The Winner Takes It All--The ABBA Story reflects the peaks and troughs of the Swedish supergroup's popularity over the decades, as well as the quartet's turbulent years together. Initially labelled as just another trashy Eurovision act following their win with "Waterloo" in 1974, the group confounded their critics by emerging as a credible musical team with superior songwriting abilities. Following a few years of mass adoration the punters got tired, and for most of the 1980s the group, along with their fans, were forced into years of hibernation and denial. Luckily a new dawn rose in the early 1990s with the emergence of ABBA tribute bands such as Bjorn Again, the appropriation of the group's music in the movies Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding, and the global success of the ABBA Gold greatest hits collection. This documentary successfully manages to piece together both the public and private side of the group, through the use of interview excerpts and video footage. The DVD also contains exclusive interviews with all four members of the band for the first time since their split. Reflecting on the intricate nature of their music, as well as the elevation of their compositions to the heady heights of pop classics, the documentary concludes with behind-the-scenes footage of preparations for the ABBA-inspired West End stage show Mamma Mia!. This is a must for all ABBA fans, as well as those wishing to discover the heritage of one of the world's greatest pop groups. On The DVD: although boasting 30 minutes of extra footage, interviews and music, this release is basically an extended version of the television documentary (of the same name) broadcast in 1999. The DVD version of the programme has been segmented into 20 chapters, labelled with names of classic ABBA tunes, which reflect the themes of particular parts of the narrative. Unfortunately all of the additional DVD footage has been subsumed into the documentary and cannot be accessed individually. There are no other extra DVD features (not even subtitles), and the main menu only allows access to the individual chapters. --John Galilee

Texas Paris is a visual record of some of the group's best tunes played live, along with the original promotional videos. Unlike most bands who are usually never even given one chance to make it big, Texas were lucky enough to be given multiple opportunities to become successful. Despite securing a Top 10 hit in 1989, with "I Don't Want a Lover" it wasn't until seven years later, riding on the crest of the Brit-pop phase that the group were to gain long-term popularity. The concert in Paris has added significance, because of the cult 1984 Wim Wenders film Paris, Texas a favourite film of both Sharleen and Johnny and the motivating factor for their choice of the band name. The concert footage is shot superbly well, and has real atmosphere--you feel that you're at the Palais de Bercy rather than at some characterless out-of-town arena in the southeast of England. The electricity of this recording is stirred up further by Spiteri's excellent rapport with the audience, and her amazing stage and vocal performances. The selection of songs and running order is well balanced, with the concert kicking off with their more up-tempo tunes such as "Black Eyed Boy", descending down a notch or two to their slower numbers ("Tired of Being Alone" and "So In Love With You") and then climaxing with favourites such as "Say What You Want". Although she fails to don the latex mask and the stick on side-burns, clad in leather Sharleen's live performance of "Inner Smile" is almost as good (and Elvis-like) as the infamous promotional video for this track. On the DVD: The disc is jam-packed with both the excellent concert footage and videos. Both the concert tracks and the promotional videos can be accessed individually or played together. For DVD-ROM users there are also two exclusive Texas screen-savers. Coming across a tad arrogant in such footage, the DVD also includes a previously unseen interview with Sharleen Spiteri, which covers issues ranging from the group's formation to their recent global success. There's also exclusive live film of Sharleen's acoustic performance at Madonna's February 2001 concert at Brixton Academy, London. --John Galilee
A DVD accompaniment to their greatest hits album, International Supervideos collects together American punk rockers Green Day's entire visual history to date. Now something of the elder statesmen of the movement, the compilation starts with tracks from their breakthrough major label debut Dookie and brings us up to date with the Warning album and its three singles. While their music has always stuck fairly close to the three-minute punk-pop template, the band have explored the video medium well. Managing to avoid the clichéd live performance approach, the majority of the clips instead place the band in various environments, from a mental hospital (the excellent "Basket Case") to the clever sports pastiche of "Nice Guys Finish Last". Ironically, the best track of the lot is the one that owes nothing to their usual influences, the emotive, acoustic "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)". With this willingness to step outside of there own parameters and the later material easily equal to the best of their career, International Supervideos is not only an essential purchase but one that hints at a bright future for the band. On the DVD: While punk rock isn't always about sound quality and clarity, International Supervideos is blessed with hi-fi crispness, providing an equally satisfying aural and visual experience. The almost cartoonish, Day-Glo quality of many of the videos is enhanced by the picture quality. Extras, however, are at a frustrating minimum. There's a web link, chapter selection and a subtitle facility, at last helping to make sense of Billie Joe's less than defined lyrics. --Phil Udell
