While the stars of this film are indeed famous names and relatively good actors they seem to have been given little to no direction in this film. There is also a lack of any real atmosphere or actual care put into the production.
A more important fact is the strong resemblence to the plot of a cult film " Repo The Genetic Opera " a 2008 film which has the premise of, guess what, the repossession of organs.
I would consider this to be a one watcher, though a rentable one at that and not to buy.
Repo....ff Men
The final episode of the Toy Story trilogy, Toy Story 3, is due for release on DVD this month. The film, produced by Pixar Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, was directed by Lee Unkrich a major contributor to the making of the first two films.
The voice-overs are once again charmingly provided by a whole host of highly regarded celebrities: Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Other big names include Estelle Harris, John Ratzenberger and Wallace Shawn plus many more from the previous films. Some additional characters have been written into the new script this time and their voice-overs include the likes of Michael Keaton, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Garlin and Timothy Dalton to name but a few.
The story opens with 17 year old Andy packing his things ready for his first day at college. Most of the toys are destined for storage in the attic but he decides to take Woody with him. The toys mistakenly wind up at the Sunnyside Day-Care Centre for toddlers where things start to become very dark and sinister indeed. The friends have to deal with rejection, evil dolls, imprisonment and cruelty not forgetting the menacing Lotso Bear (head of the Day-Care Centre toys). There are chase scenes and suspenseful escapes as Woody (who gets reprogrammed at least twice) comes to rescue them.
Some say the film is satirical; particularly with regard to the humorous Barbie and Ken storyline, and a number of reviewers have actually gone so far as to say there are threads of communist dictatorship, slavery, capitalism, brainwashing and unemployment running through the narrative! Others have even drawn parallels with the Holocaust.
In short the film has something for everyone, adults or children alike, would-be philosophers or simply those of you who just really enjoy a jolly good story.
Toy story 3 is due for release on 22/11/2010 so put your name down for a copy asap!
Verdict
Bones series three, if you've seen the other series then this continues along the same vein. With David Boreanaz playing Booth a tough yet tender F.B.I. agent with a military past who just wants to stop the bad guys, teamed up with Dr. Temperance Brennan known as Bones played by Emily Deschanel who is an forensic anthropologist who in series one just wanted to be left out of the murders but now appears to enjoying playing the sidekick to Booth. There is also a sidekick team to Bones who with their own personal lives and relationships are there just to add some interest.
Basically they've teamed up to solve murders together by looking at the bones of the deceased and then working together with the evidence to discover the truth, which invariably they always do,whilst along the way Bones tries to educate Booth and Booth tries to make Bones 'more human'. Yawn I hear you say, it's all been done before, good cop teams up with pretty side kick to save the day. Well it's a bit more than that let me say, it's funny, sad, humerous and each episode is a mini story in itself but still manages to move the main story lines along at a good pace. The yuck factor is always apparent and it amazes me how much Bones can actually glean from looking at, well, Bones - especially as it's based on a real life anthropologist and therefore what she does is based in reality. Bones in the series is so highly intelligent that real life seems to pass by her understanding which makes for some great comedic moments, particularly withher interaction with the new psychologist who appears in this series, and who she doesn't rate particularly highly - seen as he looks about 12 and it's all head 'stuff'. Booth and Bones relationship continues to be settled at a simmering attraction but always held at bay as they don't feel able to give into their passions despite the desperation for them to do so by colleagues and audience alike, and in 'the baby in the bough' when Bones discovers what it is like to care for an "infant" it almost feels as if they have become a family unit and what might be...
The usual gross factors are there - don't watch this whilst eating unless you have a strong stomach - particularly 'boy in the time capsule', wathcing them pulling gooey body parts out of a big tin can just doesn't make dinner go down well but hey they do try to make it realistic.
The supposed shocking ending to the show about who it was going to be although was partially unexpected wasn't completely unexpected which was a real shame, however the biggest disappointment was the manner in which the ending felt so rushed mostly due to the writers strike in America which was happening at the time and therefore they fitted it in as quick as possible and just didn't somehow seem to finish right. Although it was good to have the continuing theme running through and popping up in episodes every so often, I personally will really miss .... (don't want to spoil it for you) and the character they portrayed - although it will allow the introduction of some variety into the show in the future. The other problem which came out of the writers strike was that although this set costs as much as the other dvd sets but with half the episodes (3 actually come from season 4 to try and bulk it out!) which is why it gets knocked down to four stars.
In summary though if you like murder mysteries definately get this, and all the other seasons as well if you can as it is worth watching over and over again. Enjoy!
