers' a voice calls to him. 'Your journey in life begins'. Only now he notices that no one spoke rather it was himself. • Welcome To Death Row [2001]Welcome To Death Row | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Welcome to Death Row tells the unauthorised history of the most notorious rap label ever. And what a story it is, with enough blood and betrayal to satiate the Borgias and machinations that would make Machiavelli proud. The rise and fall of Death Row and its power-hungry CEO, Marion "Suge" Knight, makes The Godfather look like a bedtime story. The film centres on the testimony of Michael Harris--also known as "Harry O", as in octopus, because he had his business fingers in so many pies--who provided Suge Knight with the seed money to set up Death Row, and assigned his lawyer David Kenner to oversee the label's business affairs. The film traces the entire controversial history of the label, which at its height was turning over $500 million a year, and the impact it had on not only the music industry but American culture. "It was like working in a prison", says Doug Young, the label's record promoter, of Suge Knight's predilection for hiring gangsters and ex-felons. The film also details the relationship between Death Row and its biggest star, Tupac Shakur, and the effect that Shakur's sudden death in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting had on the label's fortunes (a story told in greater depth in Savidge's film Thug Immortal).Although none of the major players in this drama are represented on tape--Dr Dre and Interscope Records heads Jimmy Iovine and Ted Fields are as conspicuous by their absence as lawyer David Kenner and Suge Knight, the villains of the piece--the producers have unearthed an alarming number of believable behind-the-scenes sources including record promoters, managers, private investigators and former associates and employees of the label. Director Savidge wisely uses talking heads to tell his story, weaving into it a wealth of archive material and previously unseen home-video footage. The epic narrative is split into discrete chapters but, with so much information and opinion flying about, at times the chronology of events becomes confused. Yet this does little to spoil a documentary that goes a long way to revealing the intimate connection between the music industry and organised crime, and the desire for power and glory that drives them both.On the DVD: As if there wasn't enough information to digest in the documentary (which is presented in a clean 1:85.1 anamorphic format), the extra features on the DVD provide even more supplementary evidence. There are outtakes from the interviews used in the main feature, as well as additional interview footage of Snoop Dogg and Harry O. There is uncensored security camera footage of a fight in the lobby of the MGM Grand involving the Death Row entourage that preceded the death of Tupac Shakur by minutes, a music video for "Deep Cover" (the song that launched Snoop Dogg) and a fascinating audio commentary by director Savidge and producers Jeff Scheftel and Stephen A Housden, in which they relate the difficulties encountered in obtaining the trust of those they interviewed and the factors they took into consideration when constructing the film. Savidge recalls that the model they had in mind was the fractured, multi-perspective narrative of Kurosawa's Rashomon. --Chris Campion

  • VH-1 Storytellers - Billy Idol [2001]VH-1 Storytellers - Billy Idol | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

VH-1's Storytellers series has brought a number of stars back into the limelight and, nine years since his last album, Billy Idol was ready for the re-focus. His music and image were always the perfect synthesis of 1950s rock & roll and 70s punk, giving his songs an enduring appeal. Here he takes a number or two to get going, but from "Flesh for Fantasy" onwards, this is a greatest hits package high on entertainment and musicianship. Steve Stevens, whose gritty yet intricate guitar gave the first three Idol albums their edge, is on hand, as is a backing-band which catches the mood of each song unerringly. Highlights include stripped-down versions of "White Wedding" and "Rebel Yell", an electro-acoustic rethink of the soulful "Eyes Without a Face"--a candidate for the perfect pop song?--and a sprinkling of songs by Generation X who, along with The Buzzcocks, were always the Pop Punk band of choice. Idol introduces several of the songs with street-wise bonhomie. The sneer may have lessened over time, but the attitude hasn't faded. On the DVD: Storytellers--Billy Idol on disc has a 4:3 picture format that captures the relaxed atmosphere, with Dolby Digital 5.1, 2.0 and DTS surround sound options. Thirty-two access points enable you to select the music without the chat, with subtitles in five European languages. The artist profile is brief but to the point and reproductions of album covers liven up the discography. Questions from the audience--a frequent Storytellers slot--are excluded, but it's a small omission. --Richard Whitehouse