Bones- a hot F.B.I. agent and anthropologist who team up to solve murders, a drama dark at times and with a comedic element also - more entertaining than it sounds!
Someone told me they found "I Love You Phillip Morris" one of the most offensive films they'd ever seen. In fact, they left the cinema within half an hour, the cinema to which they'd paid good money and perused mountains of extortionate pick 'n' mix in order to see it. The thing that puzzled me most about this was that the film was based on true events! Not to say that some of the content isn't (hilariously) crude or vastly derogatory to the gay community, so people with sensetive ears or those amongst us who are a little more naive (ok, now I'm just being mean) might in fact just find the urge to storm out of Cineworld, pick 'n' mix clasped firmly in hand. But the very picture this film paints of the homosexual community is, in the most part, a true one. It's flamboyant, it's colourful, relentlessly promiscuous and fully willing to make fun of itself... so laugh along yeah?!
I honestly thought it was brilliant, such a remarkable and hilarious story, and great to see Jim Carrey back on form. Ewan McGregor takes on the fairly tough role of Phillip Morris, but pulls it off without a hitch and the pair of them even lock lips for a considerable time, which is pretty bizarre to see actually, but all credit to them. It was a joy to watch, and not only genuinely funny but honestly very (and quite surprisingly) emotional. An all-round thumbs up.
Ps. if you think you might actually be offended by the sight of Jim Carrey mincing around in leather hot pants, camper than a row of pink tents, this might not be the film for you.
Absolutely amazing. must buy !!
As a fan of House and soon to be medical student, my parents decided that this boxset would be a suitable gift, and could be argued as somewhat educational. The day I received it was a dangerous one indeed. Episode after episode after episode were watched at alarming rates (My record being 17 episodes in one day). Yet, even after this somewhat dangerous House binge, the show has not lost one drop of the charm it had in episode number 1. Yes, I have an interest in medical things, and the medicine behind the show interested me greatly, but that's not what makes House so enjoyable. Rather, the cleverness of the writing and the superb acting, not just from Hugh Laurie but the rest of the central cast and various guest performances, makes the show interesting every time.
I guarantee that if you have any interest in medicine, or television in general, you won't regret the journey to Princeton Plainsboro.
This film, for me, has set the benchmark of CGI/human interaction. The 'prawns' blend flawlessly with their surroundings and the actors involved with them perform brilliantly.
The storyline is sound however the documentary style of filming seems lost on the second half of the film 'I won't ruin it for any readers,' but the perspectives seem muddled.
I don't think I noticed any poor acting on any part and the realism of the situation was portrayed beautifully by Sharlto Copley amongst others.
All in all I have given this film a 4 star rating simply because of the muddled perspectives, it would be a 4.5 if possible as the rest of the film is spot on.
An alien spaceship hovers above Johannesburg, underneath a slum of stranded alien 'prawns' is created by the government in order to contain the influx of these alien entities. The film follows Wikus Van De Merwe, a government representative of Johannesburg within the extra terrestrial field as he struggles to move the residents of district 9 into a new holding facility.
Before i watched this film i was expecting it to be really hiliarous and something i would enjoy as it was recomned to me by a friend, but as i watched it i didnt think it was exactly brillant but i didnt think it was bad at all! It wasnt as funny as i was expecting it to be, but it was definitly funny in some bits and you felt sympathy additionally to some chracters in the film. I thought the acting was good although Taylor Swift wasnt to bad but she wasnt the best of actresses ive ever come across, but i still found her funny. I would still recomd this film becuase its a good chick flick that some people would enjoy.
A fantastic interpretation of this lewis caroll tale. Visually superb and great characterisation, Jonny Depp is particularly good as the mad hatter. An imaginative and dark yet funny must see.
A perfect start to a much anticipated sequel, straightforward not giving too much but just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. As the movie progresses there is so much excitement built up that you personally feel part of the story. The climax of the movie explodes your mind as well as a few buildings. The story comes together so well it, as with the first movie, leaves you wanting more and more.
Downey Jr returns in the lead role, playing the eccentric Tony Stark, again like a cocky spoiled
child with an entire company at his disposal. Downey Jr plays Stark in a serious yet free spirited way, who is so patronizingly clever he is just charming. Luckily he has Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) as his assistant/minder to make sure he's not killing himself. Paltrow's character, less attractive this time around, seems more serious than Iron Man 1, due to the extra responsibility left to her by the erratic Stark.
Mickey Rourke, taking on the role of Russian Ivan Vanko convincingly, actually has a pretty good Russian accent for an American guy. In a complete character contrast to his role in The Wrestler, he plays an endearingly vulnerable evil scientist seeking revenge. The only person to outsmart Tony Stark, he is a villain this movie cannot go without.
About Scarlett Johanssen; she is striking in her role, not much screen time/speaking time but she gives a decent performance nonetheless. Although she does lead the best sequence in the movie, kicking Jon Favreau's behind!
Don Cheadle, replacing Terrence Howard from the first movie, plays his role better than expected. A perfectly supportive, guiding friend for Stark, the only other person, aside from Pepper Potts, who could put up with his crazy ways.
Also a very stereotypical Samuel L Jackson performance in the minor but important role to set the movie in motion.
Explosions, lasers, rockets, androids and, of course, Iron Man. The visual graphics are superb, they really make the movie worth watching, almost using ever special effect at their disposal.
The soundtrack of the movie: AC-DC - nuff' said! Oh and The Clash, Queen, Daft Punk and The Beastie Boys, showcasing a good number of different music genres. The sound editor proved himself again to be a brilliant composer.
A few final movie notes: Stan Lee's version of 'Where's Wally?' Where is Stan Lee?
Also, did you remember to watch till the end of the credits?? That's how Marvel works.
This film does what it says on the tin, quite a bit of action, a good twist, and a couple of stomach churning gratuitous organ removals, guaranteed to make the squeamish leave! Jude Law was good, although don't expect any nomination worthy performances. Special effects I thought were great. What did surprise me was the production quality of the blu-ray. The usual preview adverts were preceded by an announcement that it was downloading up to date reviews. Call me a geek, but this made me watch them intently, with no real idea whether I was watching something on the disk or something being streamed. The production quality of the disk, the previews, the menus and the film itself are excellent. Overall a good fun flick, I probably won't watch it again, although maybe with my son when he's old enough. 3 stars for the film plus an extra one for the quality of the disk.
Gory but good!
When you think of CGI animated movies these days, you can't help but think of Pixar and the dominance they have had with movies such as the 'Toy Story' series, 'Finding Nemo' and many others. There is no doubt that for sheer consistancy, Pixar deserve all the plaudits. But of course this doesn't mean that other animated movies aren't worth a look. Every so often, something comes along and takes us all by surprise. I remember seeing 'Shrek' for the first time and thinking it was far more charming and entertaining than it had any right to be. The same can be said for 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.'
For a start, don't let the name put you off. I do believe it's more likely to confuse people than entice them into seeing the movie, but I guarantee it's a hidden gem. Adapted from a book by Ron and Judi Barrett, 'Cloudy' is a visual treat that serves up unexpected laughs and tears all in one crazy story. I won't give away all of the voice actors, but it's practically a game of 'spot the voice' from start to finish, including some very surprising yet instantly recogniseable cameos.
Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), a likeable and enthusiastic inventor, lives in Swallow Falls and wants nothing more than to fix the food problems of the town. As you can imagine from the title of the movie, his scientific experiments end up making the weather and food combine to form very interesting results. Flint, along with weather intern Samantha Sparks (Anna Faris), explore the possibilities of his actions. At first it seems like a fun idea, but soon the real implications unravel.
This is a movie for kids and adults alike. As crazy as it is heartwarming, there's jokes that appeal on every level. Flint is a character you want to follow and see what he does next, and his relationship and banter with Samantha makes for some laugh out loud moments. And while it may not quite hit the heights of any Pixar movie, Sony have done a fantastic job of hitting the spot with this quirky script. It has just the right mix of creative animation and witty writing to make it a success.
I don't want to give away too much as I really feel I enjoyed it because I had no real idea of what it was going to be about. 'Cloudy' is a tasty treat that any animation fan will crack a smile at. I hope to get the chance to see it in 3D one day, but the movie works just fine in 2D. Definitely one of the sleeper hits of 2010 for DVD.
A surprising hit.
"A show about a serial killer that you will sympathise with" is about as succint a summary you could give to 'Dexter'. It doesn't sound very believable, but it's genuinely the truth. Of course, by Season 3 you should really be familiar with the basis for this popular show, and hooked already. Part dark comedy, mixed with mystery and crime drama, 'Dexter' doesn't pull any punches.
After one of the most gripping season finales, in which Doakes (Erik King) came so close to exposing Dexter (Michael C. Hall) but ended up losing his life, you realise just how high the stakes are for our favourite serial killer. Not only did he nearly lose his career, but his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) and makeshift family too.
Season 3 shows how Dexter copes with coming so close to having nothing. His inner turmoil caused by the daily fight to balance his urges with normal life makes for a fascinating show, forcing the viewers to look at murder in a very different way. Dexter has to hide his actions from all at the Miami Police Department, including his adoptive sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) who is a detective there, and always a few steps away from uncovering her brother's terrible secret. And Season 3 brings a twist on the 'too close to home' working relationship - Oscar Prado (the ever-watchable Jimmy Smits) who is an assistant district attorney with his own unusual way of cleaning up messes. This somewhat comfortable yet unsettling 'friendship' unravels throughout the season with catastrophic consequences for those involved.
Dexter's dead father Harry (James Remar) still appears from time to time, ever the doubting voice on Dexter's shoulder, and the only person he can truly rely on - or so he thinks. It's never healthy to act on the voice of someone who isn't really there, but who else can a serial killer talk to? Dexter forces himself to develop his relationship with Rita, yet we all know that can only go so far. He is a man alone, no matter how many people he surrounds himself with.
'Dexter' has a stellar supporting cast, from guest stars to recurring characters, such as Desmond Harrington as the new detective Joey Quinn, Lauren Velez as Lt LaGuerta, David Zayas as Sgt Batista, and the cringeworthy Masuka played by C.S. Lee. Without these characters to flesh out the world of 'Dexter' we may not be able to relate quite as much. It's not something many of us are familiar with, so to have it grounded in reality helps us to feel what the writers want us to feel - sympathy and empathy at the same time as being really quite disgusted. It takes a lot of talent to create a serial killer who the audience aren't scared of, but rather want to be happy.
For its unique premise and spot-on casting, 'Dexter' has to be one of the must-watch shows right now. Year on year, it builds on the foundations and creates even more twists and turns, and Season 4 is even better so get watching this and move on! You wouldn't want to upset him would you ..
A fascinating twist on an age-old tale.
What a beautiful film!! An enthralling story that somehow manges to draw you in to the on screen love story and yet still contain some lovely scenes of gore!! haha. The acting is spot on and the setting is absolutely perfect. If this film had been made in England or the like it would not have the same impact; foreign films seem to hit the nail right on the head with these style of movies.
The Blu Ray quality is mind blowing with perfect sound and a stunning picture quality - the scenes set against the white snow backdrop and rich red blood are simply beautiful to behold!
This is a film i will be watching over and over again for years to come. A truly touching film full of emotion that most people can relate to in one way or another. BUY BUY BUY!!!
A wonderful coming of age / love story where one of the characters happens to be a vampire!!
This dvd of Scooter's concert (including extras and much more) is an absolute must buy, for any Scooter fan or dance music fan. The show is just packed with so much energy it is simply brilliant. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone of all ages!
Outstanding from Scooter as usual!
A lot of hype surrounded the release of Kick Ass, not-least because of the controversy surrounding the butterfly-knife-wielding teen Hit Girl.
But now the hype and uproar has died down the film still stands up on its own merits as a genuinely funny, dark, and at times slapstick comedy.
Aaron Johnson (Dave) couldn't be a better fit for the invisible high-schooler turned in-over-his-head crimefighter.
But although he plays the eponymous hero, Aaron Johnson is upstaged by 13-year-old Chloƫ Grace Moretz (Hit Girl), who steals the screen at every opportunity with her brutal executions and foul-mouthed quips.
Visually, Kick Ass is strange because its palette is vibrant and diverse, in a time when superhero capers are striving for the 'gritty' look.
Couple that with the brutal violence and you have a strange juxtaposition which will have laughing with one breath and wincing with the next.
The soundtrack veers from punk to techno to an original superhero theme accented with pop-punk undertones, which all work well given the teen-centred story.
Great supporting performances by Nicholas Cage as Big Daddy (channelling Adam West's Batman) and Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist only strengthen the piece.
In all, unless you are familiar with the Kick Ass comics, the film is surprising in the best way. Its comic-yet-gory violence punctuates scenes containing sharp and memorable dialogue.
It may not live up to its pre-release hype, but it's certainly a welcome change in the superhero genre and a decent comedy in its own right.
ADAPTED from Mark Millar's graphic novel comics' series of the same name, Kick Ass is a Superbad meets the Watchmen, resulting in a darkly funny and violent super-teen-hero movie.
The story follows Dave, a high school nobody and comic shop frequenter who is so desperate to be noticed he decides to become a real-life superhero.
He quickly learns the answer to his question 'why doesn't anyone try to be a superhero in real life' and is hospitalised after being beaten and run down by a car.
In a fortunate twist of fate, Dave ends up with metal plates attached to most of his limbs and nerve damage which stops him from feeling pain.
Kick Ass!
His next attempt at fighting the good fight is captured on a phone camera and uploaded to YouTube, making him a media sensation.
Things turn more sinister though when he as a chance run in with the psychotic 13-year-old superhero Hit Girl and her masked vigilante father Big Daddy, as Dave tries to warn-off the over-zealous ex boyfriend of his high school crush.
Hit Girl takes out a roomful of men, but not before one of them snaps a picture of Kick Ass before he dies.
The gang's boss, crimelord Frank D'Amico, discovers the picture and sets about tracking down Kick Ass.
Kick Ass has a price on his head and only Hit Girl and Big Daddy to turn to.
Meanwhile, D'Amico's son hits upon a plan to locate Kick Ass, by becoming Red Mist, a potential Kick Ass sidekick.
Mayhem, murder and pitch-black comedy ensues.
It's no secret that director Chris Columbus (notwithstanding his screenplay for 'Gremlins', of course) is the living, breathing embodiment of a Hollywood hack. But his films have made over a billon dollars at the box office, so that gives him a little leg room to snap up some of the more promising projects on the books. And so we have 'Percy Jackson & The Lightening Thief'; an innovative, modern take on Greek mythology based on the books by Rick Riordan. Mild mannered but ill at ease teen Percy (i.e. Perseus--see what they did there?) is, apparently, a demi-god; son of Poseidon himself. No wonder he, much like Sebastian the crab from 'The Little Mermaid', prefers life under the sea and is misdiagnosed as dyslexic when the only language that makes any sense to him is, quite literally, ancient Greek to the rest of us. The film sees Percy, wrongly accused of stealing Zeus's lighting bolt, master his powers in a bid to rescue his mother from Hades and clear his name with the gods or risk provoking all out war.
A breezy companion piece to its authentic, narrative counterpart 'Clash Of The Titans', 'Percy Jackson...' makes for a mildly amusing, if somewhat unsubstantial, film. Its well made with good production values, the story's quite interesting though they handle the actual metaphysical concept of theomachy, in a somewhat absurd and often unconvincing manner.
A young cast of unknowns are accompanied by some familiar faces including Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd and Steve Coogan as Zeus, Poseidon and Hades respectively, Pierce Brosnan as Chiron The Centaur, Catherine Keener as Percy's put upon mum, Rosario Dawson as Persephone and consummate scene stealer Uma Thurman, who walks away with the movie as Versace's Medusa. Newcomer Logan Lerman doesn't let the side down as Percy, Pierce Brosnan is clearly having a ball as Chiron whilst Uma Thurman looks as if she were born to play the glamorous gorgon Medusa. Alas, the film loses a lot of momentum once the snake haired seductress meets her fate, though at least those familiar with the story can expect to be reacquainted with the character in some way, shape or form.
Better than I thought it would be, reasonably entertaining fare, worth seeing for Uma Thurman.
Our 4 year old daughter loved this film from the first time she saw it. After the third viewing it was time to wait for the DVD. Excellent family film with a traditional happy ending.
Kyra Sedgwick struck dramatic gold with her interpretation of Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson. Her character's gift is knowing what questions to ask and when, to catch out LA's criminals. The accolades have gone to Sedgwick for a wonderfully real portrayal but the beauty of the show is perfected by the ensemble cast. An extremely well-chosen supporting cast surrounding Brenda Lee, in both her professional and, in later series, her personal life give subtle comedy and familiarity to the show. The added touches of Brenda's terrible eye-sight, map-reading skills and secretive sweet tooth, make series one a very enjoyable foundation from which to enjoy the subsequent series.
A Southern Belle of a Deputy Chief Inspector takes a job leading an essentially all-male, very male squad in Los Angeles, with only her skill at interrogation, certainly not her sense of direction, to win them over.
another beautiful creation by tim burton! From the minute alice appears on screen to the rolling of credits at the end I stared at the screen in wonder!! The new adventures of alice in wonderland is the best movie I have seen in 2010! Tim burtons fabulous imagination yet again creates a wonderland far removed from anything we have ever seen before - each character has been so thoughfully moulded and perfectly acted, each costume so fitting for the personality of the wearer and not a single action out of character! Jonny depp of course plays the role of the mad hatter to absolute perfection - evoking many emotions in the watcher and creating a new depth to the already loved book character! what a fabulous film! especially in 3d! - everyone must buy it on DVD!!!
